That is odd as that has been available for a long time. I use to use it, but it annoys people on Facebook and then they end up turning you off. Peace Debbie Yates
  • Sasha H. Muradali · 3 months ago
It's the opposite way around -- Facebook pages (not profiles pages) are now linked to Twitter.

So if you go to your page -- for example, mine is http://facebook.com/thelittlepinkbook and I post a picture, link, note or event -- it gets tweeted to Twitter (@SashaHalima).

Not the other way around. I think what you are talking about is the Twitter app for the Facebook, where everything you tweet ends up in your status message.

  • David · 3 months ago
Maybe Facebook are trying to encourage users to do both Twitter and Facebook, as they are worried about Twitter beating them in the long run if they try to compete directly and win the market alone?
  • Alex Luft · 3 months ago
I think that's a common mistake when comparing Twitter and Facebook. For one to win, the other does not have to lose. So for Facebook to win, Twitter doesn't have to lose... and vice-versa.

The two can co-exist in perfect harmony and serve different markets and people - just like GM and Toyota.

We will be discussing this in further detail on today's TechNest Report podcast at 5:30p EST at http://bit.ly/tnrlive

(For some reason, my previous post was deleted)

Cool! Nice to see work being done for the Facebook Stream. Although richer tough, the FB Stream is still less readable than twitter's. I hope to see some imporvement on that too.
  • Shane Burgess · 3 months ago
Darn, I just started my project streemly.com that works the same way. hopefully my time wasnt wasted.
  • Pranay Manocha · 3 months ago
I don't understand why you are so surprised. This is natural progression for Facebook. We post links, update our status, subscribe to group etc on Facebook. Right now Facebook is a content assimilator - if I post a link on Digg I can see that it is also posted on my Facebook profile - but that is against common sense. When I post a link I want my friends to comment - so I should be able to post a link on Facebook and have it dugg later!

By the same logic, I should update my status on Facebook and have my status tweeted auttomatically rather than the reverse happening as is the case now.

I think this is just the beginning og a deluge of Facebook apps made by Facebook to disseminate (as against assimilate) the huge knowledge base it has built up.

This had to happen. its natural progression.

    Cheers,
    Pranay
  • Adam Ostrow · 3 months ago
it's surprising because to-date, FB has been (for better or worse) doing lots of things to emulate Twitter, either because it's worried that it's a competitive threat or simply think it has a lot of good ideas. Now, they're essentially saying "go ahead and use Twitter" to their Pages users, although, as I wrote, it might be a bigger win for FB than it is for Twitter, whereas adding this functionality to Profiles, with 250M+ users, could be a huge boon to Twitter and is not likely something we'll see imo.
  • Pranay Manocha · 3 months ago
@Adam - "adding this functionality to Profiles, with 250M+ users, could be a huge boon to Twitter and is not likely something we'll see imo"

But if Facebook does add this functionality to Profiles, wouldn't it mean that people would start tweeting from Facebook itself? An endorsement for other platforms yes, but it should pull more users to Facebook rather than away from it. Or perhaps I am missing something here?

Even so, I think it would be a tricky implementation for profiles because Facebook users remain extremely concerned about privacy.
  • JP · 3 months ago
This was exactly my thought. People should consider the business perspective. It makes a lot of sense. Facebook may be thinking "why would our users even go to Twitter anymore if they can do it all from Facebook?" Now granted, I think both platforms serve different purposes; but there is no doubt that Facebook wants to be "The" social network.

I agree -- I was surprised when I saw the tweet for this post. I read it twice to make sure I read right.

I mean word on the street was that that's the reason that Facebook bought FriendFeed. Not for the platform but for the people who built the platform. It was supposed to help Facebook become more Twitter like. It's something that they've always seemed to want to do -- especially, after the Twitter guys refused to sell to them.

The biggest drawback I see right now -- is that Twitter has a habit of breaking...like a lot. The influx of tweets from the world's largest social media outlet might actually break it at some point and cause yet another couple hours of dead zone "fixing."
  • Pranay Manocha · 3 months ago

Yes, lately twitter is breaking a lot and with this move FB can really overload Twitter making people look for an alternative.

Many of us already automatically post our Twitter comments on Facebook. Given that Twitter comments are far more restrictive in format than Facebook comments, what would be the advantage of posting on Facebook than Twitter if one intends one's comment to appear on both?
  • Colleen Robledo · 3 months ago
I don't see any real advantage here, just Facebook's attempt to get Page admins to post from FB instead of from Twitter. And you're right....anything over 140 characters would get cut off in Twitter due to its restrictive nature.
  • Ari Herzog · 3 months ago
Perhaps the advantage is the same as Disqus and Intensedebate comment systems, like the below checkbox "here" that allow one to post a comment and tweet it? Any extraneous text would likely have a link, right? Maybe a link to the page where it can be found?
  • Ricardo Bueno · 3 months ago
I didn't know what to think of this at first. But after some tinkering, I see this as an opportunity for folks to drive traffic/earn subscribers to their Facebook Pages which seems to be what a lot of people in my network have been asking (how do I drive traffic, get subscribers, etc.).

  • Ur_AddictionXx · 3 months ago
This is new?I've been doing this on TweetDeck for months!
  • Karen Clark | @funfelt · 3 months ago
I really can't stand double (or triple!) postings most of the time but for a business page that is making an announcement (vs. a personal profile which is more conversational) I could see it coming in handy.
  • Mike Dammann · 3 months ago
This makes perfect sense as we get our tweets automatically posted onto Facebook. Having it done in reverse is a winner for social media users.
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
I'm a bit concerned about echo issues. people should still be able to push twitter to facebook and facebook to twitter and not have to chose between the tho. I'd also like to see some kind of echo filter with twitter to friendfeed to facebook posts. whole thing needs to be elegant. it will help all the networks. nobody benefits by being the bottom feeder.
  • Mike Dammann · 3 months ago
My question would be this: If I post on my fan page, it will go to my twitter and from there it will go back to my twitter profile?
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
I don't get it Mike. I just tested the service. it didn't doubletweet from hellotxt.
it is a good application. I'm glad it is there.
  • Mike Dammann · 3 months ago
I just tested it and it went from my fan page to twitter and back to my fb profile http://www.facebook.com/firetown?ref=name
  • Mark · 3 months ago
I didn't see this coming. All of the news seemed to point towards increased competition between the two especially with Facebook's recent purchase of Friendfeed. I suppose the angst towards the two companies was more media speculation than reality?
  • Chris (Efficient Guide) · 3 months ago
Not quite right to call what is happening between FB and Twitter a "battle"(?). They are really complementary services in their current configurations and I think this shows that FB knows that. They have seen countless users manually do cross-publishing between the two services and are doing the logical thing: making it easier to do in a way that users will like and will likely help them.
  • MSchechter · 3 months ago

I understand why they are connected FB and Twitter. But now its an all in one because Digg is also connected with Facebook. I think they should keep their own entity. If I wanted all in one account I wouldn't have signed up for all 3 at different times. The are not alike at all. I hope it remains an option because I an not interested.

If you don't qualify for having a page you are out of luck and they've cracked down on those creating pages that don't fit in their strict definition of "allowed". Multiply.com's new xposting features allows all users to crosspost to both twitter and/or facebook and for any category of post they choose (photo album, blog, link, quicknote, whatever) on a post by post basis with the tick of a box for either or both prior to publishing.
  • diseño web · 3 months ago
I think that them will merge in the future... :)
    Facebook will buy Twitter...
  • Pradeep · 3 months ago
It's better not to mix up both Twitter and Facebook, as both have their own unique characteristics. Twitter is only short messaging, while Facebook is a much wider platform.

Twitter is for broadcasting a short message to the audience at large, It's more like a blog. But Facebook has a very restricted audience. Only those you have added as friends would get to see what is put up, unless you have adjusted the settings otherwise.

Facebook this way is only seeking to increase its visibility.
  • Gurt_McSquirt · 3 months ago
Actually it's smart. If you don't want to hassle yourself posting on Twitter then posting on Facebook, why not just post on Facebook and have it automatically post on Twitter?? It could get people to stay on Facebook and stop using Twitter altogether.
  • Gurt_McSquirt · 3 months ago

pretty cool - not sure if i like the current app that shares my twitter feed as a facebook status update - RTs and hashtags only go so far!
  • jc1000000 · 3 months ago
This seems like an obvious move to keep people using Facebook.

Unfortuantely IMHO cloning your twitter updates into facebook and vice versa destroys the value of using either network.
  • Chett12 · 3 months ago
I've been using a twitter app on my facebook business page for some time now. The app shows up as a tab, and keeps a small archive of my 5 recent tweets. I guess a huge disadvantage with that is that fans can't see the updates directly through the news feed, they have to first go to the page and then click on the tab, which of course doesn't generate as much traffic to my tweets as I would like.

I would have clearly preferred the other way around, that is to say updating my Facebook page from a twitter application as it is done for profiles ... From a musician perspective Facebook is not ready and at the moment will not be preferred over myspace at the moment. I am wondering what will come from their Ilike buy ....

I'll give it to Facebook; this is a good addition. Of course, Twitter has a Facebook app that already connected the two services, but Twitter's app only posted to your personal wall, not fanpages you might manage. This fills that void.
  • Wayne · 3 months ago
I am glad to hear this. My facebook page is business related and so is my twitter account. My tweets were showing up on my personal profile and driving my friends crazy. So much so that I delinked twitter from facebook. Now I will be able to separate business and personal.

Seems pretty strategic for Facebook - if you can't beat 'em join 'em right? I guess we will have to see how it all works out. Think all the social media apps/networks will eventually meld into one giant big-brother-matrix style machine that has us all ensnared? sounds like a great sci-fi movie :)
  • Scott · 3 months ago
I think I represent a case study for why this is useful, and terrible at the same time.

My Facebook status updates are primarily just smartass quips, and for the most part they tend to be pretty well received there. I don't tend to tweet very often because it is too much effort to do both just for the sake of making a funny. And posting via twitter in order to have it trickle over to FB where the main audience is just doesn't make sense. So in the end I rarely use Twitter and have been considering abandoning it.

This app however probably returns twitter from the brink of deletion from my account list.

Assuming there are many people in the same boat as me, it is good for both FB and Twitter in the sense that it will significantly increase the number of tweets (which will increase the argument for Twitter's market value) and will provide utility to the FB user.

But the big downside is that the percentage of stupid tweets is about to explode.

The positioning of this article is a bit misleading. If you read deeper you see the application is only for Facebook Pages which are available to selected celeberties and other interest groups that have Facebook approved page usage. I'm not under the impression this for the general public.

I'm presently writing a book on social media monetization from a marketing perspective for Pearson one of the world's largest publishing groups. I've asked to participate in this twitter/Facebook integration for my new goup that I'm updating with links and narrative during the interviewing, researching and writing process http://groups.to/socialmediamonetization. We'll see if I hear anything back. If this is a good application I'd like to be able to recommend it to businesses.
