Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Web Browser Faceoff: Mozilla Firefox vs. Google Chrome

  • dc crowley · 2 months ago
No offense but this is meaningless. You are asking opinions :) I want facts. I'd rather see test results instead of a poll! Which starts faster? which loads faster? which has the most display or security bugs? which has the most features? 5 chrome features which firefox misses. 5 Firefox features chrome misses... the possibilities are endless imo :)
  • Name · 2 months ago
adblock. Chrome will never have it because google is an advertising company.
  • Name · 2 months ago
Sir, there is already a extension avaliable for Google Chrome to block ads.
  • SEO Services · 2 months ago
I love the speed of Chrome but you can't deny the seo add ons that Firefox offers. Plus, I still find many sites that are just not tested using Chrome.
  • tom_thinks · 2 months ago
Ad Block makes Firefox the winner even without any other considerations
  • Dion Jones · 2 months ago
The similarity in results of this poll prove how thin a line it is between having too much and too little ability to modify the platform the user is given. Though Firefox is a tried and true browser with many years under its belt and a record for ripping Windows users away from the Microsoft dominated desktop, Google Chrome has slipped in and taken a large portion of that market in a very quick time frame. Firefox was, and still is, created for the computer geek. Most people who get Firefox either are computer geeks or know one that encourages them to make the leap. And it seems almost impossible to run Firefox without installing at least 1 or 2 add-ons. The difficulty here comes when Grandma simply can't figure out how to work all these little do-hickeys. Even Internet Explorer has moved closer to Firefox in this respect, offering up many options and making things uncomfortable for the computer novice.

Google has pulled into this debate rather suddenly and offered a solution that is mind-numbingly simple. The interface has very few buttons on it and works very intuitively. How many times has Grandma tried to search for something directly in the URL area, only to end up at a 404 site, or worse, some sort of virus finds it's way in. Though many power users are crying for add-ons, others are begging for a more simple and stream-lined interface.

Despite the heavy differences between Firefox and Google Chrome, it seems these two browsers are off to the races. Firefox has to prove that it can simplify itself for the novice, and Chrome must prove that it can add more under the hood to interest the computer geek. And it seems Internet Explorer is being left out to dry here, even though nearly every PC comes with Internet Explorer pre-installed. The age of the geek is here, and no software will survive without our endorsement.

Going to have to go with Chrome here, while I have been an avid user of FF since it came out, this past month I've been fiddling around with Chrome and found in much faster, enough to notice a good 3 or so second difference. Yes, I know a lot of people like FF's customization, but the only real addon that I use is a furigana injector and rikiachan for kanji definitions to read Japan newspapers, other then that, most of it is superficial, like Personas. Chrome, while it does not have a vast library of addons is great none the less for a few things. It's beautiful in it's simplicity, top of browser feels less crowded, and as I mentioned earlier, noticeably faster (in comparison to FF 3.5). I'm slowly moving towards using Chrome for everything except when I want to read Japanese newspapers. I vote Chrome, because I think it's better for the average user and they're not going to need a bunch of fancy apps like greasemonkey. EDIT: Just woke up this morning and remembered another feature that I love that Chrome has but FF doesn't. When a tab becomes unresponsive in FF, it brings the whole browser down, yes, you can restore it easily, but it's still annoying and takes time. In Chrome, if a tab becomes unresponsive, only that tab closes. So again, it's the many subtle things that Chrome does that ultimately make it a better browser.

I'm a loyal Google fan, and initially I loved Chrome and thought it was my new favorite browser. But as I used it more and more, I realized how limited it was. Couldn't install my bookmarking buttons for del.icio.us, couldn't customize at all really, and to top it all off it started freezing up all the time and crashing (usually due to an unresponsive shockwave plug-in). I switched back to Firefox, and I have to say that I prefer it for now. Sorry Google!
  • mansun79 · 2 months ago
I hate the fact that I cannot improve the way Chrome renders fonts. That is the reason I came back to Firefox. Otherwise I would still be using Chrome.

Firefox. The extensions do it all.

I like Chrome, even though it's not easy to install in my Linux distro. But it just doesn't have the features Firefox does, although it's bloody well faster.

Firefox for the powerful extensions and easy adoption across operating systems.
  • joebrooks · 2 months ago
The reason I love chrome is because it doesn't have any addons or extensions.
  • yongshun · 2 months ago
    Same.

I like its simplicity. It is light and fast. Simply, it is just a browser!

but sometimes because of its simplicity, it feels that it is lacking something.
  • dyegov · 2 months ago
I also seemed to like its simplicity before, but after a while the lack simply shows. That, and it was being really buggy to me for some strange reason I don't know >.<
  • milandroid · 2 months ago
you can have your firefox without having any add-ons on... but well, i like you saying you like chrome :)
  • Jeremy Goldstone · 2 months ago
Anyone want to bet that when Chrome gets the add ons, it slows down to Firefox speeds?
  • Joshua Novak · 2 months ago
I love almost everything about Google Chrome. Many of the addons and extensions in Firefox can be achieved by adding them to your iGoogle and keeping it sitting in a tab.
  • Name · 2 months ago
Apparently you've never used "real" addons and extensions for Firefox.
  • Wayne Luke · 2 months ago
Not really... None of the addons I use can be replicated in iGoogle. Only thing I like about Chrome is the little spy guy icon when you're in an Incognito icon. I personally like Windows as my preferred OS because I am used to it and I haven't used a Mac since OSX came out. Simply don't like OSX personally. If Chrome adopted my OS interface it would be better. I can do that with Firefox. Primarily why I have addons.
  • Blake Raue · 2 months ago
Although I do like Chrome, and it is admittedly faster than firefox, I have too much enjoyed control over Firefox, I have everything customized just the way I like it and I don't like not being able to have that, so unless Chrome comes out with some astronomically awesome extension system, I'm sticking with Firefox.
  • Harald · 2 months ago
Sandboxing is important to me, so Chrome (or IE8) is how I roll.
  • Aviraj Saluja · 2 months ago
I voted Chrome but Firefox is my primary browser, by a long shot.

The extensions are just impossible for me to ignore. I use Chrome only for speed and some flash heavy websites. But sooner or later, Google will unleash the power of addons and the world will be fair again. I'm sure of it.
  • killerfiller · 2 months ago
Firefox for me because of the add-ons.
  • RJ Proie · 2 months ago
I presume that Google will make a superior product in the end, but Firefox is so customizable that it's changed the experience of browsing.
  • Andy · 2 months ago
Don't forget that every feature that Firefox has was stolen from Opera - tabs (including simple things like dragging them and dropping), saving and restoring sessions, link suggestions when entering address in the address bar, etc.
  • Wade A. Inganamort · 2 months ago
I've used both frequently, yet found that on slower machines Opera runs almost 2x as fast + it has voice recognition features the top dogs lack.

Firefox is the best because It rarely crashes anymore and extensions make it more useful than a browser should be. Even I use Chrome from time to time, but really, it don’t do anything better than Firefox.
  • dragonblogger · 2 months ago
The new Chrome is slightly faster when compared against FF 3.5, however, I tested against MineField which is the Alpha version of FF 3.7 and it is faster than Chrome. Even with Chrome slightly faster, Firefox has an edge from the plugins which make it more valuable.
  • dyegov · 2 months ago
Even that, I bet that Firefox 4.0 is going to be way faster still. I can't wait for to come out... some day.
  • Stephen Bates · 2 months ago
Chrome has a ways to go in terms of compatibility and extensions, but for me it runs faster than Firefox.
  • Aditya Shah · 2 months ago
Firefox beats Chrome hands down when it comes to Extensions & Customizations. Also, IMHO Firefox is noway a slower browser, even when compared to Chrome.
  • Yogesh Agarwal · 2 months ago
I like Firefox coz of the power of extensions.
  • Mayav Madon · 2 months ago
Have nothing against either, just that for some freak reason I cant use Firefox at work because it interfears with work software running on IE6 !!!!!!
Chrome on the other hand is super fast and doesnot interfear with my work software.
  • dyegov · 2 months ago
IE6? Now, talk about outdated... I usually just plain hate IE, but if you make me choose, I'd go for an update to IE8 anyday, any second.
  • Lender · 2 months ago
I am surprised by your comment that Chrome is substantially faster than Firefox, because the Chrome browser in my computer is very sluggish and prone to bugs. I also find its user interface a little too minimalist.
  • Joanne Glasspoole · 2 months ago
Although I voted for Firefox, I like Google Chrome better. What I like most is the speed.
  • LeRoy · 2 months ago
I am torn. I love my firefox, but I am using chrome more and more for my default browsing. I also am digging the builtin dev tools that chrome has. I still run into issues with sites not allowing Chrome to browse them, however. Hopefully that will change with time.
  • Saptarshi · 2 months ago
Chrome bowls me over with its simplicity. The omnibar is extremely useful. Add to that the upcoming (and now live on the Dev channel) bookmark sync. It's lightning fast. I have been using it since the first minute it was launched and loving it!
  • dyegov · 2 months ago
How could I forget about the Omnibar!!! That thing is the most amazing thing Chrome has! Well, Firefox will have it in V4, which I can't wait for!

They are too distinctive to compare with each other.

Chrome is good for Webapps, while Firefox extensions are best for dev use. Can't be compared until they have similar features.

I use Chrome at work (as I use Windows), and FF at home (as I use Linux). When there is a proper (non-Beta) Linux version of Chrome I will give it a proper go, and hopefully by then there will be support for NoScript & AdBlockPlus extensions!

Chrome is nice and fast, and the Sandbox is great. But FF has addons, that for home use really do sell it for me in the end!

Nothing can beat Firefox, people are saying they like Chrome because it's faster (it's not for me) but what browser will get the job done in the end? Firefox is simply a better experience, and I can go on forever about extensions, customizations, little tips and tricks etc.
  • Mossak · 2 months ago

  • Matt · 2 months ago
Chrome is great, but until it has extensions (Adblock, xmarks, greasemonkey, for a start), it won't compete with firefox. And it also doesn't stably run on Linux yet, which makes it useless for me. Still, I'm willing to be challenged in future.
  • Faisal Rahman · 2 months ago
I must agree that Chrome is a bit faster than FF but at end what really matters is experience, ... and that's where FF beats Chrome by a million miles, ... so many extensions at your disposal that you can possibly think of, ... and someday when Chrome came out with extension system, ... i bet, it will definitely became slower ...

  • gcy · 2 months ago
these tweek will make firefox the fastest:
    user_pref("content.interrupt.parsing", false);

    user_pref("content.sink.event_probe_rate", 20);

It's Firefox for me. Really straight. I lñove how stable and reliable it is, and most of all, the extensions it has. Chrome is good in my opinion, but it still needs a lot of refinements to compare to Firefox's years of experience on the field.

Being a Mac user and web designer, I have to say that Firefox is my pick because of its excellent add-ons and compatability.
  • milandroid · 2 months ago
i personally am a google fan if not a hardcore one. chrome can incorporate all the google service and products naturally. the firefox extension IS powerful, but google will have that large scales of add-ons soon as also an open source browser.
we can see that chrome itself will develop into an OS that based on the browser. it's a good reason why chrome is more promising than firefox.
i saw the current results indicating more than half of votes went to firefox. i understand that. it's only because chrome is much younger.
and there certainly is some brand-loyalty issues in it
  • dyegov · 2 months ago
Well, I just installed chrome once again to give it a try since first time was long ago, and it really surprised me. The lunch time is nearly non-existent, so fast to open. What I found nice is how the omnibar predicts the sites I want to visit so well! I just wrote mash and it gave me the direct like to Mashable right away on the first option. Same for gmail, twitter and facebook. I find that nice. I'll continue to try it and see how it goes :)

Speed can be a nuisance with Firefox, but still... Nothing can beat its customization.
  • MurrayC · 2 months ago
Chrome? Firefox? Depends on where I am surfing from. Seriously. When at home, I use Chrome for its speed and stability which [again, at home] leaves Firefox in the dust. But when at work, Firefox wins hands down against Chrome for the same reasons. Could it be firewall settings? Quality/speed of servers? I am NOT a techie by any stretch of the imagination, and I don't usually fiddle with any browser settings for fear of fawking it up, but I do like to try new things and experiment until I decide what is best for me.

Firefox is better by a long shot. It has so much features, with notasmuch complicated interface. Google chrome's interface may be simple, but it's TOO simple. I went back to firefox from chrome cuz I had no idea how to use it. Other than an address bar, it was a blank piece of crap.
  • Scott · 2 months ago
Firefox wins for one simple reason, plugins or addons. Whichever name you use they are what enhances and personalizes the browsing experience for Firefox. Until Chrome has that option I'll stick with Firefox.

Sadly, I don't see Adblock Plus coming to Chrome anytime soon since Google was built on ad revenue and Adblock Plus stops that in its tracks.

I voted for Firefox. 3 words: Web Developer Toolbar
  • Petr Faitl · 2 months ago
In my opinion you can't compare them that way. For day-to-day use (for me) they have completely different uses.

FF is the sledge-hammer. I use that for administering websites, uploading to online storage (fireFTP & fire uploader), polishing code (firebug), etc. For me it is the Swiss Army knife, which can do a lot of things and gets you out of trouble when you need it...

At the same time you wouldn't use your Swiss army knife in the kitchen for preparing your daily meal.

Therefore, I use Chrome (dev channel) for speed and general user friendliness. No bloatware (extensions) to slow down performance or launching. Which for me is the perfect Chef's knife.... One purpose, dedicated tool!

My daily pain. I installed Chrome to try it out. It's now my default browser and I can't seem to change that. I also can't uninstall it, the uninstall just doesn't work. I love the speed and the UI, so much more screen space than all the crowded toolbars and menu bar on Firefox. That said, there are a few Firefox extensions I cannot live without--chiefly Feedly and Aviary. Now that FF 3.5 is out and fast enough (though not as fast as Chrome), I'm clearly in the FF camp. (But whenever I click a link, here comes Chrome as my default. >:| )

  • Antijoe · 2 months ago
It would be Chrome hands down if you could have plugins like Adblock plus and TwitterFox (TwitterChrome?). The plugins give firefox the edge.
  • ArleyM · 2 months ago
    They both have a lot going for them; but I think the way Chrome deals with Tabs is the best: 1. You can drag a tab out to be a new window (I use all the time w/ multimonitors);
    2. when you ctrl click a link it opens as the next tab to the right, not the last tab.

One thing both don't have (that IE does!) is ctrl+shift backspace to delete entire words. I miss that keyshort!
  • Shmuli Evers · 2 months ago

The funny thing is, I use Opera and Firefox but not Chrome. I find Firefox fast enough (faster than Opera, then again, most people don't realize Opera is almost as customizable as Firefox). Firefox will slow down your computer if you have too many extensions, so you have to choose wisely. I hate Chrome, I'd much rather Google made a Feed Reader, that's something I could really get behind.
  • facebook-21601207 · 2 months ago
I can live without the visual themes of Firefox (such as Personas) as I love the glassy simplicity of Chrome, however add-ons like FireGestures, User Agent Switcher, XMarks and Ubiquity I use all too often to leave them all for Chrome.

I pop Chrome open occasionally when something is just loading way too slow in FF, as the speed of Chrome is quite noticeably faster, but that is about it. If Google wants to be successful with Chrome they absolutely need to allow and build a library extensions and add-ons to increase customization and usability. Until then I just can't switch over.

While Chrome is much faster and sleeker, Firefox has loads of cool add-ons, is more standards compliant (although, it is probably shoddy code causing sites it display improperly in Chrome), and doesn't crash as often.

Firefox gets my vote now... but if Chrome starts supporting Silverlight and get's add-ons... it would win

Try Firefox 3.7a1pre and you'll be saying Chrome 4 is slow! It loads huge sites like CNN, FoxNews, and MySpace as though it were 3.5 on steroids on speed. Just remember to change the about:config setting so it ignores extension compatibility and enables them all.

Its a close one On the one hand, The plethora of add ons available with firefox really makes me productive, but lately I have been using Chrome because its faster and doesn't gobble up my RAM the way firefox does.

A totally unscientific, but user-centric comparison between the browsers... (conclusion is that FireFox wins).... is here:

It amazes me thjat people voted for Firefox. Im disappointed . I used chrome for months now as my default browser. I would not switch back to firefox even if someone gave me the money to do so , seriously. Chrome is THE modern, intuitive, fastest browser at the moment.

I like Google chrome over firefox when you compare it without considering the add ons. Else I consider Firefox, since it has huge list of add ons which is indespensible.

The browser in the world is Chrome. Although it doesn't have extensions that are coming in the way it's very fast, good, and it's from Google.

I have been a firefox user for a long...and to be honest I never even gave Chrome a second thought. I like firefox, I use firefox, so firefox is my obvious choice.
