I'm pretty sure that caching conflicts are why I ditched the mobile theme I installed over a year ago. Of course, since they, I've ditched caching plugins in favor of better hosting and the ability to run a PHP opcode cache, so, I'm back to having a mobile theme on my blog.

This is actually a problem with bloggers across the web. In many cases they post without ever doing even the simplest of research...like a Google search!

Wired.com just ran an article about how parents should all vaccinate their kids against H1N1 because "the research is undeniable" and yet didn't include any information about "the research", the source, the actual statistics, etc.

I'm beginning to think they do it because they think we'll believe anything we see online.

WPTouch is available for self-hosted wordpress blogs. I haven't done any major customization of it yet, but you can see it in action at my site by visiting it on an iPhone. I just relaunched the site, and am working on newer better content, so bear with me.

But the mobile template works!

The problem with having Wordpress mobile edition for everything other than an iPhone is that for the vast majority of the mobile phone market, a bad user experience is being served out. Sites look plain and boring and look like every other mobile site around.

Another option for anyone with a self hosted blog is the Wapple Architect Mobile Plugin for WordPress - it makes your site look awesome on EVERY device, not just the iPhone. The URL for my plugin is: http://wordpress.org/extend...

It also has a load of options so you can really configure your mobile site to look and function how you want - after all, the mobile browsing experience is very much different to a web one.

@Duane Storey that's awesome! Thanks highly; looks like a good method [for everyone else: it tells the .htaccess file to bypass cached file if iphone]. Will try it out!

There are several plugins already available for self hosted blogs including Mobile Press and WP Touch, all you have to do is to install the plugin on your blog and bam you have a mobile friendly website.

Watch out for this plugin when using caching... We used the WP-Touch plugin for a while; but then we added the super-cache plugin... I got comments like "uhh the site looks weeeeeiiird".... what happened was the super-cache had cached the HTML from an iphone visitor and displayed it to everyone else. We disabled the plugin quickly.

Did you even bother to search for WPTouch in the plugins area of your admin area? Of course not, or you would have seen it's a one touch install for your self hosted Wordpress install.

I'm beginning to wonder if any of the staff at Mashable ever do any research before writing a story...

self hosted blog administrators can install wptouch by themselves. not a lot of trouble, and a great plugin.
