Mashable - The Social Media Guide: TWITTER TAKEOVER: Twitter Overwhelms Facebook Feeds

  • Mandi Engram · 4 months ago
If Twitter has suddenly taken over your Facebook status, you can make it stop by blocking the Twitter Facebook application:

Thanks for the tip, Mandi! :)
  • NicolasRoberge · 4 months ago
I noticed that my dormant FriendFeed Facebook App came alive around that time. I removed it completely. It didn't have the rights to post to my wall without my permission. It looks like a Facebook privacy bug.
  • Dennis Jernberg · 4 months ago
Funny, it seems my tweets have been taking over my FB wall today...
  • fb prob · 4 months ago
FB is "refactoring" their app platform. Better, faster, stronger :D http://developers.facebook.com/news.php?blog=1&...

I think "status update" is allowed now to all apps without prompt. It can be either friendfeed or twitter.

  • jackiemacd · 4 months ago
I am SO not happy about that. It makes me want to avoid Twitter until it's done.
  • paperstainer · 4 months ago
Thanks for the quick update. I was shocked to see my tweets on FB this morning and wondered what happened.

On FB, my acct settings are turned OFF to twitter and yet all twitters still post to FB. Any other suggestions?
  • Melody Lam · 4 months ago
You'll need to block/remove the app. I did the same thing as you did and it still posted my test tweet to my facebook.
  • Jo9ty · 4 months ago
Thanks for the tip, Mandi. Solved the Twitter takeover of FB for me :-)
  • Jon Kragh · 4 months ago
Yup - this happened to me just about a half an hour ago. My tweets are usually technical, so my less technical Facebook friends were confused.
  • Lorne Pike · 4 months ago
I've had my last three tweets go to my Facebook account, despite my privacy settings supposedly blocking it from happening. Thanks for the explanation of what was happening; hopefully it will be corrected very soon.
  • Jules · 4 months ago
I removed tweetdeck and twitter from my apps. in settings on Facebook, and that seemed to resolve the problem so far for me.
  • lenje · 4 months ago
Yeap, that's what I did too, and it seemed like the workable one.
  • Julia · 4 months ago
Who came up with this idea? Was it a glitch or intentional? Lame, Twitter FB app. Real lame.
  • Supriya Wronkiewicz · 4 months ago
I blocked the Twitter app on my facebook and that seemed to help. I try to keep the two separate anyhow.
  • Rae · 4 months ago
    This is some bullshit #twitbook
  • theharmonyguy · 4 months ago
BEFORE you uninstall any apps, check "Edit Applications," show "Granted Additional Permissions," and please report anything amiss to @theharmonyguy on Twitter - thanks!
  • Simone Laberinto · 4 months ago
But isn't there a Selective Twitter application on Facebook, that's what I have been doing for quite sometime now so that my Facebook status doesnt need to be updated everytime I tweet.
  • luizfilipecm · 4 months ago
Facebook should stop trying to be more like Twitter. Facebook is good as it is! And Twitter is much better as being Twitter.
  • cheeky_geeky · 4 months ago
None of this is surprising for these kinds of companies. I speak frequently to government and other audiences interested in Web 2.0 technologies. One thing I tell them all, and Web 2.0 companies like Twitter and Facebook should take this to heart, it: DO NOT TRUST THESE COMPANIES. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR BUSINESS. THEY WILL CHANGE THINGS WITHOUT TELLING YOU. KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN USING THESE SITES.
  • benjaminjtaylor · 4 months ago
Well put! Caps appropriate. And it's not just web 2.0 companies. We just went through this last week with Amazon.
  • Arianna Skye · 4 months ago
THis actually happened to me a few weeks back. I was on Tweetdeck and didn't realize both Facebook and Twitter were check boxed, so everything i tweeted ended up on my Facebook updates. Holy cow! I had a lot of stuff to delete. LOL
  • Denis · 4 months ago
This is happening with applications such as Spymaster as well. I have permissions set not to post anything, and yet it still does. Definitely a Facebook bug.
  • aphotoassistant · 4 months ago
Tweetdeck is posting to my facebook and no matter what settings I check or uncheck, it still posts from tweetdeck to facebook.
  • Mary Motz · 4 months ago
Yep - me too... FriendFeed is posting to Facebook. Thats not a biggie as Twitter is fed to FB anyway - but a pain to see the same tweet twice. Gotta wonder how they can lose control of apps like that.
  • Dennis Jernberg · 4 months ago
It would have to be a Facebook bug. I'm using Flock with the "Broadcast to Facebook" option checked.
  • Heather Armstrong · 4 months ago
I think it must be happening with other applications too. Apps like Mafia Wars are suddenly posting stories to my wall even though I have specifically restricted such postings in the application's privacy settings.

And oddly enough, Selective Twitter Status (which allows you to filter which Tweets go to FB by using the hashtag #fb at the end of those tweets) seems to be affected in the opposite manner: it hasn't posted any of my #fb tweets today.

I think that there are some things to learn from this whole scenario (I actually just wrote up a really quick blog post about it). We have to recognize that these companies can make mistakes, just like the rest of us, but what is perhaps more important is that we can also use this to examine how we interact with the many social media platforms we use, and how they interact with each other. After all, we don't necessarily want everything on Twitter to be on Facebook (or vice versa), yet many people still install these apps.

Not that there is anything wrong with this. I just think that it's interesting to consider how we try to integrate two different platforms that use two different forms of communication and don't necessarily interact in the same space - consider what Facebook and Twitter were built from. One a virtual version of the college facebook, the other a digital version of the text message.

  • regnard · 4 months ago
That explains it... I removed the Twitter app in Facebook and that seemed to do the trick.

Anyone think this might be an effort by Facebook to undermine Twitter and Friendfeed in order to provoke the many Twitter haters on Facebook?
  • Fireman17 · 4 months ago
I have had this problem today.. I was thinking it was just me... Hope they fix this issue fast..
  • Donna · 4 months ago
So, I saw my tweets on Facebook. Of course I thought I did something silly by accident with Tweet Deck. Shouldn't have second guessed myself! At any rate, I deleted FB from Tweet Deck. But then, I saw others were having probs and their updates were made from 'web' so I realized it wasn't Tweet Deck. Sure enough, I went back to FB and saw more tweets. Crazy. Can't wait to see what's causing this. I don't like the two links whatsover because both serve different purposes for me.
  • drewolanoff · 4 months ago
    ack!
  • Vicky · 4 months ago
I was SMART not to link up my facebook and twitter! I keep them separate. Facebook is VERY slow tonight. I gave up on it and went to tweetdeck for some twitter chats.
  • DarrenScottMonroe · 4 months ago
I just removed it to hell with that!
  • Rosemary · 4 months ago
when i deleted the twitter update on FB, i was shown "Don't allow Twitter to publish without asking me" I gladly checked the box.
  • Kyle Sellers · 4 months ago
I did too, but it continued to post my tweets. I had to remove the apps entirely. I won't be adding any more Facebook apps, thank you very much!
  • redwall_hp · 4 months ago
That's a dumb attitude. "Well, this pirated copy of Photoshop had a trojan in it. I'm not going to install any software on my computer anymore..."
  • Kyle Sellers · 4 months ago
Official apps set to NOT auto update, both simultaneously begin updating--oh, and these two apps both happen to be competitors of Facebook in this space.

I think it is completely reasonable to link any more of my services to Facebook, whether this was accidental or not. If I wanted all of that posted to Facebook, I would have posted it to Facebook in the first place.

I have a hard time believing this was just a mistake. If so, why did it affect both Twitter and Friendfeed, but none of the other services that can update your status remotely? Just the two big ones? Hmmm...
  • Kyle Sellers · 4 months ago
This is crap. It started 1 hour 27 minutes ago for me. I specifically keep my accounts separate so I don't overwhelm my family with my political rantings. I have never been so furious with a web service before. I understand a service failing, but this seems both sinister and dishonest.
  • Dennis Jernberg · 4 months ago
So it IS a Facebook bug! Let's hope they fix it soon...
  • Conrad Panganiban · 4 months ago
Also seems to be working with tweets made with Seesmic Desktop. Boo! Thanks for the tip about disabling Twitter in FB.
  • Shawn · 4 months ago
I checked out my Facebook and it did have an update from Twitter, but it was an update I never made anywhere. It was some nonsense about barbecue sauce, that was kind of strange. It does not show in my twitter updates on twitter or in Seesmic desktop.
  • dena · 4 months ago
This is really annoying. Glad to know it's not just me... bummer that I spent 15 minutes checking all my settings on FB, Twitter, TweetDeck, Twitterfon, etc.
  • konstantin · 4 months ago
    i hate twitter anyway :))

Thanks Chris. That seemed to do the trick!
  • HerTech · 4 months ago
I am a believer! I shall never doubt you again! It actually just happened to me. I was wondering why I had notifications when I hadn't posted anything [directly] on FB, but I later saw that they were commenting on my last Tweet. Therefore, I deleted the Twitter app from my FB profile and hopefully that'll solve the problem. Doesn't matter... I'm out of tweets tonight anway! :~|
  • Hugh Isaacs II · 4 months ago
Facebook is working on the platform, that's all.
  • Ryan Willis · 4 months ago
    That's awesome. Twitter Power! (;
  • aeontriad · 4 months ago
mine has been that way for a while...on purpose.
  • hedkandigirl · 4 months ago
i use a facebook application called 'Selective Twitter Status'. i can choose which tweet i want to be posted on my facebook status update by simply adding '#fb' at the end of my tweet. i don't think tweets get fed automatically to your facebook unless you activated a facebook twitter application
  • aeontriad · 4 months ago
mine has been that way for a while...on purpose.
  • RobC · 4 months ago
Use Selective Twitter on Facebook. Much better than the official Twitter app on FB. http://apps.facebook.com/selectivetwitter/ Been using it for a few months - works like a charm.
  • Gloria · 4 months ago
Easy fix - block the Twitter application on FB.
  • chlankboot · 4 months ago
humm, that's not happening to me either, could it be geo-localized? if it happens i would be really bad
  • Dustin Diaz · 4 months ago
Ok, so I was actually, laughing a little :)
  • twilight_lover025 · 4 months ago
its not updating mine....maybe she actually updated it her self...maybe? if it starts on mine im deleting my twitter
  • Bee · 4 months ago
    - you only get them posted to your wall if you request it too via the twitter application on facebook. =/
  • ervinter · 4 months ago
Finally I remove twitter application from my fb to avoid auto publish my twitter feed.
  • Melba Johnson · 4 months ago
you can change your facebook settings though.just do not tick the box asking for special permissions.
  • Kylie · 4 months ago
Escaped by changing the email account in Twitter. YAY!
  • Dennis Jernberg · 4 months ago
Looks like FB may be fixing the problem already. I used Flock to tweet, with "Broadcast to Facebook" checked again, and, lo and behold, it didn't update my status like it did earlier today. And I didn't uninstall the Twitter app, either.
  • Matthew Gibbons · 4 months ago
This seems to be happening with any application that post to the users status. If you click to delete a status, there is an option to disable future status updates from that app. Use that as a temporary fix until Facebook works things out on their end.

Actually I'm fine with twitter updating my facebook status. Saves me time and I get to connect with both my facebook and twitter friends at the same time. I guess the problem only comes in when it's something I specifically want only my twitter friends to know? But they are ok with not publish twitter replies so I'm fine there as well.
  • Joe Dawson · 4 months ago
Doesn't appeear to be a problem here as I'm not experiencing this (UK)
  • Yorgo Nestoridis · 4 months ago
The bug is one issue, the other is the Guru Tip to hook the accounts together via RSS and may be facebooks desire to get twitterers back to stick around on facebook - at any price. Bugs often are not bugs...

This is definitely a Facebook problem.

All Twitter or any app can do is say, "Hey Facebook post this message if the user wants it". It's up to Facebook to make sure that it only posts the message if the user wants it.

The Facebook system must be ignoring the user setting around Twitter messages. Definitely not good for Facebook.
  • Andrew Willems · 4 months ago
Would this be the problem? I got this message a couple times yesterday on my Twitter account.

    tkellenaers: My friend made this C00L SITE to GET M0RE TW1TTER FOLL0WERS - http://alturl.com/7hoz - V1Ps get T0NS every day

Also got this post Monday, july 27th:
