Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Windows Phone Ad: What Do You Think?

  • joebrooks · 1 month ago
I can't wait for FunnyOrDie to spoof this one! ;d

One of the great Windows features you can't get on a Mac - probably the firmware and software, not the chip. But there is an app for that!
  • Artful Dodger · 1 month ago
LOLZ! This really made me laugh my head of hahaha!
  • Douglas Karr · 1 month ago
They should have had each of them slowing down as they were introduced... you know... as memory was being used up. Then he could have pulled out a 'task gun' and killed Outlook so the others could move again.
  • geo · 1 month ago
The final scene should be all the icons being run over by a Microsoft Danger Van!
  • adamhirsch · 1 month ago
Haha! I kind of like the video! It's cute and slightly informative ;)
  • Jason C · 1 month ago
Took the words right out of my mouth. But why not have the car crash into a BLUE Danger Van with white lettering that looks like BSOD? How about being carjacked by hackers? Have flyers for popups fall on the windsheild?
  • jenna · 1 month ago
I think this is an amazing ad.
gets to the point and the icons look cute :)
  • J U Hasan · 1 month ago
I liked the ad. You are right, now people are more concern about apps than the real phone. At last Microsoft has successfully spread the sales speech.
  • Ryan Lalonde · 1 month ago
    I thought it was amusing.
  • Matt Hardwick · 1 month ago
I like the second half better, I think in the UK it's slightly different, less of the awkward beginning.
  • Veebeep · 1 month ago
I'm with you, Pete. I think it sends the perfect message, short and sweet.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
I sincerely hope the UK advert isn't like that.
I saw a glimpse of the end with the Windows orb, but didn't catch the advert itself.
  • Adam Haider · 1 month ago
The idea of the advert itself is quite interesting, however the way they portrayed the message was a complete disaster. It gives me the creeps just watching it. :S
  • dyegov · 1 month ago
I also think it sends the perfect message. It looks really good.
  • shoobs · 1 month ago
yeah, we're all stalked by Microsoft -- I feel for that guy
  • Benjamin Dobson · 1 month ago
Add me to the "creeped out" bunch.
  • Taranfx · 1 month ago
    LOL @ MS
    As usual Lam3
  • Mercedes Clements · 1 month ago
Liked it. In fact, I had been waiting for a new phone from ATT that had keyboard, touchscreen, and 3G. Within hours of seeing commercial I was online researching Tilt 2.
  • BryanJones · 1 month ago
Based on screen-time, it seems that the star *Microsoft App* is Twitter.
  • Jamie Shaw · 1 month ago
By 'just launched' do you mean on broadcast on TV?
I seriously saw this ad about an hour and a half ago... on the UK Channel 'five' I think it was.

Saying the Windows Phone is coming to Vodafone.
  • Bruce K · 1 month ago
I always thought Windows icons looked too clunky and big. Guess so.

    Sent from my iPhone.
  • DonovanT · 1 month ago
I also disagree with TechFlash. As adverts go, this one is pretty good. Conveys the message in a clever and relevant way. That being said, I don't think they'll win over many iPhone users, but it makes them a contender in the smart phone arena for anyone who's still on the fence about it.
  • DonovanT · 1 month ago
And for the record, I'm an Apple/iPhone guy all the way.
  • dan24 · 1 month ago
It is awfull. I think they made this comercial for kids or more "special" people :)
  • Michael Lajlev · 1 month ago
Thinks its weird that they user twitter as an icon. They should hype their own products or that its an open platform
  • Bruce K · 1 month ago
It's ok, they are just trying to compete with the more popular smartphones. I wonder if the applications gave their permission to be used in this ad? Will it help them or hurt?
  • Aayush Shastri · 1 month ago
I like the ad...it's creative, small & informative....

plus, it's so much better than the junk they've made with their host the windows 7 party ad campaign....
  • colette13 · 1 month ago
I think its good and gets the message across but the music could have played a more important role to ease some of the awkwardness / confusion in the beginning. I couldn't get anything from it and therefore doesn't have the same impact. I don't assoc. Twitter and Facebook with Microsoft though. Good but could have been better.
  • Bob Brewer · 1 month ago
The ad works for me. Gets the point across that you can do anything on your WinMo phone that you can do on your laptop. Unfortunately for MS, the ad is lost on me as I can do MORE on my t-Mo G1s (I carry two) than I can on on my 2 Fujitsu tablets. The Google Cloud rocks in combination with the utility and portability of the G1 Android. I never thought that one day I'd make Dick Tracy jealous! Tomorrow's Google Android cloud will be another leap away from the lap and desk (tops).
  • Joshua Chase · 1 month ago
Honestly, I think they are completely missing the mark. The problem is, their campaigns don't make me feel like I can identify with the character. So I say FAIL.
  • Conrad Theart · 1 month ago
I get it, but the guy looks like he seriously does NOT want all the apps with him.
  • Mark · 1 month ago
    Definitely a miss
  • Doug Smith · 1 month ago
Cute ad. No way I'm buying a Windows phone.
  • yorker69 · 1 month ago
I thought the ad was much better than the product, but still not great.
  • nickck · 1 month ago
    looks good i think
  • Kiran · 1 month ago
    bizarre ad
  • Zahid Lilani · 1 month ago
Nice AD, they need to look for a better model in their next ad if they want to sell any phones.
  • Belle · 1 month ago
What the? It's a bit creepy. Strange people dressed as icons sneaking around your appartment in 'leave nothing to the imagination' white tights...
And the way he holds up the phone is so pompous...
    It hasn't sold me!
  • Carlo · 1 month ago
Though I'm not a Windows fan and far from it, it's definitely cute.
  • marshmallowpie · 1 month ago
I like it. It's cute. :D I think those icons would be an interesting Halloween costume idea as well.
  • Miguel · 1 month ago
    Smells like "Danger" to me.
  • chukwumaonyeije · 1 month ago
Let's think this thru. Apps in the add are large, bulky and don't seem mobile. Those are reasons NOT to get a Windows phone.
  • z · 1 month ago
This has got to be a joke, right!
  • Jeff Jackson · 1 month ago
I thought it was good not great. I was ready for everyone to trash it since it was microsoft.
  • Kissmyblackads · 1 month ago
This would have been a great commercial... 4 years ago!
  • carnellm · 1 month ago
I think the ad is actually pretty cute and effective. Take all your favorite apps with you. Point is made very well. (I will still carry my iPhone though!)
  • Strategious · 1 month ago
The sad part is, the average cell phone user, still doesn't understand the meaning of apps, versions, etc. They expect it to be included with the device.
  • Gifts · 1 month ago
I have to say I have ben very happy with MS offerings lately they have come out with truly great programs in the last few weeks and months, but we are still talking about MS and chances are high that within the next year or so they will disappoint and bring back the old feelings of hate. Things just seem odd lately, MS making great programs...........

I watched this yesterday evening, it reminded me of the incident we had whilst out the previous night with my friend travelling in the boot of the car. Good times! Twitter teaches us how to travel safely!!!
  • wuttf · 1 month ago
LOL WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP.

    Windows phone = fail
  • Artful Dodger · 1 month ago
LOL! It's lame! Bahaha the last bit was good though when the Twitter icon was jumping into his boot lolz!
  • Jim Littlefield · 1 month ago
Microsoft missed the smartphone boat and thinks everybody still wants a car.

The ad demonstrates what sets a Window Phone apart from other smart phones. However integration with Microsoft's desktop app's isn't something I identify with or value anymore.
  • Name · 1 month ago
This does no harm but does not differentiate. It does not set up what is different or unique about their product compared to the smart phone category. Maybe they simply want to announce they have arrived... and stay tuned for what's next.

    Time will tell.
  • Mahésh Shrestha · 1 month ago
Had it not been in Mashable article, I wouldn't know what advert is this. thanks to Mashable, atleast I knew its Microsoft mobile advert. cheers guys
  • brianhoney · 1 month ago
Ad itself is not bad.. but the little blue character on the back of the green one... had sort of a "Qwato-ish" look about it. And it does nothing to confront the appearance of Outlook as bulky and rather slow.
  • Zijia · 1 month ago
I think it will hit the market.Windows phone will hit for sure.
  • jordon · 1 month ago
I actually think this is the best Windows (or Microsoft) commercial to come out in recent memory. I think it hits the more artsy folks and does an excellent job at getting the brand messaging across. Definitely a winner in my eyes.
  • Josh Arnold · 1 month ago
    miss
  • Jillian Tate · 1 month ago
Wait, is it 2006? Because the concept of taking apps with you on the go was novel then. Microsoft would have cleaned up on phone sales if they'd offered the ability to connect to more applications THEN. Now, it's like, well OF COURSE this phone does that - doesn't every phone? All this seems to do is keep Microsoft from getting left behind, not from being a leader in the phone tech space.
  • MTAMAZING · 1 month ago
I'm confused. Is this supposed to be an actual Windows Phone? Or just a Windows platform-ed phone.

I feel like Microsoft's marketing strategy isn't quite there. Sometimes it's ok. Like Pete mentioned, the Laptop Hunter commercials is a good example.

But this is so vague and ambiguous. And it shows nothing on why it would be better than the iPhone or even the Droid platforms. Social media apps? iPhone and Droids have them. So what else is there?

Unless of course... this is just another one of those things Microsoft does to copy Apple. Can you say Windows Store? (it even looks like an Apple Store--- So Sad.)

As a person who's planning on getting a new phone in a few months, I would say this phone definitely doesn't have the same appeal the Droid or iPhone has. You'd have to really love Windows AND AT&T to get this.

And the take away? Once again, MSFT attempts to stuff far too much sh!t into a vehicle that can't possibly hold it all. If it manages to get all those losers in that little VW, it's going to go slow, drag bottom, and handle like a bathtub. Congrats on the truth in advertising!
