Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Wink Launches Social Network Search for MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn

This is great that meta-social networking is finally arriving. While Wink is a much more fleshed-out implementation, those who are interested in meta-social networking should check out Snag:

    http://www.dappit.com/dapplications/Snag

It offers search across LinkedIn, MySpace, Friendster, Facebook, and Hi5. It also allows you to see your friends from all the networks, see your inboxes, and get status updates on your friends.

Like I said on TechCrunch, so what? I just took 5 minutes and created my own social search using Google co-op:

    http://google.com/coop/cse?cx=01109186129424755...

Compare them. My results are just as good as Wink.

Hashim - I beg to differ. I've been running comparisons and find very little that is "just as good." Just one example, Google returns 335 people for the phrase "manchester united" wink's Social Network Search engine returns 23,569. Plus, your co-op has hardly any Bebo results.

Matthew, are you implying that quantity matters? I would think that relevance is the ultimate measure, since few people get past page 1 of any search engine results page.

What about the legal aspects involved in all of this. Since Myspace and the other networks do not currently provide an API, I am assuming that Wink is simply spidering these guys. If so, how long until they get blocked or totally shut down?
  • Matthew Stotts · 3 years ago
Jordan - It depends if you're searching for "a" friend or new friends. When I'm searching for a specific friend there is only one result I care about, true. However, when the effort is to find new friends with the same interest - quantity is key. I want to start with the largest field and narrow from there. From the Manchester United example on wink, you could refine by gender to 6,600 then by location to the 11 female fans in San Francisco. Now you can chat up someone about the premiership match against Blackburn today. That's social search.

Anyone tried The Iternet Address Book here you can search on MySpace, Friendster, LinkedIn, Flickr, ICQ, Hi5, Last.fm, ZoomInfo, Buzznet, Xanga, Bolt and more. The results are quite o.k. though you can't do specific searches on male, female or single persons.
If they are not collecting information from these networks on their own servers I think it's legal.
