Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Woofer: The 1400 Character Anti-Twitter

  • mrpatg · 3 months ago
Neat concept. Attention span too out of shape to function.
  • Randolph Rankin · 3 months ago
If you really want <140 characters, then it's not really a "tweet." It's a blog. That's why I find myself using Tumblr a lot more now-a-days. It's like twitter for people who don't know how to shut up.
  • joffaboy · 3 months ago
I think you mean ">140 characters", neh?
  • BaronToler · 3 months ago
HAHA! That's what happens when someone spends their day processing nothing more than <140 character "half-thoughts". I swear twitter is dumbing down our world. Regardless of all the hype Mashable and Twitcrunch spew. Unless you're writing in Haiku... Twitter makes people truncate thoughts. I applaud the makers of Woofer. Even if it is a joke... the English language should be respected, embraced and utilized.

RT@Shakespeare @Hemingway Twitr TxtSpk?!? I rite MidSumr Nite Dreem. 1 up ur 4 whom bell tolz. http:// somestupidurlshortener.com/IcantTellWhatThisLinkIsBeforeIClickItSoItsProbablyNSWF-P0rnz

Yeah... that sh*t is ***TOTALLY*** intellectual and classical thinking right? I dread the day high-school english lit consists of reading tweets and writing like that. <140 characters is NOT the way to go.

Twitter is GREAT for promoting your product announcements, sales, etc. Its pretty useless for transmitting truly meaningful thoughts and conversation.

P.S. Take a look at thinkexist.com. It is a wonderful quotation resource. Using twitter <140 character standards...roughly half of the world's "great quotes" can not even be disseminated by tweets. If you want to tweet a quote AND attribute the quote to the author...the percentage drops to about 25%. Therefore, the arbitrary limitations of Twitter, which are so beloved by the bleeding-edge herd, effectively reduce the illuminated wisdom of the world by up to 75%. Backwards is NOT the way we should be going with technology. Onwards. Upwards. Outwards.... (plug for http://extropy.org)

P.P.S. (in reply to Sikku's remark below "Dats too much.... Above all people will feel bored while reading all the 1400 characters all the time...")

Hmmm. I assume that's why noooooooobody has ever bothered to read any of these:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/top100.shtml

"The effort required to creating a lasting work of art, which will influence individuals and society for years to come, will always outweigh the short-term benefits of pandering to the fickle zeitgeist. Take the long view. It ALWAYS wins in the end game. " - me

Hmmm. I guess even that is too "boring", eh? 113 characters too long to post as a Tweet.
  • Melanie Gebhardt · 3 months ago
this post was too long for me to read.

    haha
  • Ercüment Özen · 3 months ago
Minimum 1400? Oh no! Maximum 140 better...
  • Ara · 3 months ago
Not impressed me yet! LOL - That's for spamers i guessed :)
  • Emperor_Bob · 3 months ago
Twitter, Facebook and several blogs are more than enough for me. I don't see the need personally.
  • SL · 3 months ago
Twitwall (www.twitwall.com) is similar but more useful.
  • Erika Fletcher · 3 months ago
    As it Twitlonger (http://www.twitlonger.com/)

On checking it out, TwitWall is just like Tumblr.
  • Rita · 3 months ago
    Except Tumblr is way better.
  • Erika Fletcher · 3 months ago
Oh, absolutely. I'm a Tumblr addict, lol.

    ..or Trustler (trustler.com)
  • gwoodard · 3 months ago
I'm afraid the appeal of brevity does not also work in the opposite. Very few people exist that I want to hear from in more than 140 bytes.
  • Viralwordpress · 3 months ago
Oh My! But isn't this a bit about BARKING up the wrong tree?
I mean Twitter has 50 million + users.
    Woofer has how many?

I don't see the creative concept.

Hmm.. better for those who have stories to share .. ppl dnt have much time to read the whole story even in 140 characters I miss some of the tweets .. who wants to know the whole story . what are you reading , what are you eating , where are you .. ho wants to know .. ppl who wants and bothers are already in our phone books .. it is like a diary .. where you can update at night .. tweeting abt ur whole day .. and the worst thing is that it should be 1400 characters MINIMUM ...it wont be updated if its 1399 characters .. I think i have to use more dots ....:)

    Cheers,
    Daina

Am I wrong in thinking that Woofer is more a spoof than a serious attempt to break out a new social media?
  • Mike Dammann · 3 months ago
don't we have facebook for that?
  • WisTex · 3 months ago
Neat parody site. :) Wish I had thought of it. :D
  • ricsam · 3 months ago
Excellent for those who: a) are verbose (140 characters is not enough!), b) want to convey messages with every minute detail (ahhh perfection!), and c) can't shut up!!
  • Mike Dammann · 3 months ago
What am I not getting? You don't log in and just use your Twitter user name? So basically this is opening doors for imposters and mayhem.
  • PetrBuben · 3 months ago
that requirement of MUST be over 1400 chars will kill this good intention application.. can you just leave it open? .."up to 1400 and over" ? ANY amount?

if not, this will not work...

Dats too much.... Above all people will feel bored while reading all the 1400 characters all the time...
May be once in a while ok...
Anyway let me woof for some time after all these tweets... :P

Is Woofer the next Twitter? 1400 characters. Here is a play by play of my harrowing experience over there in a woof - http://ow.ly/llPZ

    Long live Twitter.
  • tombiro · 3 months ago
Wow, guess I should have executed verbosr after all, earlier this year.
  • Giridhar · 3 months ago
it doesn't ask for any password. Just fill in the user name and the 1400 tweet will be posted along with the selected username's avatar... check it out.. u can impersonate any one in woofer...
  • Ryan Lalonde · 3 months ago
This is fun to play around with. I don't believe it will be popular for too long tho.
  • Katelyn · 3 months ago
I like woofer a lot more than Shuffletime, to be perfectly honest. Shuffletime seems to be this company's answer to Stumble Upon, which I find humorous because it's unlikely that anyone will find the Shuffletime website without Stumble Upon. At least Woofer is an improvement to Twitter...

    A Bit Of Fun
  • Money-Era · 3 months ago
I like the approach, smart market move leveraging on Twitter buzz. I actually think Woofer potentially can be monetized in more ways than Twitter http://www.money-era.com/category/monetizing-tw...

Writing in 140 characters is difficult, and elaborating in 1400 chars is a pain.
  • Curt Milnes · 3 months ago
That's interesting, but it's too much effort to type up 1400 characters. Bleh >_<
  • fla030 · 3 months ago
I use posterous.com if I want to post more than 140 characters, post picstures, videos or links. Posterous rocks!
  • Σχολή Χορού · 3 months ago
Nothing compares to the original, but people in woofer really tried to copy the whole twitter project. Even the look and feel is 90% twitter.

I feel a lawsuit coming on!
  • Chris Murray · 3 months ago
I don't have time to read blogs(yes, yes I read this one), and sure as hell don't have time to write one! 140 characters is just enough for me to vent my anger when using Microsoft and Adobe products all day. I have nothing else to say. How many characters was that? ;0)
  • Vickie Smith-Siculiano, PMP · 3 months ago
Woofers and tweeters. Pretty funny - what about the midrange for those in between and and subwoofers for even more characters. Kitchy and cute - I like!

    This sucks ...

Quite possibly one of the funniest posts on the web! Nice work!!

Moby Dick anyone? Hey being long-winded can turn you into a classic!
  • Natalie · 3 months ago
I heart your "PDF" instead of PHD use.

I hate that they are just copying twitter. Be a little creative peeps
  • niclos · 3 months ago
Why 1400 Min? It should be 1 min 1400 max. Think this is taking Twitter to the opposite extreme. It won't last.
  • Cody Gibbs · 3 months ago
Oh my gosh people, you guys take this way too seriously. Read the article, have a laugh. Nobody is impressed at your ability to take apart a joke concept and tell us why it won't work. It's called a PARODY.
  • Blogs Marketing · 3 months ago
It's very blah! - don't love it and it requires to type a minimum of 1400 characters - It's a great marketing tactic though - they're driving a hell of a lot of traffic to shuffletime..good times.
  • toddtheodore · 3 months ago
A great idea. I kind of hope this takes off so our society can be good at something besides conciseness and efficiency for once

This is pretty entertaining. I love a good quality spoof, Woofer is the perfect name for the larger and much more vocal micro blog. Twitter has little tiny tweets, and well, Woofs have clearly a larger connotation. I like that they have 'characters' number.
  • CoachDebra · 3 months ago
If twitter and woofer had a baby, would it be a birddog?
  • tvnewswatch · 3 months ago
Kind of useful here in China where Blogger, Twitter Facebook etc are all blocked unless working through a proxy. Though the twitter gadget in Google ig still works blogging is fraught with problems hence being able to put more copy into the blogosphere without restriction is a plus. The point made about anonymity is thou a valid one, though woofer may not be serious enough to address it. And of course the PRC may soon add Woofer to the growing list of blocked sites.
  • tiggerm · 3 months ago
Woofer? hmmm i can't really see myself signing up for woofer, what am i gonna say for 1400 charactors!!? LOL, i dont think i talk that much in a day!! although some peeps may say otherwise LOL, idk, everyones got their opinion, i like twitter, although if twitter extended out to 160 charcators that would be cool. 1400?!?!?!?! it makes me laugh!!! LOL
