Six years ago my husband died and his final request was don't spend a ton of money on a burial box. The funeral parlor was selling caskets that were expensive and they also rented caskets. The rental casket was over $1000 and was very ugly. At some point each one of us might have to make a decision on purchasing a casket. I made a choice based on my personal belief system, as well as finances. If one is concerned about where products are made then one must investigate the origin of the product. I investigated the origins of the caskets from the funeral parlor, some were made in the US and some overseas. I was looking on the internet and found the website of the Benedictine monks. Their philosophy was beautiful. As Benedictine monks, they serve God through a life of prayer, silence, humble work and hospitality. The casket was beautiful (real wood and hand made) and reflected my husbands philosophy of life as well. I have never regretted the purchase. Best to all who have to make these heartfelt decisions.

I had seen a casket in the garden department of my Walmart about two years It was up on the highest shelf and I asked about it. The clerk said she thought they were test marketing them at that store. It caused more commotion than they wanted to receive after word spread.

You can also by caskets from other national online retailers. just google caskets and you will get a list. I have purchased a casket for my father at www.24hourcaskets.com and I am extremely happy with the way they helped us during the process. 24hourcaskets.com has caskets that are far less expensive than walmart, costco and other retailers. Check them out.

sure they are. after all, Wal-Mart got bought out by a Chinese company so the caskets are made by Indonesian 5 year olds. If it was still an American company then it would be Japanese 4 year olds making them.

I've been selling my urns and flag cases at costco.com for the last several years. As the economy has declined, sales have only increased. People don't seem to mind saving a lot of money by buying through costco.com so I believe the same will happen with Walmart. I work at a funeral home and after my father came in and made his prearrangement, the specialist took me downstairs and showed me the casket he'd picked out. It was so butt ugly, I didn't know whether to cry or smack him over the head. (It's a cremation casket...that's the first problem.)

After reading Peter's post, I checked out 24hourcaskets.com and liked what I found. Hopefully I'll remember them when the time comes...many, many years from now, the gods willing!

Costco has been selling caskets for a number of Years. The Funeral Industry is really a sham because they sell to those in grief a lot of things that are unnecessary. It seems like your funeral should resemble those of the rich when all you can afford is the white pine box.

It's good and it's bad. Good that it increases price competition, given that funerals cost a fortune ("everyone must die, and so you must pay"). Bad that it's WalMart, not exactly the saint of ethics.

I am glad WalMart's site pointed out the item is non-returnable unless damaged during shipping. I'd imagine it would be difficult to sell a "slightly used" casket.

Actually, Walmart, Costco, and Casket stores don't have anyone over a barrel, least of all funeral homes. In areas where people are actively buying caskets outside of the funeral home, funeral homes sell caskets at cost and recover their operating overhead completely out of their Professional Service Charges instead. This actually helps funeral homes, because it lowers their funeral bill to the family. It's completely legal as long as they do this to everyone. It's no different than a car mechanic charging a higher hourly rate if you supply your own auto parts. You can't force funeral homes to provide their services without the ability to recover their operating overhead. Personally, I wouldn't want to do business with any business that was struggling to recoup their overhead. That's when the shady stuff starts happening!

I find it awful that Wal-mart has nothing more to do with its money than promote something of that nature. They should spend more time and money helping its employees live better and save more but hell our health plan is garbage and unaffordable maybe they will start taking deductions out of our payroll check so that after they work us to death we can have that taken care of. I am embarassed as an employee that I work for a company who does this. Especially when we donate money to a fund that we can not use if someone in our immediate family dies what are they gonna give me a boot leg coffin. They should be trying to figure out how they are going to give us more hours and stop cheating us out of money with bull crap eval that dont make since so they dont have to give us raises after we work like dogs making them money so they can corner the market in death. Sam Walton would be dissapointed. Wal-Mart live better save money die then get burried cheap.
