Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Updates Officially Become Tweets

  • jonathonhewitt · 4 months ago
Because its @Mashable! der-der-der! (I think you should not waste YOUR time reading it as its obvious that you don't like it Miss Devila2208)
  • swyx · 4 months ago
the pointlessness of this "news" overwhelms me..
  • Kimmy · 4 months ago
I don't like it, I'm one of the few users who continued to say "Twitter updates" this entire time. "Tweet" is phonetically unappealing to me and it sounds somewhat childish. I pray to god they don't change the update button, that would be awful.
  • devila2208 · 4 months ago
Really, you pray that they don't change the update button? Because I don't think you do. Either way it DOESN'T matter.
  • Bios Element · 4 months ago
Oh lookey, A troll! How nice.
  • devila2208 · 4 months ago
Oh sorry, I thought the comments were to "voice" your opinion, not to blindly agree with everyone else. Not everyone who disagrees with someone is a "troll".
  • Eduardo Resende · 4 months ago
I didn't know personal attacks count as "opinion".
  • sikku · 3 months ago
I second you on this comment..

Everyone says "tweet" so it's cool that Twitter has adopted it. Good strategy to always listen to the language your customers use and repeat it. It's called connecting.
  • FunDave · 4 months ago
    Tweeet!
  • Taintina Jakes · 4 months ago
Tweets? Skanks got "Skeet skeet skeets!"

    Power to the tweets!
  • Alex · 4 months ago
    go twitter!
    i called them tweets anyways.
this just lets me win my argument with a friend who said people follow other people "twats"
    tweet is so much better.
  • Dr Ross J Todd · 4 months ago
that's just tweet with me, too
  • stevefarnworth · 4 months ago
Honestly didn't realise until you mentioned it!
  • devila2208 · 4 months ago
I think this blog entry was a complete waste of time. I think there is too much analysis of Twitter. I think you are over-analyzing things, putting too much emphasis on the reasons behind this decision, when in reality it doesn't matter one bit what they call them. I think you are reading too much into Twitter and social media in general and trying to complicate them when there's nothing there to complicate. You people would write blogs and news stories and lists about the most absolutely asinine stuff and waste our time. Try doing a little work (research) and writing about something that actually matters.
  • Ben Parr · 4 months ago
I disagree - it's a huge indication of Twitter lingo gaining widespread credibility. It's a step towards "tweeting" being used just like "googling" as a verb in world culture. Language changes are significant to human psychology.
  • Steven Ray · 4 months ago
I agree with you. In 5 years [pretty much now] it will be common mainstream terminology, sort of like "email" maybe this will be Twitter's primary source of revenue, licensing out the usage of the term "tweet." I don't remember ever, Jaikuing anyone or even Powncing.
  • Nikolay Kolev · 4 months ago
Are you serious? I doubt people will still remember Twitter in 5 years.
  • Adam Haider · 4 months ago
I'd like to see whether it catches on in mainstream TV.

I remember observing the use of technology-based language while web2.0 was still progressing forwards. You would suddenly start hearing eBay and Google being mentioned as verbs, which is what I think helped this "sub-culture" phase form.

You could say, 'eBay-ing' would be synonymous with shopping, 'Google-ing' for searching and 'Tweet-ing' for messaging (An extension of texting)
  • Kimmy · 4 months ago
If you think it's a waste of time, why read it and then further waste your time to comment? I'd continue but that was absolutely ridiculous and a "complete waste of time", the humour in your comment should be pretty obvious without me saying anything else.
  • devila2208 · 4 months ago
I read it because once you start reading a 3 sentence article, it's rather easy to go ahead and finish it. It's not like I searched out this page and then read a 10 page thesis on the topic. I read a few lines on here and commented on my opinion, as asked by the writer.
  • Eduardo Resende · 4 months ago
Take it easy, he's not writing an essay here, that's just news.
  • Lance Lash · 4 months ago
I wonder when "Tweet" will be admitted into Merriam-Webster its only a matter of time now. :)
  • smcguinness · 4 months ago
So does that mean they are going to enforce the use of tweet or twt in apps? As much as I can understand the TM, I don't think it infringes on the Twitter brand as much as it would if someone used Twitter in their app name. I think the use of tweet is intuitive to the fact that it is a Twitter app and short of it being completely inappropriate and have a negative impact on Twitter, they should allow it.

Disclosure: I'm working on an app that uses "twt" in the name.
  • Tony Trainor · 4 months ago
Do Hoover still sue for the use of the verb hoover to clean the carpet? Probably not, but Twitter was wise to trademark "tweet" even though it is unlikely to be associated with anything other than Twitter. I can't imagine the planet "plurking" any time soon. The bottom line is that innovation will always endure in the public imagination, no matter how much the original concept is developed... just as nobody would ever dream of "dysoning" the floor.
  • Jj Soule' · 4 months ago
I just noticed it now too. Subtlety is under-rated. Im sure theres a lot of twttr jive that does not need to be played up to get more notoriety and/or usage. No body wants to admit to any sheep ancestory. Just saying :)
  • pinkfloyd · 4 months ago
Better late than being sorry. Tweet!

  • Kim · 4 months ago
It's a really good move from a marketing standpoint, especially considering that they trademarked the word. So it only makes sense for their brand. The word "Tweet" is Twitter specific. An "update" could be used with most any online tool, it's not as specific. But a "Tweet"... you can't use that term and it mean update your blog, update your Facebook, etc. So yeah, I complete disagree with the comment that this is a waste of time to talk about. But then again, I'm sort of a brand nerd.
  • Jessica Liu · 4 months ago
I agree, I think it's a great change making it more official and branded that you "tweet" your status updates. It's savy and makes a statement. When I first started "tweeting" I used to say I'm "twittering"... but I guess tweeting sounds better :)
  • unveiled · 4 months ago
This isn't something big but good thing they're trademarking the verb/noun "tweet." It's like how "Google" is an official verb. At least people won't be using other unofficial and inappropriate words like "twit." All these unofficial words give Twitter a bad name but I always like tweet.

They shouldn't change everything to the word Tweet though, I mean it makes sense to update your status, not tweet your status right? They should leave the update button alone, but use tweet in a lot of other places and still let the user get the hint of what it means.
  • Adam Haider · 4 months ago
I already knew they were going to do this, seemed like an organic thing to say considering the theme is birds.

This is normal for popular platforms.
It's the result of what happens when the platform ends up creating a sub-culture.
  • Mitzi Roberts · 4 months ago
I got it! I like it! It's b-ea-u-ti-ful! Nice tweeting with you.
  • Miguel · 4 months ago
Twitter should've done this a long time ago.
  • Gerry · 4 months ago
    very cool!

    What a Treat...i mean tweat!
  • Liz · 4 months ago
What is that? Is it the earth shaking? ; )
  • charcharade · 4 months ago
I think the fact that Twitter recognized wide usage of the word "tweet", and even changed an aspect of their website due to it says a lot about their respect for their users.

Also, arguing over whether this blog post was useless or that you find the word "tweet" phonetically unappealing is sort of ridiculous. It's just the internet, calm down c:
  • bhartzer · 4 months ago
Yeah, um, okay. So an update is a tweet now. Okay. Finally--they--get-it.
  • Glenn Babcock · 4 months ago
Tweets is what it should have been all along. Great new word.
  • Stew Brennand · 4 months ago
It's an obvious move and a good one. The branding alone is worth it's weight in gold.
  • moto62 · 4 months ago
ok, so i've never really said tweet very much.i'm not crazy about the term. i say i twittered; like i twittered or they twittered. tweet to me is like post-oprah. i'm pre-oprah.

You know you have power when you can introduce a word to the language.

Now get off of your buffetas and get back to work!

It makes sense to change it to what everyone is calling it. Its the people who started @ replies to other users too. Twitter right now is the epitome of social media because the users create the content and create the applications.

    Tweet away!
  • Wah · 4 months ago
yaye twitterlings "tweet" is official!! ooo "i got to tweet that" lol!
  • tweet4avon · 4 months ago
    It's all tweet for me!
  • Manz · 4 months ago
    Rockin' Robbin! Tweet....
  • Jen · 4 months ago
Anyone who thinks Twitter is going to fade away in five years has another thing coming. Tweeting is as socially significant as Googling. If you believe one is important, the other is. I think Twitter - and blogs analyzing Twitter - are cool.
  • Tom · 4 months ago
    sweet!
  • Cory W. Aaron-Syas · 4 months ago
Wait, let me "tweet" this before we leave! - sounds like the future, its good with me!

lol, I wonder if Tom from Myspace Tweets?
  • Christie lim · 4 months ago
Interesting! I didn't even notice it til now. : )
  • joshishollywood · 4 months ago
I've always thought that the term "tweets" makes an already difficult-to-defend medium of social networking sound even stupider. Give me something to work with, Twitter!
  • Your Name* · 4 months ago
That is a good ideal to call them tweets. We all call them tweets. It sounds better than updates.

  • Kennon Fort · 4 months ago
It makes sense for Twitter to do this! It's consistent! It's Tweet! Here we go Twitter Tweeters!
  • Kelly Ebel · 4 months ago
Yes, that's great news! "Tweets" are part of the Twitter language!
  • JDEvolutionist · 4 months ago
I like change - yes updates are tweets. BUT what's this about a trade mark. Someone should take out a class action on behalf of birds! This is absurd the whole concept of twitter must have been based on the idea of tweeting NOT the other way around. Mark you could say the same about windows!!
  • Richard Bramer · 4 months ago
Think its a good move. I can already see teachers going over the verb 'to tweet' in english/grammer classes.

BingTweets already used that label... http://lab.77agency.com/search-engine-marketing...
  • Lee Utterback · 4 months ago
    I just noticed that.
  • birdietwig · 4 months ago
Does it really matter...although "tweets" sounds much, much better than updates.
  • Joe Peach · 4 months ago
surely this must be a move in preparation for a 'retweet' button on the twitter website?
  • delbertino · 4 months ago
    Looking out for the tweeters; very good; thanx; tweeterific; tweetnanimous; tweetnarly;tweetsational; tweetastic; tweetpendous;
  • valderama · 4 months ago
    It couldn't get more idiotic?
  • samj · 3 months ago
Thanks for noticing and documenting this guys - it may well end up being the smoking gun that keeps "tweet" in the public lexicon where it belongs.
