social networks make me get sick, yes they are a great tool to be close to our family and friends but it has turned into an annoying place with all those widgets, spam and many unwanted requests, there all still a couple of good SN but looks like they are taking the same direction

Having more of the same broad based socnets is too confusing. I do agree however with what many others have said in these comments where there is room for social groups build around shared interests...just like the real world you can have a book club or a bowling club.

Now whether these 'groups' are built on an existing socnet like facebook or orkut, stand alone, or a mash up of both is a different question and one which I would be interested in hearing yours and others opinions.

I think when a particular network gains momentum as in I get comfortable using it there is interaction happening to and fro then I could also try something new.
No point if I am already struggling handling the existing accounts :)

Dave, the thing I try to keep in mind is, "What's my strategy or intent for a given network?" And, how does it fit the ecosystem? If I can't answer that, I don't give the network any attention. It usually boils down to: with whom can I connect about a certain interest in the new network? Be there with purpose.

I believe that is much better to be fully engaged and connected in a few networks, than only minmally engaged and connected in a number of them.

Hey Dave-
We met back at blog business summit in 2006 I believe. Anyway, I honestly don't know how people keep up with, yet alone utilize, more than about 4 social networks. I get quite a few invites as well, and pretty much ignore all of them unless it comes from a VERY good friend. I just don't have time to deal with all these random social networks. The only ones I use regularly are facebook and mybloglog, and sometimes I log onto twitter. I haven't logged in to myspace for over 3 months -- though this comment just made me think I should go check to see if anyone not on facebook is trying to get ahold of me. Good topic of conversation.

I agree that there are too many social networking options to deal with on a day to day basis and no time to stop and analyse each network on their own merits.
It's like shopping... we need a supermarket site that displays them all in one place, aggregates, assimilates, organises by content, topic, use, focus, geography etc
One point on profile input for all networks and then elect which you want to connect with and which you want to receive information from...
Maybe it exists, maybe we should build it...

Interesting discussion here. I'm a huge supporter of less social networks, not more. At most 3 that you really want to develop for a certain time period, or until you've gotten what you want out of it.

I only join a new network if 1) I see the potential and think it'll really add value to my life 2) More than 5 real life friends use it.

So when someone sends me an invite to identi.ca, you won't find me signing up for it because it's just another Twitter to me.

I think that mass population social networks that try to cover every demographic are becoming like reality television shows; you can't tell one from the other. It's just too much! Niche social networks on the other hand are a worthy effort, having something to offer to the world wide web.
