The fee is only if you transmit your personal files to the Kindle via Sprint's wireless network. You can still use Amazon's free file conversion service to transfer your files to the Kindle via USB for free.

I really want a kindle so i've been learning about the functionality recently. I'm not sure i understand why they charge? do the documents stored on the kindle actually get stored on their servers? is this why the price? I just assumed the kindle worked like an iPod where your songs (or books) get stored on your computer and you just paid the price to purchase them. Therefore documents (on the kindle, or photos on the iPod) souldn't have a charge... does this make sense?

I thought it was like an iPod, too. I'm simply too cheap to buy one right now, but it is good to know all the costs associated with it up front.

I'm not 100% surprised by this move. You have to think about the fact that Amazon doesn't charge for access to the Whisper network. Giving people the ability to upload large documents via their network has to come at a cost.

this isn't exactly true. Amazon's website has always stated as such, but I noticed I had not been incurring any charges, so I contacted their customer service department. I was told that they were waiving the fee temporarily... In the year I've had my Kindle this is the first time I've been charged for wireless uploading of personal documents.
