Mashable - The Social Media Guide: YouTube Launches Its Redesign

  • Matthew Lowery · 3 months ago
It's lost all appearance appeal to me. There's absolutely no design it, just compare it to vimeo.com or revver.com they actually have nice designs, this is just has nothing.

Vimeo definitely wins here, their design is beautiful, light and provides great usability. I agree, YouTube designers have a lot more to work on....
  • Max · 3 months ago
yes, vimeo is beautiful, but also grown in functions & buttons over the years.
i think, clearing and reducing was a big step for youtube. vimeo has not done this so far.

They say it's clean. But it's not clean! It's cluttered, busy and unappealing.

Here, I demonstrate. Old > New.

Its not a big deal, but it looks much better than the other one.

    I like the new look!

I didn't realize this was not visible to all users at first. It's been like this for way more than a month for me. I always liked it.

I honestly didn't realize it was new; I thought it was just because I was using my Safari browser...

does anyone go to the youtube homepage? honestly, I thought everyone just googled what they were looking for and went from there.
  • Pliggs · 3 months ago
They really didnt change much, still not a fan of the homepage. Every other page seems to be the same. I hope they didnt make too much ado about this as it really is no big deal.

They should have Brian Cray design it.

its not really "new" its chanced slowly over time . i like the new channel designs the best though

Really? wow...and there's the problem with the blog format...its so linear, analog. It's something newspapers get...some things belong on page one, and some things belong in the Sunday E section supplemental.

The new layout is horrible IMO. The old one was WAYYY better. This one has just too much white--it hurts my eyes. D:

All in all the interface change is nice and clean and a good use of screen space, though removing quick access to the quicklist is an odd move. I'd prefer they put the link as a new option in the drop downlist that expands beneath your username.

apparently i was one of the few who could see the redesign, my youtube homepage has been like this for months! i was excited to hear about this, til i realized this. I guess that shows I'm not a huge fan of the layout.

It is a much less 'busy' design. I am glad they got rid of the large ad that was occupying the top of the page. I am glad to have my subscriptions higher on the page since I almost always go to subscriptions, and this makes it a bit easier. Search looks better as well.
  • Aadil Pitafi · 3 months ago
It doesn't really matter to me. The re-design was unnecessary. You can always watch the videos in full-screen mode.
  • Lori Anne Brown · 3 months ago
Truthfully, I don't visit the youtube site enough to have even noticed a redesign if I hadn't seen your post on it. It seems easy to navigate, so its fine by me.
  • Cláudio Duarte · 3 months ago
I find it to be very clean, but at the same time, it feels like the page is empty
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 3 months ago
I noticed it yesterday and really like it! I think it links YouTube with Google nicely, while still giving YouTube its own identity. I also like that they've dropped IE6. (:

This module approach is very slick, coincidentally what I'm going for for redesigning my own site. It's now much easier to scan vs. the clutter we had before. I'm a fan.

My thoughts? The redesign is atrocious!!! A behemoth banner ad opens the minute you arrive at the site, and there is no longer a neat preview rotating of all the videos that are being watched now - I loved that feature!

I am all in favour of making websites better, because frankly 90% of what's on the web today needs a revamp. But you MUST keep your end-user as the primary focus, and YouTube failed to do this. *BIG FRUSTRATED SIGH*
Please bring back the old YouTube Home Page!!!

Never thought too much about it. I’ve had this look for a month or so.

Is it true that they've basically disabled Groups? I can't find anywhere to start a Group. The help forums on YouTube seem to indicate that they left out a bunch of Group functionality for Group owners and members but from what I can tell, you can't start a new one at all!

The new design is pretty neat but not that much better.

I suppose it's bad that I didn't notice the change, eh? But to be honest, I never really used the 'Community' button - seems like the buttons they give me are the ones I'm more likely to use. I think I have been using YouTube more often lately, and perhaps this is a subconscious approval of the new (or, to me, only?) design.
