    I predict colossal failure.

If they need the masses to adopt this -- well, there's a reason why most VCRs would be seen flashing "12:00." People don't want to have to mess with stuff.

I can think of only two or three times in the last couple of years I could have used the "collaborative" feature of this. Most of my communications are one-on-one, and email suits that just peachy. I don't need to see "conversations" in a stream -- in fact this is a feature I don't care for in Gmail, but I endure it -- and I don't use Gmail all that much, probably because it just looks messy. I like subject lines and easy chronology, and I can search for what I need to find again -- and don't often really have to rely on archives of these "conversations" anyway.

One thing I especially DON'T like, is the "live typing" idea. There is a reason for the backspace key. When I'm ready to hit send, I hit send. Before then, you don't need to see my indecisions. Plus -- you can edit other people's input? Then THEY can edit MY input as well??? How in blazes is this any kind of a neat idea? "I DIDN'T SAY THAT! HOW'D THAT GET IN THERE?"

I comment on something once in a blue moon. I don't often need to work out some problem with a group of people online. A Wiki? Why do I need a wiki? This is something for hardcore internetters, not the general public. I read through lots to try to just figure out what the hell this does, and I didn't see one thing that is useful to me as a casual electronic communicator.

As a whole, this looks massively lame if anyone things it's going to be forced on the public to embrace. It looks useful for SOME people. So, count me among the Knights who say, "Niche!"

    Soooo... it's a chat room?

This is only one function of Wave. There are many, many, MANY more uses. And each group of people that gets their invites will only bring more applications.
  • Mike Lapidakis · 2 months ago
They are nominations not invites. Begging isn't gonna get you on wave today. I wish mashable would ban comments asking for invites so people can actually have an intelligent conversation in the comments.
  • Name · 2 months ago
Then, what's the best way to get on wave?... We beg because that's the only thing we can do.
  • camkevbell · 2 months ago
The invite model is amazingly effective! It drives people to distraction and generates a buzz frenzy. Twitter is drowning in invite requests. I must admit, I've made the rounds trying to get an invite of my own. It's difficult to have an intelligent conversation about a product you haven't tried yet. Although outright begging should be beneath us all, politely requesting an invite is to be expected eh?

Wave is great so far, but I need more contacts before it'll even be halfway useful. Not one of the people I've invited has gotten their invite yet.

On a side note, I'm wishing it had the ability to function in an email capacity and send/receive messages to email addresses from within Waves.

oh boy yet another way for a private company to own all of our conversations, data, etc - does anybody, anyone, just one other person out there still care about privacy? What the F are privacy policies for anyway? Just give all the details of your life away to some company for a really cool slick new thing. sad.

Hello there! This video actually helped my parents understand what Google Wave really was. Big applause for Epipheo studios! However if anybody beholds a spare invite, if they could possible give me a tweet on Twitter that would be Steaksauce! (Awesome in How I Met Your Mother).

    Cheers

What if Google Wave fails ? I see a lot of reason why it could fail wether it's google or not.

Because if they aim at beiing a really big social thing, well a lot of users don't even use gmail, a lot of others don't use google docs or readers, a lot of users are starting to use bing, the only potential users are the usuals devs and power users, a

And a lot of them feel insulted by this not so open source (i'd rather say vip source) product, other wavers can't even use it because they can't invite friends to join (google is lying to dev when saying that you can send them), and by the time it gets released a lot of people will have forget it, maybe some alternatives will come up, but really don't count to me to spread the wave, I hope this product dies.

I've found quite quickly that too many people need help!
To get an invite AND to see a quite descriptive video about Wave, simply go to http://wave.google.com where there's an invites link and a button to watch a 1h 20m 11s video.

Finally somebody says what "it" is, instead of parabolic hype about "if you want it, here it is; come and get it. But you'd better hurry, 'cause it's going fast!" So thanks for that.

I remain a bit skeptical about allegedly earth-shattering things that must be explained in half-an-hour, though. Thomas Edison didn't need half-an-hour to explain what a light bulb was.

My current question remaining is, what about spam? Does this do anything to make it go away? I get, like, 1,000 pieces of spam a day and spend maybe an hour a week making sure good mail isn't in there and so on. It is a worse crime than having a drug dealer down the street, I would assert.
