It is counting bio profiles.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

The flaw in that formula is that mentions don't necessarily mean drinkers. If I say beer sucks, I prefer martinis, does that count as a beer drinker? Statistics are great and very helpful, after all: "there are 3 kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

i've always wondered how Twitter pays for it's bandwidth anyway

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

Thanks for the clarification.... still don't get it from the post. It's the relative relationship that's being referenced.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

I certainly don't mind this information being posted but I agree with others in that the headline was misleading and the post itself unsatisfactory. What about a discussion on what this means for marketers? How this has changed over time? How mobile figures compare with web figures for twitter, other social networking sites, etc? This is little more than a press release. On the other hand, probably a good sign that your readers expect and demand more of you.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

wow! some people really have nothing to do but double check your stats! maybe it should have just read.."Male Twits".. but even then he would question your credibility;)

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

Yes, 35 is quite young to those of us who are over 40 lol.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

Check out http://www.twibeo.com it is a combination of the multimedia sharing you can find in FriendFeed and the simplicity of twitter.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

HUH?? I dont get this post at all.

Wait. 49% are over 35, yet you say that most users are young? (sounds split to me)... Now, as a 42 year old male Twitter user (handsome to my wife, most of the time), but so what? .... I am questioning the validity of your headline. Being over 35 is still young (contrary to what I thought when I was 25) .... but your statistic makes it sound like users are neither mainly young or old, but instead a good cross section of the population.

Now, if your stat showed 15% are over 35, I would say "YES" to your premise.... but I think your headline was created to get people to read an article that sort of has nothing to say. I read this whole short article twice and I have NO IDEA what the point of this post is really about.

Come on Mashable, I expect more from you.

***Now, I am sure that readers of my blog often scratch their heads and say "WTF?"... but I am just some old dude pontificating my opinions, thoughts and ideas (which are sometimes clouded by too much red wine). You should not get away with "mindless filler" if you have as many readers as you do!!!

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

There is some truth in handsome :D

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

I want MORE handsome male twitterers please. The "Young, Male & Handsome" got me to look! Then the "we made that part up" made me laugh! Let's say you are a social media expert for the wine industry council and you want to prove that Twitter is a great medium for wine marketing.

First you need to get a count of beer drinkers on Twitter with a Google search for intext:"bio * beer" site:twitter.com. That gives us 6,750 people. Next do a search for intext:"bio * wine" site:twitter.com, which yields 11,000.

Now you are ready to send out your own press release:
"Wine drinkers outnumber beer drinkers on Twitter by 2 to 1"

Apply this formula to suit any PR goal.

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

Love being the counter-trend!

Re: Twitter Users are Young, Male, Handsome (OK, We Made That Last Part Up)

Interesting. @problogger asked the age question on Twtpoll a couple of months ago and found similar results: http://twtpoll.com/r/w8el8s
