Mashable - The Social Media Guide: YouTube Users Get Paid. Tomorrow.

Those this may seem counterintuitive--I'm not sure these small payments are really going to promote greater content quality or quantity and may end up adding a disruptive influence to YouTube.

I'm not sure that YouTube's priority is quality. Of course payments will lower the quality of content.

I don't think YouTube's content is poor, I spend a lot of time on there, and there are people with really interesting opinions (Blunty3000 for example).

I do think, however, that this is a getaround for YouTube. Now they can say "We pay our content producers" when actually, they're only going to pay those that get the most views, not everyone.

Done properly, this could have been amazing. Instead, it's just a cop out.

YouTube definitely does have some excellent user-created content out there. I would love to see them revenue sharing with all users, except therein lies the problem. In the age of "instant fame", how can one predict who the next "star-wars kid" or "numa numa guy" will be? These kind of users certainly deserve credit for their works, but if YouTube is only offering revenue sharing to a select few, how will the "little guys" get their cut?

I suppose if YouTube WAS to open up the treasure chest to all users, they would end up paying some people to share copyrighted content etc (user-recorded TV episodes are quite popular on YouTube, even after the "reduced length restrictions"), and there begins a whole new realm of legal complications. YouTube would certainly be in strife if they were to go down that path. It's sad really.

Couldn't they create a title filter? If you can't find the copyrighted material, there is little point uploading it. Thus getting around the problem of paying people for uploading copyrighted content.

I've never watched lonelygirl15 and never plan on.

So just in case advertisers are wondering, probably barbie dolls and glitter nail polish are the best bets for her kind of videos.

"LisaNova, whose good looks almost make up for a lack of talent."

I suggest you need to get out more.

You have no taste in women.

LisaNova is talentless, go ask the producers of Mad TV. They thought they had a supernova, when in fact she turned out to be an internet star--go figure. I know many of talented out-of-work filmmakers who could use some many to create and yet they wanna pay Rennetto? Pleaze.

They only signed her on for 4 episodes from the get-go.
    It wasn't a "trial period."
She should get credit for opening a door for "guest players" there, since other youtube performers could get the same gig later.
The author seems to have an axe to grind...

    Note to Mike -

If your "talented out-of-work filmmaker" friends could use some money, perhaps they might consider applying their talent to making vids and posting them on YouTube. It might make their amazing talent visible to people who might want to fund a project.
Then they could be working, instead of sitting around making you frustrated.

"The author seems to have an axe to grind"

    Huh?
