Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter to Facebook: 5 Ways to Post to Both

  • Jerry · 6 months ago
There is also a Facebook App called Selective Twitter Status. Just add the app to your Facebook and when you Twitter add the hashtag #fb to the entry and it will update your Facebook status.
  • Jennifer Van Grove · 6 months ago
Yep that's listed in the post :)
  • Chris Dessi · 6 months ago
Great post, but we should also add the caveat that if you're "really" into Twitter and you start to pick up the lingo etc, your friends on Facebook may think you're losing your Re-Tweetin' mind. I've experienced a few friends that have functionality that post to both, and truly if you're not on Twitter and you read the update it reads like drivel...think "RT@cdessi this is a gr8t article http://bit.ly/nMFUu" SAY WHAT? ....lol...just sayin' don't say I didn't warn you.
  • Michael Bauser · 6 months ago
That's where using a third-party service like Ping.fm (where you actually send the update through Ping, which relays it to 2 or more other services) is really useful. If you think an update makes sense on both Twitter & Facebook, send it to Ping. If you think the update only makes sense on Twitter, send it directly to Twitter (or use Ping's @commands to selectively post).

We have been working on a simple Firefox add-on for just that purpose (been featured on mashable before)

Friendbar allows you to post to both fb and twitter with one click from a browser toolbar.

Check it out, let us know how to make it better.

I personally was using the Facebook Twitter app, bit found annoying having each and every update in both places. Now I use Yahoo Mobile and with one update it can appear in all my social networks ( including MySpace and others).
If want to update a specific account, then can do it individually.
  • Claudio Martins · 6 months ago
It's just me or anyone else thinks that updating both service with the VERY SAME status message is horrible?

Normally you would have the same people on both, or at least, some of them. It just sucks reading the very same thing over and over on both services.

I use TweetDeck that allows me to check the messages on both sites, so, you can imagine how horrible it is for me.
  • Joshua · 6 months ago
Switchabit is another good option, and it also allows cross-posting in the reverse direction as well as to blogs, Flickr, jaiku, tumblr, or any RSS-enabled feeds. I really find it super-helpful! http://www.switchabit.com
  • Bob Garon · 6 months ago
Ok Twitter to Facebook is fine, but what about Facebook to Twitter? I would rather have Facebook update my twitter and if the characters go over 140 then it will split it into more than one tweet.

Any way to do that? If so I'm allllllllllllllllllll in! :)

    Thanks
  • Brandi · 6 months ago
I've not seen something like that yet, if you run across it...let me know.

Seriously: Considering I found this post via my FriendFeed, I am surprised you did not mention FF's option to post to both Twitter and FB.
  • jyoseph · 6 months ago
I personally find it annoying as hell when I'm friends with someone on twitter & facebook and see the same updates (verbatim) on both services, for every single update. I've just been removing friends from facebook for this reason. Anyone else find this?

Most annoying part is seeing RT and @'ing on facebook.

I have a great idea, don't do that. mmkaythxbai.
  • geoffreygordon · 6 months ago
I am not sure it is a good idea to combine the two,not all face book fans are twitter fans and vice verso, I used to update both and it confused all my face book followers, say whats twitter. Needless to say some people are die hard twitter fans and some are die hard face book fans, and some are both, social media marketing is quite interesting.

I've tried using TweetDeck for my FB updates. I've encountered problems with the current version of TD (for the PC) and have to use an older version just to have it up and running (kinda). Right now it's not even updating my followers or allowing me to put followers into groups I've created. I do, however, like the convenience of being able to create a tiny url just below my update. Very convenient.

So, with relish I clicked on this article and read through each app possibility looking for one that would meet my needs (and avoid the Twitter to FB translation annoyances described in other comments.) Involver seemed to be just the right fix. 1-2-3 and I can install a Twitter Tab on my FB page for those who wish to access it can. However, it wasn't quite so 1-2-3 and Involver seemed to imply. First try on the install and Involver was creating a completely new FB account for me. Stop. I already have an FB account. Shouldn't it recognize this? Stop. Start all over and try again. Now I get the message, "Twitter for Pages. The developer of this application does not currently allow it to be added."

    What gives?
  • technogran · 6 months ago
You missed out Flock which now allows you to post from the peoples sidebar to both twitter and facebook, or you can choose to just update to twitter.
  • Peter Obendorfer · 6 months ago
Nice article but i would add the "Selective Twitter App" for Facebook, too.
It posts only selected Tweets to Facebook marked with hashtag #fb

I personally prefer using Ping.fm simply because I can add it to my gtalk and then I can simply update all my statuses at once by typing into a chat window :)

Excellent article! I found some apps listed here that we currently do not have listed at Twitdom.com - The Twitter Applications Database. I'll add them shortly.

    Great post Jennifer,
Thanks so much for picking PeopleBrowsr for your list.
As you show in your screen grab, PeopleBrowsr can update Twitter, facebook, FriendFeed Identi.ca, and Ping.fm (and through Ping.fm a lot more netoworks).
We love Mashable and your feedback.
Thanks so much for your support.
    Best,
    Priscilla

the best way to do that, and add photos on twitpic, update friendfeed, and many more is by using tarpipe! you just configure whatever you want to do, and by sending a simple mail, for instance, it updates twitter, facebook and lots of other social services. the best thing about it is that you control whatever you want to do (like using the title to update twitter, the body text to post on your blog, a picture that goes into twitpic and a short url to it on twitter, etc.)
  • Brandi · 6 months ago
there is also the new Firefox App that allows you to post to Twitter from your address bar. Add that to the automatic feed into facebook, and you can update your status on two different pages without ever having to load either page.

I don't really like it when people connect their accounts. I can understand using a desktop client or something like it and posting the same status updates on a selective basis - but even then you must be careful. Twitter and Facebook are nothing alike and should remain apart.

See more of my opinion and the reasons behind it here - http://www.techsplosive.com/2009/05/separation-...

Not too sure about the utility of most of this. I had my twitter and FB statuses linked for a long time and got complaints from FB friends of me dominating their newsfeeds. Since FB doesn't let you filter type of status message update yet a blanket twitter/FB updater ends up alienating FB friends. I blogged on this and specific Facebook recommendations a short while back at http://digg.com/u147Mj

Using Twitter clients is probably a better idea as it allows one to be selective. You didn't mention that Seesmic has the FB integration too. They were actually the first to get this.
  • John Beckley · 6 months ago
You can also use Streamy.com to manage your social media updates, I've only just started using it but it does make sense to have it all in one spot.
  • John - TechListReport.com · 6 months ago
I agree with pwestbro. I find myself using FriendFeed a lot more than Twitter. FriendFeed does a great job of duel posting. Also, if I want to post to Twitter, it will also post to FriendFeed and Facebook.

Thanks for the list, Jennifer. I have posted a link on my site.

Do you know if there is a way to post in twitter + a fan page (not profile).
    Thanks

try http://www.mosio.com -- not only can you sync both your twitter & facebook accounts for status updates, you can also ask mosio questions and have them answered by your friends in addition to other mosio members.
  • Sheryl Tuttle · 6 months ago
Does Seesmic have plans to add this functionality? I like TweetDeck in that I can just check the box by Facebook or Twitter or both and it will update. With Seesmic it appears to be either or, but not both simultaneously. I'm back & forth on which to use for managing Twitter, TweetDeck or Seesmic.
  • R. Richard Hobbs · 6 months ago
you can also update ur links by specifying ur public Twitter feed as ur blog feed - that is, (seemingly) when FB isnt sabotaging anything Twitter you may be trying to bring into FB or when Twitter's feed isnt somehow horked and / or FB isn't horking it
  • Dennis Power · 6 months ago
How about the easiest way. Posterous.com.
  • Kyla · 6 months ago
For Android users, I recommend Statusinator - mostly a FB app but you can select an option that lets you selectively re-tweet each FB update. I like that it goes FB -> Twitter and not the other way round, so you don't end up with RT's and @replies on FB - annoying!!
  • Cameron Tedford · 6 months ago
You can also use Voice on the Go to update your Twitter status by voice....check out the product www.voiceonthego.com/video

CrazyMenu iphone app auto generates contextual tweets to minimize typing that then can be posted to both facebook and twitter :)
  • clintus · 6 months ago
I do not want to see the same damn Twitter updates that I see on Twitter when I log into Facebook. I understand the concept but it pretty much eliminates the use of the status updates in facebook.
  • Daniel Versola · 6 months ago
can you post updates via twitter to a fan page?
  • MicahW29 · 6 months ago
iPhone and iPod Touch users may also want to check out the Zensify app...it also allows you to update Facebook and Twitter status in one posting. Highly recommend, and right now, its free!

Great article about Twitter-Facebook integration! I'm already using some of the tools mentioned here.
  • Your Name Paul Sanchez · 6 months ago
If there was away to omit the @ messages from going to facebook I would post to both. Is there a service that just omits the @ messages when posting to facebook? I just answered my question. http://tweetpo.st which was mentioned also Ignore @replies and does not send them to facebook! Great post Jennifer!

Be AWARE: medinawebmarketing.com, I paid $100.00 to purchase a web site from the guy why built the site, he's a web designer, or so he says. After meeting with him and talking with him on the phone, he sounded like a pretty nice guy. I informed him that I was not to savvy when it comes to web site building and asked if he be interested in helping me expand the site. He aggreeded. The site is a tea sight. The purchases are made locally and are to be resold on the web. It took me a few weeks to finally get hold of him again to start showing me how to get into certain thing about the site. Then to get him to take me to the pace to purchase, it took me 4 - 4 1/2 weeks to get him to do that. Then we were suppose to get together again to finalize the site. He stalled me and finally told me to give him a couple of weeks for about June 4th or 5th and that he'd be available on Thur. 6-18-09 and we'd finish set up. I started calling and e-mailing him on Tues. 6-16-09 to no avail. He has not asnwered my calls or e-mail, just as he had done in the past when I tried getting hold of him.
Anyone looking to build a web site and is like me doesn't have much of a clue, DO NOT and repeat DO NOT get involved with Brian Cherry of medinawebmarketing.com, he put the screws to you. He'll make promises and not keep them, he'll lead you on, and leave you hanging.

I just want a simple link from my facebook fan page to my twitter account. Just like this fan page has: http://www.facebook.com/PureYogaOfficial. I’m having trouble figuring out how to do this because all of the apps that I’m finding are designed to add status updates or integrate twitter in other ways which is more than I want.

Does anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks!
  • thatgirlblogs · 5 months ago
    TweetDeck!
  • Oliver · 4 months ago
To my knowledge, none of these apps allow you to post to Facebook Pages (also sometimes called Facebook Fan Pages). I built a small service so you can do that, too. (See my link.)
  • Nicholas · 4 months ago
I am using twitter, facebook, and even myspace quite often at my job managing the social media platforms, and I keep running into the issue that my organization's facebook page is a fan page. Do any of the Twitter clients work in conjunction with fan pages? I can't get TweetDeck to work with the facebook fan page, and I haven't heard anything from TweetDeck support. With twitter for facebook pages, I don't even have the option to post tweets...just view them, so that's out of the picture, too. Any advice for integrating my organization's twitter account with its facebook fan page?
  • Alyssa · 4 months ago
I am having a similar problem - I have a group page on FB for my business and want to integrate that with my twitter updates. I want to keep my personal FB page separate. I'm sure someone is working on something to handle this - keep me posted if anyone finds it! Thanks.
  • freereminder · 4 months ago
I was super excited to see ping.fm integration when I was told about your site today.
I do a lot more through Ping.fm than I do through twitter, so I think possibly adding similar functionality (such as @l = location) or possibly having a hoot suite ability that allows the ability to only tie to a Ping.fm account instead of Twitter and Ping.fm (Kind of a one or the other or both idea) would be really awesome. I have been looking for something that could specifically be used for scheduled posting to Ping.fm. You guys rock though and awesome job!

I was hoping to add the Twitter button to our Jobs4Autism organization page on Facebook. I noticed Involver allowed two free apps, but when I tried to install it, I just got a message saying the administrator or something wouldn't allow its use at this time. Is this appl. still being developed?

I set up the Twitter app on Facebook a while ago, so when I post a status to Twitter, it automatically posts on Facebook. I cannot find where to change that setting. When I got to the Twitter app, and I click on Settings, I end up on the Twitter settings page. Any help? Perhaps delete the app and start over?
  • Brad F. · 2 months ago
I would just delete it. I don't think it has any settings from the way this article reads. You probably want the selective Twitter app that requires the #fb tag. That seems to be the most popular one anyway.
