That all of us online have access to this amazing communication channel for free is a gift of this age. It's impact on humanity will be remembered and debated far into the future.

The fact that it has become the 2nd largest search engine on the planet is testimony to how many times each day a youtube video affects someone's thinking and hopefully their knowledge. Dea

How on earth can they sustain this? I know storage & bandwidth are getting cheaper AND I know Google has a big bank account but the mind truly boggles at the scale of youtube.

Thanks for the great YouTube update!! Whew, almost half a bil in losses?! That's humongous.

They should not be worried about the incoming traffic on their network. That will be much much lower than the outgoing traffic and hence not add to their traffic bill.

Wow. Those are some big numbers. It is getting very crowded out there. At this rate, they are never going to make money from this site. They have to get very creative--I'm sure they have some stuff up their sleeves. The youtube brand is pretty darn valuable though--no other company comes close to its marketshare and consumer recognition.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years.

Those numbers are huge, indeed. But do you think that brand recognition is going to be the thing that drives some users away from the site? The fact that I'm NOT on YouTube and my player doesn't look like the YouTube player (and doesn't have the logo) makes it all that much cooler that I'm on Vimeo (for example).

But I have to say, that the YouTube community (which grows from its numbers) is super-important and super-huge. I do hope they can monetize it. I'm sure they have tricks. We're just in the beginning here. Let's see where this goes in two years.

    Jennifer-

That is an impressive number, if anyone can move them to a profitable site and has the cash to do it, Google is it. Thanks for continuing to keep us current on the rapid changes at YouTube. Last week I posted a case study (incorporated in a product review) of conversion numbers for YouTube traffic to our site. Very impressive, and justifies the marketing investment in YouTube. Keep up the great work!

    wow..thats pretty impressive.
and with the new feature there will be even more data noise....
.. but im really sure that one day google will turn all this into big big money and stable business model...

Love the simplicity of "one click" video response! A solution to address the rising costs needs to happen quick as this feature has huge potential.

20 hours of video every minute - That means, with roughly 12MB for a 5 minute video, the low quality versions of new videos alone fill a Terabyte HDD every 5 hours.

I Wonder how much disk space Youtube uses? 50000TB? lol.
