Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Revamps Following and Followers Pages

  • Steve Hall · 5 months ago
But a nice addition would be a much needed search feature so you can search for people within your followers or those you are following. Currently, you have to go page after page after page to get to a person...if you can't remember their screen name or other info.
  • themaria · 5 months ago
I am with you Steve. I think a search functionality within your followers and followees is long overdue. As well as a search function in direct messages, @ replies directed to you, as well as within your own tweets.
  • alissaj · 5 months ago
Search function for followers list would be SUPER! I was actually surprised to find I didn't have that capability. seems like a no brainer to me.
  • allie · 5 months ago
agree with you mr. hall. crabs and whales. ;)
  • Yair Olmert · 5 months ago
    I agree
  • Roxy · 5 months ago
Still no insta-spam button. I want a faster way to get rid of those porn idiots than an @ message directed to @spam
  • Rclarke · 5 months ago
Yes this is more informative when browsing - although I am missing the bio of the person you used to get when you hovver over their name. From what I see you now have to actually click on the user, go into thier profile, read bio, then decide whether to follow or not. I prefer just to hover to get the info. Unless I am missing something?
Also WHEN is the search feature coming????!!!!
  • Terry · 5 months ago
On Twitter Following/Follower pages you can no longer view the followers bio with a hover over their name. Am I missing something? This was quick and easy way to decide who to follow or not. Now it seems you have to click their name. What gives?
  • virtualpartner · 5 months ago
I totally agree...I was looking for it and the hover is gone!!! I want it back:)!!! The hover helped me decide if I wanted to engage more without leaving the "followers" stream.
  • Friedrich Kuhlau · 5 months ago
It's a big #twitterfail I'm afraid. You can't rid your followers list of porn spammers without first protecting your updates. BIG mistake, Twitter ...
  • silvergrrl · 5 months ago
I'm with you. Plus it's not obvious that's how to do it, someone had to tell me & I am sharing with others. :-(((
  • FireMom · 5 months ago
Going to their physical page, unblocking if you have already blocked and then reblocking SOMETIMES removes them from your list. Not every time. It just took six times to get one removed from my list. For Pete's sake. I have PAGES of followers right now that say "blocked" next to their name... and there they sit. Crowding my pages.
  • Friedrich Kuhlau · 5 months ago
I feel your pain. I'm on tweet strike until this gets resolved - as @stop (one of Twitter's top guys) has told me it will be.
  • mager · 5 months ago
  • Ohdoctah · 5 months ago
lmao lol Doesnt the link you posted say the same thing... now thats just silly. or trolling or whatever they call it!
  • Sara Reffler · 5 months ago
This is a great update! Twitter did a brilliant job with the new interface, and sleek design!
    #twitterwin?
  • HannaBec · 5 months ago
I'm noticing that the people I block remain on my Followers list with the options to unblock them. I don't want them there but can't find a method to completely remove them. They just clutter up the list. But I appreciate the continued improvements.
  • silvergrrl · 5 months ago
Here's how to get rid of those nasty followers:
    1) Go to settings, and click "Protect my updates", then click "Save"
    2) Go to your list of followers, and now one of your choices in the little Tool dropdown is"remove". This will get rid of that follower.
    3) When you're done, go back & unprotect your updates.
  • deb · 3 months ago
this is annoying that this is the only way to clean up your followers, why cant "remove" always be an option??
  • virtualpartner · 5 months ago
I had to go the their profile to block them and confirm the block. It was the only way to remove them completely. Didn't work from the new "followers" interface.
    Hope this helps.
    @virtualpartner
  • Yuki Hoang · 5 months ago
that's Twitter for ya. Always updating! This makes finding new people to follow a lot more easier. Great topic @mashable!
  • seanbailey · 5 months ago
I'd find it more useful if they made people make a bio when they signed up for Twitter. They can show that there instead of the last tweet.

Also, the people I've been blocking the last little while, aren't disappearing from my followers. Hopefully it's attributable to this redesign and I'll see my numbers go back to normal.
  • Hugh Briss · 5 months ago
That's the part I don't understand. They added the latest tweet which is helpful for vetting but removed the bio popup which is probably more valuable than seeing the latest tweet. Why can't they have both?
  • Richard Bellemare · 5 months ago
I agree… For me the bio is more important than the last tweet and/or the location. At least in the previous implementation you could bring your mouse pointer above the link and see the full bio. Unless I am missing something now the only way to get to the bio is to actually “open” the link which is way more time consuming.
  • kellek1974 · 5 months ago
How do I get rid of the followers I blocked? They used to drop off up until a couple of weeks ago, and they are still there after the revamp! It is not accurate count. I want QUALITY people that want to read my tweets, not tons of follow spam. I don't want to protect updates either. Follow spammers driving me nuts though.
  • silvergrrl · 5 months ago
Protect, get rid of them, then unprotect. A pain but it works.
  • James · 5 months ago
    new twitter-like site allows pictures/videos http://www.twibeo.com
  • lavrusik · 5 months ago
Love this new clean update. Maybe Twitter will eventually catch up with all the third-party app options making them obsolete. Hmmm. Probably not.
  • Ewen Wallace · 5 months ago
Very nice update but I'd really like the option to remove followers I've blocked so I don't have to keep seeing their bare arses.
  • silvergrrl · 5 months ago

  • JPK69 · 5 months ago
    Nice. Very nice!
  • jmacofearth · 5 months ago
And how about letting us decide how many follower(ees) to show per page? Managing tweeps by the handfull (20 per page) is dumb and hard. This is an improvement. But I'd settle for less fail whale and more users per page, thank you very much.
  • Erin Blaskie · 5 months ago
I also totally broke this an hour ago... Where's the love Mashable? ;)

I like the change too. Think it helps to see the quality / content of the people you are following before you click "follow".
  • 2LiveAndFly · 5 months ago
Looks great!!! I really like the change...

Taking a principled stance over Twitter's failure to allow unprotected accounts to remove spammers: http://musurl.com/Svhqi
  • @hlooman · 5 months ago
The only thing I don't like about the revamp is the fact that I can't see in my list of ppl I follow who follows me back. In the old situation I looked at the DM option but that is now hidden in the dropdown menu...
In the list of followers I see a green checkmark if I follow them back. Hope they make the pages consistent by adding these checkmarks on both...

Or I may have overlooked the simple way to see if someone follows back... ?

    Just my $0.02
  • zeaz · 5 months ago
i don't like the changes in following pages ! Cuase now i need to click buttons everytime i wanna to check who is following back who is not . Sigh... It's not convenient...
  • Terry · 5 months ago
So I'm not crazy. Seems a lot of people did not know of this now "old" hover feature. Hope it is oversight and they bring it back.
  • garylapointe · 5 months ago
But I still can't tell by looking at someone else's page if they are following me :(

How hard can that be to implement? Don't they (still) have to be following me for me to DM them? They need to make it easier...
  • Todd Michael Greene · 5 months ago
If you use FireFox there is a Greasemonkey script developed by @troynt which does that and tons more. I've stopped using Twitter apps completely since implementing this into my browser. From what I understand Troy is planning to port this script to other browsers.

i twittered this 22hrs ago - "the following feature on twitter, of others, is not working!" & i didnt hear or see any posts or speculations about this.
  • GadgetJase · 5 months ago
All OK, but still how do you remove followers? All you can do is block them, not remove them permanently from your "followers" list ??
  • Benjamin Dobson · 5 months ago
    Don't like. :-(

    Two main gripes:
    1. There's way too much contrast between the hover styles and the normal styles. The buttons look disabled until you hover over them.
    2. Those buttons are horrible!
  • Meli is my name! · 5 months ago
Way to go twitter, keep on bringing these nice features! If only there was an auto follow, it's only right to follow back ppl who are following you and to manually unfollow them for any reason.

The creative director of Twitter (@stop) has told me that a fix enabling unprotected accounts to permanently remove blocked users from their followers lists is being implemented. I'm choosing not to tweet again until that's been actioned.
  • PragueBob · 5 months ago
The "improvements" aren't too bad except for two important facts: it is now impossible to see at a glance in the "following" list if someone you are following is following you also (mutual), in order to do this you now have to use the drop down to see if you can DM the person; and Twitter is not removing the people you blocked from your "followers" list previously during the recent time of troubles (about the past two weeks) when all things Twitter went wonky. I find both of these facts to be more than just minor irritants.
  • Friedrich Kuhlau · 5 months ago
Fully agree. My tweet strike continues until the second of these issues is fixed. If Twitter takes too long about it, it's bye bye Twitter. No way am I supporting a social media network that gives the impression it's condoning spamming and pornography by not immediately removing all trace of such blocked accounts from the followers lists of GENUINE users.
  • 29er · 5 months ago
Agree as well. I had already posted about the inability to easily see who follows back before I read your note. I like the old screen better! Would be nice if they would put a check-mark next to somebody's name if they follow you back. They do that on the page that shows who follows you - you get a check-mark on the folks that you follow back. Let's use that same idea to show who follows you back.
  • Vanessa · 5 months ago
Is there a setting so you see your followers PROFILES instead of their last tweet? I used to be able to hover over the name to read their profile to decide if I want to follow back. Your article suggests you can view profiles without having to visit each users page. Any suggestions?
  • Tara Burner · 5 months ago
    I'm lovin the new layout!
  • Mauricio | BBRocks.com · 5 months ago
Definitely some nice additions, but now whenever I check my followers it freezes sometimes.
  • Friedrich Kuhlau · 5 months ago
Noticing that a fix (of sorts - it's not perfect, as it doesn't 'take' first time) for the removal of blocked spammers from one's followers list does now seem to be in place.
  • Douglas · 5 months ago
So now how do you look at who you are following and see if they are following you back??
  • Brian A. Thomas · 5 months ago
However my followers count is still off from the actual number of tweeps following me. Are they following but blocking?
  • 29er · 5 months ago
This change removed a feature that I found useful. Used to be when you looked at your "Who are you following" page, you saw a "Direct Message" button for those folks that followed you back. Now if you want to check for reciprocity, you know have to click a button on each user name. The page that shows "Who follows you" has a little check-mark if you are following them back. It would be nice to see this implemented on the "Who are you following" page, a check-mark if they are following you back.

REPORTING FAIL: How are you seeing the BIO from either the Follower or Who You Follow pages? It's not there. The useful hover/pop-up view of the user BIO is now GONE. Now a click-through is needed to see the BIO - which just adds more traffic and more server hits. What was Twitter thinking?

Seeing "last tweets" for people you already follow is OK. But pretty useless for new followers who I need to vett before following in return. That's where the BIO came in - now it's more of a hassle to decide whether you want to follow or not. FAIL.

Twitter keeps Tweaking. I've noticed several interface changes over the past few months. Still prefer TweetDeck for most functions, but I do have TweetDeck go to my web browser when clicking on a profile. And I love that there's now one-click RT without having to go back to TweetDeck or hand-copy the username/post.

@Ohdoctah - I think Mager was a trackback posted on another site. I get them on my blog all the time.

@Steve Hall - I keep the inbound "you've got a follower" messages in Eudora, where they're easy to search.

Bug in Mashable keeps the ball spinning after comment is posted. If you're getting duplicate comments, that might be why.
