A simple answer to this one.

    You join when you're ready.

When am I personally ready? When I start hearing people I know and admire referring to the new social network the same way they refer to email, text and phone calls.

    "FaceBook me tomorrow?"

Or "I MySpaced her all about it."

Or "Are you on Twitter? Follow me there."

On the other hand, if it's really cool, I might join before I'm really ready by that standard.

I just love diving into things early on. It used to be less enjoyable, but since Twitter, it's much easier for me to find others to connect with in new services, making it easier for me to find out just what the new social network can (or can't) do for me.

Many of them I wind up using for a couple of months and not paying much attention to after that, but if somebody asks about them, I have first hand experience to share with them.

If you think about it every social network has the same thing - your user profile and your status updates (and some uploads like photos).
We should be able to create them once and have them fed to each network we're connected to. I can't see going to each site and uploading the same photos, recreating all the friends, etc.

I am finding this an issue for me as well, and I am not involved with nearly as many communities as you are. I find I want to be involved, want to connect, but only can put effort into a few. I am thinning myself out and beginning things for no real reason than just to.

This is why I think smaller social networking sites that focus on a specific topic will have more of an impact in years to come than what peopel think at this time. Facebook is great for raising numbers, but it is become less and less of a place to actually communicate.

just wanna point that Orkut is pretty much THE social network in countries like Brazil (and maybe some others in L.A.), while Facebook remains unknown for most ppl.

    go figure.

When it comes to pure social networking sites, I stick with the ones my friends are using. Lately, I've been finding more specialty networking sites for people with shared interests and hobbies. My new favorite is Ravelry, a knitting themed network.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in the aggregator space. Services like Minggl (a Firefox plugin) offer access to friends in all my networks. The user experience doesn't seem polished enough yet in the plugins & sites I've tried, but the prospect of a quick, usable interface to all my networks' friend data is pretty appealing.

I think that mass population social networks that try to cover every demographic are becoming like reality television shows; you can't tell one from the other. It's just too much! Niche social networks on the other hand are a worthy effort, having something to offer to the world wide web.

Interesting discussion here. I'm a huge supporter of less social networks, not more. At most 3 that you really want to develop for a certain time period, or until you've gotten what you want out of it.

I only join a new network if 1) I see the potential and think it'll really add value to my life 2) More than 5 real life friends use it.

So when someone sends me an invite to identi.ca, you won't find me signing up for it because it's just another Twitter to me.

    Keep it simple.

I agree that there are too many social networking options to deal with on a day to day basis and no time to stop and analyse each network on their own merits.
It's like shopping... we need a supermarket site that displays them all in one place, aggregates, assimilates, organises by content, topic, use, focus, geography etc
One point on profile input for all networks and then elect which you want to connect with and which you want to receive information from...
Maybe it exists, maybe we should build it...
Hey, thanks for a stimulating read too!

    Hey Dave-
We met back at blog business summit in 2006 I believe. Anyway, I honestly don't know how people keep up with, yet alone utilize, more than about 4 social networks. I get quite a few invites as well, and pretty much ignore all of them unless it comes from a VERY good friend. I just don't have time to deal with all these random social networks. The only ones I use regularly are facebook and mybloglog, and sometimes I log onto twitter. I haven't logged in to myspace for over 3 months -- though this comment just made me think I should go check to see if anyone not on facebook is trying to get ahold of me. Good topic of conversation.

I believe that is much better to be fully engaged and connected in a few networks, than only minmally engaged and connected in a number of them.

    Dream Big.

Dave, the thing I try to keep in mind is, "What's my strategy or intent for a given network?" And, how does it fit the ecosystem? If I can't answer that, I don't give the network any attention. It usually boils down to: with whom can I connect about a certain interest in the new network? Be there with purpose.

I think when a particular network gains momentum as in I get comfortable using it there is interaction happening to and fro then I could also try something new.
No point if I am already struggling handling the existing accounts :)

Having more of the same broad based socnets is too confusing. I do agree however with what many others have said in these comments where there is room for social groups build around shared interests...just like the real world you can have a book club or a bowling club.

Now whether these 'groups' are built on an existing socnet like facebook or orkut, stand alone, or a mash up of both is a different question and one which I would be interested in hearing yours and others opinions.

Hey, I can barely keep up as it is now. If I accept more invites to join up I'll have to double my caffeine consumption. I already sneeze with my eyes open. And lately I've started chewing on OTHER people's finger nails. Not good. Not relaxing for sure. If you're wondering how you know you've had way too much coffee -- and you need to lighten up with a little humor, go here:

Sharon, you reminded me good ol' days when I could still get coffee without feeling sorry for my stomach (tears all around)...

btw, #19 ("You want to be cremated so you can spend the rest of eternity in a coffee can") is already in a post morten to-do list (whatever that is).

social networks make me get sick, yes they are a great tool to be close to our family and friends but it has turned into an annoying place with all those widgets, spam and many unwanted requests, there all still a couple of good SN but looks like they are taking the same direction

So what are the obscure social networks that you trust?
