    I think I know why! because they are probably logged into a twitter app such as Twigget for Mac, Twitterific for Mac, Ubertwitter for Blackberry, Tweetie for Mac and iPhone ECT. If they don't update their new password in those applications, they will keep retrying to sign in and eventually lock your account due to "suspicious activity" AKA constantly trying to sign in with the wrong password. I may be wrong, but this is what happened to me when I changed my password about a month ago. :)

    actually, I did go into tweetdeck to try to change it in my tweetdeck preferences and I got failed attempt and locked out. no...this was a weird fluke.

    There doesn't appear to be any issues with a friend of mine who changed his password about an hour ago. He only uses TweetDeck when he's not updating his profile, so yeah, not sure what's going on.

    The problem now is different. I was suddenly unable to tweet, only DM, random times the past few days. May have been high traffic times; it is likely from Twitter changes that are boogering up any related tweeting app.'s. Generally when there is an app. issue like this, you can use Twitter. Changing passwords is a major pain and will definitely cause verification issues everywhere...unless you're lucky.

    I changed my username about 4 hours ago, and I haven't noticed anything. my tweetdeck did have some issues, but I got it sorted out in about 5 minutes.

    Changed my password 40 times in the last 10 days. Kept telling me "wrong password". Had to click the "forgot password" to get email then reset password to proceed. I thought someone hacked my account but now I see the Fail Whale was the culprit.

    Well seems like not a lot of people are affected but I am the rare ones. I recently just change my password and got log out a few times. Its a on and off thing but it do get on your nerves. At least I know Twitter is going to fix it. And I thought Twitter is going to BAN me! Phew!

    I had changed the password to my account a few days ago and have had problems ever since. Sometimes I need to use my new password, sometimes it recognizes the old password. Sometimes it won't let me in at all. Also, Twitter won't remember all my settings now either. My custom background will go away, as well as the icon. Things freeze up if I even attempt to use TweetDeck. I just started using TweetDeck the same day I changed my password, and thought it was a Tweek Deck issue.... thanks for sharing this information!

    I did open my inbox this morning and surprised to read an email from twitter team confirming and welcoming me. I went to bed very late lastnight just to set up my profile on twitter because I'm not that expert but at last i made it. I want a new name that has sound related to twitter word.

    Thanks for the tip. The closest thing that ever happened to me was when a new username had been used by someone else and abused leading external services to not allow me to join.

    There actually has been a problem like this for months already. I don't really get why Twitter is finally addressing the problem, right now. They should've looked up their GetSatisfaction which is filled with people complaining about this bug.

    I changed my password a few days ago after a random tweet that I had not posted. I could always log into twitter.com but I could not verify the new details in tweetdeck. This subsequently locked me out twitter.com for trying to many times!

    However both are fine and dandy this morning though!

    I changed my Twitter password, about 10 days ago due to alert stories about hackers & phishers, warning us TO change our passwords. So, I changed my password on the web version of Twitter, and since then I have been locked out of TweetDeck, which would not accept my new password. I finally figured the only way around it, after pulling some hair out, was to sign in as a "new user" account on the computer I am using. I have to sign in this way, & go thru hoops each and every time! But at least I'm able to access it, thankfully! Please let me know if this is the same issue, and when and how it is to be resolved. Thank you!

    uh yea. i changed my username then logged in to ubertwitter in my bb. it asked me to verify my account, so i click on the verify button. it says success but then i wasnt able to log in. so i tried again and this time i didnt click on the verify account button, just press the next button instead. it works and logged on successfully.

    Interesting.

    I decided to use tweetdeck (after months), tried to login, failed, went to the web to login and was locked out. The interesting part - I'm locked out via Firefox, Internet Explorer logs in and allows me to tweet.

    I haven't tried Chrome or the IE Tab function via Firefox, yet.

    It certainly affected me, and I was careful - I reset it in Tweetdeck, and deleted all my cookies etc - made sure Topify was NOT having access to twitter at that time etc. I would get locked out every few hours. And yes, I did notice it occurred more with Tweetdeck open. Once I got back in I left Tweetdeck off for a day and used the web - now I think I'm ok

    Please I have been down since Aug 28th - Glad to see Twitter is quick to respond @toddtilley - I have emailed them 7 times since then and still have heard nothing from them. Has anyone ever reached a live person at Twitter?

    Yes, this is happening to me now! Today I got a DM from two people saying I was in some video. I clicked on link, which went no where. Low and behold it was a phishing scam and I find out that to stop it I need to change my password, which I do. Then two hours later when I try to sign back on it won't accept my password, luckily I have an email from Twitter telling me to change it (from before) which I use again and manage to get in.

    Now it is a couple of hours later and I cannot get in and cannot change my password, so basically I am locked out! This has been a VERY sucky day in Twitterland for me! I am tired of all these problems! I certainly hope they clear this mess up quick.

    I got a lot of those phishing DMs today and then an email from "Twitter" telling me that my login had been disabled due to a security issue and to click through a link and change my password immediately.

    I checked on Twitter and couldn't find any indication that this email was for real (no other warnings on the site), so I didn't click through and haven't changed my details.

    Has anyone else got this email? Do you know if it's for real?

    Yes! Having changed my password about 7 or 8 times over the last couple of days I now wish I had read this article!

    My main problem has been Tweetdeck not recognising my new passwords although that has been a sporadic issue.

    It's certainly made me realise how much I rely on Twitter and Tweetdeck during my day.

    Hell yeah!!! Affected me. I STILL can't get into my twitter account. But it's been weeks, not recent. I signed up online and didn't put a phone number down. Now I can't verify a phone number so I can't get a password reset. I get the same stock answer from Twitter and no human being. Would LOVE to get my account back. What can I do?

    I had the same problem. I changed my password on my twitter account (not too long ago)and I couldn't log into my iPhone Tweety app. But, I FIXED this problem by changing my "changed" password back to the ORIGINAL password. I beleive that the 3rd party apps will only recognize your orignal/first password you made with Twitter. Now I'm able to log into Tweety app on my iPhone! It worked for me. HOPE this helps.

    I just had the same problem.     I'm still getting issues. I can get on one day then all of a sudden I get locked out of Twitter and Tweetdeck says I'm not Authorised again. Frustrating!

    I can't even find anything to suggest that Twitter are even working on a fix. They seem to be under the impression that they have resolved the issue.

    The most recent thing can find says:

    OCT
    18TH

    We are currently investigating a problem whereby some Twitter clients in widely scattered network locations are unable to connect to twitter.com.

    Update (Sunday 1:36pm PDT): Network should be back to normal now. We are investigating the cause of the outage and will update this with more information when we know more

    Any update on this? I had a friend whose account was hacked today so I thought it best to change my password. In doing so, I officially locked myself out of my account multiple times and cannot get my iphone app to accept the new one(s) either.

    I changed my username today and I'm having serious issues with Twitter now. I only get messages if people use my new username, but my home page still lists my old username as my current one. When I click on my "profile", it tells me the page does not exist, and sometimes when I try to type in my new username it tells me there is a technical issue and fails to show my profile. This may have been difficult to follow, but trust me, it's difficult for me to understand and deal with right now. Very frustrating. I hope they fix this technical glitch soon.

    Something is affecting me with respect to password changing. Right after that phishing scam yesterday. I changed my password.

    After a few hours of using third party apps with the *new* password. My account would revert to the old password. It's done this 3-4 times now.

    I've been trying to change my user name for a few weeks now, but after changing it, it would mysteriously change back. Twitter support has been non-responsive. I'm assuming this must be the issue. Also, I can no longer access the Twitter Facebook app. Maybe they are related.
