Mashable - The Social Media Guide: UberTwitter: Now With Uber Annoying Ads

  • Benjamin Solah · 3 months ago
I hate ads and if I can find a better app without ads, I'll gladly swap. But it's kind of too be expected. We live in a profit-driven society and businesses don't do anything unless they can make some cash out of it.

The thing that annoys me is that heaps of the ads are for porn. Not only is it offensive to women, I'm using UberTwitter at work and don't want my boss looking casually over my shoulder and seeing a half-naked woman on my screen.
  • AMgirl · 3 months ago
I'm pretty sure porn isn't only offensive to women, and I doubt all women are offended by porn.

And I doubt Ubertwitter would allow porn adds as in general you'd hear a lot of complaints regardless. As you said, no one wants someone catching that from over their shoulder.
  • Benjamin Solah · 3 months ago
I agree with you. That's why I said "not only." I'm a men and am offended by the objectification of women in advertising and I don't to look at that shit when I look at Twitter.
  • brandonhess · 3 months ago
Oh internet and your demands that everything should be free, catered to your exact specifications and unprofitable for the people that created it for you.

Maybe all the people bemoaning that the application that they didn't pay for should send Ubertwitter a check in the mail so they don't have to figure out ways like this to pay for their overhead.
  • identify_urself · 3 months ago
    I couldn't agree more!!!!
  • YourRoyalHighness · 3 months ago
I would gladly pay for an application if it meant I didn't have to put up with the ads. They said 'ads would disappear' with the premium version which I was lead to believe was available right now.... This is just silly and their icon looks like sh*t. Back to twitterberry for me.

Cry me a F%#!@#! river whinebags!
  • Hercules K · 3 months ago
what do you mean, this is serious lol
  • Adam Shoes · 3 months ago
I stopped using it because of this.
  • blckbrry · 3 months ago
    Me too.

And I didn't like the fact that after installing the application it requests permissions to access EVERYTHING on my Blackberry... including mail access, phone access, security access... I mean what the heck, an application should request changes ONLY to the permissions it will actually use.

I asked @ubertwitter about the permissions which are really needed for the application to accomplish its tasks, but funny... no response...

I've been using SocialScope for BlackBerry -- this is a very good Twitter client for BB. http://www.socialscope.net/

I just received my first notice on UberTwitter to update and it certainly doesn't sound like it will be an option (keyword being "expire" in the threat). I'm not looking forward to the ads but I enjoy the app way too much to give it up. I understand that such a massive service could use some monetization efforts, if done correctly. I would willingly pay for an ad-free version.
  • Mike Serven · 3 months ago
Uber Twitter is going to quickly realize that ads piss people off more than a lack of features. Solution? Offer a feature stripped version(the version that is being disabled) along with the most recent version that has ads. At least give the user a choice. Forced upgrades will translate into forced defections.
  • rscohn · 3 months ago
I saw a friend tweeting about this this morning, but I have not yet been prompted to upgrade? If/when I do, sounds like it's still worth using with the ads. I mean, everything has ads... we learn to tune them out, unless they are those annoying ones that pop open right in the middle of what you're trying to read!
  • john · 3 months ago
yeah im uninstalling that thing. need an alternative!
  • Hercules K · 3 months ago
same, no ads on my mobile plz
  • Tiffany Dao · 3 months ago
i'm getting a new blkberry and i'm going to have to choose a new twitter app. sadness. ubertwitter, we've had a good run but i'm dumping you.
  • Josh Hofer · 3 months ago
Seriously, I don't even own a BB (girlfriend does and uses UberTwitter)... but people complain about this when it happens to popular iPhone apps. Get over it.

If you took the time to educate yourself about their latest update, you would see they did mention the ads in this new version AND that there is a paid version (Under $5) coming in a few weeks. Sure, it would have been better to launch the paid version at the same time as ads, but they have to test to make sure the ads display correctly and don't cause any issues.

Get off their asses about it, this is a normal business practice! Support indie developers and purchase the paid version when it launches. From the small amount of time I have screwed around with UberTwitter, it will be worth every penny!

All BB twitter apps suck, I won't even go into what I think of the BB Facebook app since as it would be NSFW. UberTwitter is just the best of the bad UberTwitter's GPS is a joke and I hate that it uploads pictures to some random site. Alas, it's the only one that does not crash my stupid BB. I paid for Tweetie on my iPhone (before I lost it) but I am not willing to pay for UberTwitter. Its not good enough to pay for.

    Re: Paid Version

I'd say they've considered it, but I'm not sure where they've implemented it. The list of updates states the following:

Integrated advertisements - Please note, the ads are there to support the freely distributable version of ÜberTwitter. Users that purchase ÜberTwitter will not have advertisement in their version.
  • Jonathan Blundell · 3 months ago
They've had ads on their photo pages and map pages previously. Plus supposedly the Twit-Vid integration was a part of the earlier releases - although I couldn't get it to work.
Seems to me - that the best bet would be to follow a Wordpress.com model or similar. Don't show ads to your committed users (in the app itself) but show ads to folks clicking on the photo/location/video pages. But everyone's gotta make money somehow I spose.
  • davereinhardt · 3 months ago
FWIW Viigo has always had ads at the top of the interface. I've not seen the new Ubertwitter interface so I don't know how intrusive this is in UberTwitter.
  • Andrew · 3 months ago
What a bunch of whiners. They provide a great app that you use and love, and they don't make you pay for it. So they put in ads to try and make ends meet, and you piss, moan and uninstall it? Unbelievable.
  • Ron · 3 months ago
From their site list of features in the new version:

Integrated advertisements - Please note, the ads are there to support the freely distributable version of ÜberTwitter. Users that purchase ÜberTwitter will not have advertisement in their version.

But I can't find where to buy it or how much it will cost to turn the ads off.
  • Cecilia · 3 months ago
Just ignore the ads...you'll soon not even see them anymore.
  • Cecilia · 3 months ago
At least the ads aren't flashing at you. I'll just ignore them and soon will probably not even notice them anymore.

From Ubertwitter upgrade notes: look for "integrated advertisements" line. notice "PAID VERSION"

Some of the cooler features include support for TwitVid and Bit.ly. Other updates to UberTwitter include:

    * Multiple Accounts - You can now configure multiple accounts, each with their own set of on-device preferences.
    * You can now BLOCK people!
    * Video Integration - We have partnered with TwitVid.com to offer you an outstanding video integration.
    * Goto user - You can now enter twitter users name and go directly to their timeline
    * URL Shortening - we’ve integrated with bit.ly so you can easily send those long URLs now and not bump up against the 140 limit
    * MUCH faster photo uploads, significantly improving the user experience.
    * Use of the internal GPS is now solidly supported with proper fallback to cell tower based location when GPS isn’t available.
    * Icon Caching If you have and SD card, we will cache avatar icons on the card, increasing the speed of timeline displays and reducing network traffic.
    * You can now select pictures and videos that have already been take and are on your device. The interface shows the most recent at the top and offers a preview so you can verify it is the picture/video you expected!
    * When composing a tweet you can now insert symbols from a large selection of commonly available characters such as smiley’s, hearts, etc.
    * Integrated advertisements - Please note, the ads are there to support the freely distributable version of ÜberTwitter. Users that purchase ÜberTwitter will not have advertisement in their version.
    * We’ve streamlined the friends and followers lists
    * You can now see both the number of friends, followers, and tweets sent when viewing the details of a tweet.
    * Replying to a DM from the timeline will now correctly send a DM and not a regular tweet
    * Fixed the bug in reply all where it would truncate some twitter user names
    * Added reply all to the menu when viewing a tweet

I had to download the new version since i had to replace my BB, the ads suck. I would def be willing to pay a fee to not see them.
  • Elad Kehat · 3 months ago
Get over it people. There's nothing wrong with putting ads on a free version of a product. If you don't like them then buy.
Next up: ads on tweetdeck, seesmic etc.
  • Jerry Silver · 3 months ago
The ads aren't a big deal. There's a single ad at the top of the list that scrolls off the screen, so it's relatively non-obtrusive. I think it's a small price to pay.
  • Hercules K · 3 months ago
well, boy does this suck. ads on mobile phones is a touchy subject.
  • Cracks · 3 months ago
Ubertwitter has a few other fatal flaws, as one Mr Robbie McEwen just found out: http://twitter.com/mcewenrobbie/status/3246122266
  • Patrick Britton · 3 months ago
Oh .. like.. all the adds on this page?
  • Steven Brady · 3 months ago
As quickly as it started, it's gone. UberTwitter responded by removing ads from the free version until a paid version is available.

Gotta hand it to them for actually listening to their users!
  • chris · 3 months ago
What a bunch of whiners. There's ads everywhere including mashable....if the hardworking developers need to monetize their free application by placing an advertisement...i say it's okay by me. If they have a paid version for $5 bucks...I'll pay for that too!
But lets face it...not everybody wants to pay $5 dollars. Many people would rather look for some kind of hacked version of it than to pay $5 dollars.

What am I missing? I downloaded UberTwitter today and I still get the ads. And yes, they are annoying. I actually don't mind the ads in FB, but they are distracting in UberTwitter. Seems like a PR release to just take the focus off of their ads even though they are still there. I would actually pay the $5 not to see them. Can anyone tell me if they are actually removed? Back to TwitterBerry for me until I can get rid of them or they can do them more tastefully.
