Mashable - The Social Media Guide: What Does Google Think of Twitter? [Pic]

  • Scott · 3 months ago
how is this a 'story'?? Just type 'facebook is' or 'Microsoft is' or 'USA is' and you'll see all the same type of auto-complete phrases.

    Big deal.
  • Michael Bauser · 3 months ago
But you get nothing for "Mashable is" -- clear proof that nobody really cares about this site, I guess.
  • TommyTwoTimes · 3 months ago
You must be one of them gays.
  • r0uter · 3 months ago
These aren't googles opinions silly :P

My favorite one that turned up when I tried it: Google is skynet.
  • Inoperante · 3 months ago
What it actually shows is what most people think of Twitter/Google/Facebook etc...except we all know they don't. People love to hate more than they love to love.
  • martani_net · 3 months ago
I love this "People love to hate more than they love to love." so kewl
  • celine · 3 months ago
Amazing ;) I've tested with Google France and results are funny for Google. 403 millions for "google is your friend", sentence so popular now...
But the results are still "negative" for twitter... 43 millions (best request) for "twitter is down". Probably cause of the DDos last week.

Thx for all of your articles, such interesting, even over the Atlantic ;)

Its not too surprising because twitter would be the stiffest competition for Google wave.
  • ehab · 3 months ago

  • Jason · 3 months ago
Type in "Google is" and you get similar results.
  • Neightron · 3 months ago
    You're right!

They say, "Google is always right, & Google is your friend, etc..."
  • tom · 3 months ago
Autocomplete: useful tool and source of unintentional comedy, or terrifying insight into the collective mind at work. The answer's here, I think...

    ...and it's "both"

    This was....Link bait
    This was....A waste of time
  • Ghassan Yonis · 3 months ago
Funny! But wouldn't it be more accurate if you used Facebook instead of Twitter?

Try typing in "I am extremely".
Look at the first result :D
  • davidmbigler · 3 months ago
I often get a good laugh from autofill - it gives great insight into what people are searching for. For fun, try searching for these and let autofill do the rest:
    can you
    will i
    was she
    do i have
    what if i
    i just got
    how to

It's that "is" in the search term. Who puts "is" after what they're searching for?

You should just try your own first name:

    "adam is "...

According to Google I'm a fat, god like, loser who is a black sexy fag that likes to restore the coolness in lucifer.
  • Dorian Roy · 3 months ago
    try "i am.." ;)
  • jorgeavilam · 3 months ago
Hehe, well this is not a good start for #GoogleAndTwitterWillBecomeOne
  • Tweeminence · 3 months ago
I'm assuming these kind of results come up for just about any popular medium...amusing though
  • Ginger · 3 months ago
Check out Is Google Making Us Dumber (gdumb.com) for more finds of this kind.
    Yes another good timewaster, enjoy!
  • Breon · 3 months ago
I doubt that Google has anything to do with the results that are shown. That's not a smart move on their part.

If you type "Best Buy is" you get results like: "is a rip off", "is going out of business", "is closing" (see http://www.twitpic.com/dilph)

Just because the mass population think that Twitter is retarded (myself excluded) doesn't mean that Google does.

That was the old @Google I think! @benparr WOWed & cleared that up right away. Just a guess ~ I just had 9 beers :-/ ...kinda hammered.

At least someone got it right.
  • Matt · 3 months ago
Google has some pretty racist opinions! Try some variations on "why do white people".
  • thunkr · 3 months ago
Interesting that it has nothing to say about Bing. "bing is" didnt suggest anything :-)
  • Jose · 3 months ago
Google doesn't "think" anything. The autocomplete results are generated by popular queries searched on Google.
  • OhhJohnny · 3 months ago
Try "Chinese people" and see what "Google" thinks.
  • Gerrit · 3 months ago
haha.. did you try typing "google is" - nearly the same suggestions... :)
  • FYIlive · 3 months ago
Google isn't hard coding the Suggestion List. The suggestions are based on popular search queries (article/webpages covering those topics). If someone wrote an article "Twitter is ...reliable and safe" and received traffic and links this phrase would likely make it to the "Twitter is.." Google suggestion list.

Google must really have a sense of humor if they are infact manually controlling their Search Suggestion results, someone let "Yahoo is... better than Google" slide :)
  • bhartzer · 3 months ago
That's funny. It's not Google's fault they think that way, that's the impression that Twitter gives.
  • G. Liu · 3 months ago
Either the whole world hates Twitter or just Google does. I wonder what would happen in Yahoo, Bing or other search engines. Twitter is always stressing out.
  • davereinhardt · 3 months ago
Google thinks even less of Friendfeed. "Friendfeed is" returns no autocompletes. Neither does Mashable (sorry guys). Apparently flickr either slow, down or free - that's not bad. It can be confusing, George Bush is an idiot, an alien and/or an islamic fundamentalist. That's okay, the world's greatest statesman - Nelson Mandela, is either a terrorist, a hero, dead or alive. It's a pretty confusing mix of statuses. I could do this all night, the gags basically write themselves.
  • IBE JOSEPH C · 3 months ago
I think this is funny. Thats what people think but twitter is cool. The world is just angry!!!!

Although the only reason this shows up in suggestions is because this is how people actually think of twitter, i.e. those are real search queries, this still cracks me up, because I really do think "Twitter is Retarded" LMFAO LLOOLOL HAHAH

If you search "facebook is," it comes up with similar results, probably all the senior citizens who want to know what web 2.0 elements are.
  • MyaLynn · 3 months ago
that was too funny! I tried lots of them, even typed in facebook.

    Add me to your twitter

  • gracy · 3 months ago
I tried for "Bing is" and got zero results =P
  • Sarah · 3 months ago
I bet of all the people who looked at this post, myself included, almost all of them will have gone onto Google and typed both 'Google is' and 'Twitter is' as well as a range of other similar entries. I guess that's the power of communication and information on the web. And long may it live.
  • Jimmy Liew · 3 months ago
We wouldn't know what is actually hide behind the scene. But there are 2 points that clearly proves are... 1st, this definitely some programmers tricks; 2nd, the guy who found this he really waste his time in googling.. :)
  • willduke · 3 months ago
Though I haven't embraced the service like some have, these results may be a little harsh. Either way, I got a laugh :)

Just type in searchbox "Google is" and see what Google thinks about itself lol
  • Bowan · 2 months ago
Whoa google says negative things about facebook, twitter, yahoo and altavista to name a few. I wonder if its actually just a reflection of peoples opinions in blogs and forums etc?
  • Bowan · 2 months ago
Check out his website I found on the first page when I searched 'twitter is'
    http://whentwitterisdown.com/
considering it has a google page rank of 4 and a really crap alexa rating its interesting it appears on the first page for 'twitter is'
  • rdub · 1 month ago
