Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Professors: 18 People to Follow for a Real Time Education

  • Danny · 9 months ago
Don't know if this helps - and I'll make no claims toward expert status or ninja-dom
    – but my background is in performing arts (major in Acting/Directing for stage)
as well as some experience in playwriting. Now working in digital. And looking
    into opportunities for teaching, etc...
  • TRMite · 9 months ago
@lbraun2000 is a library science professor who tweets about where teens and technology meet in our current world. always interesting stuff.

  • Christopher S. Penn · 9 months ago
Thanks for the writeup, Lon! I'd also recommend uber-economist @mesimos of e-Forecasting. She's wicked smart at the econ stuff as well!
  • Barbara Uechi · 9 months ago
Lon Cohen would be number 19 on my list. Thanks for such a cogent list.

Great post Lon! I have tweeted this out. I would add myself as well as
@alexkaris who found the Hurricane of Gratitude on Facebook as well as some of
my very good co social media coaches @billcrosby @gabestrom and @prosperitygal.

I have a list much like yours. Maybe I will take the time to list as nicely as
you have done here. I find these type of recommendations to be VERY useful.
    So thanks once again!

was surprised to not see Cheeky Geeky here. (Or me, for that matter, but no worries) But Cheeky I would have expected.
  • Bruce > The Hockey Writers · 9 months ago
Thanks for sharing that, I just added about half of them. There's so much fluff
on the Net it's great to find a little nugget like this.
As for myself, just getting going with Twitter. I've spent the last month
launching The Hockey Writers. It's been a blast. I can be found on Twitter
    under TheHockeyWriter.
  • Jeffrey Levy · 9 months ago
Wow. You just added 70% to my follower list in 4 hours. I'm honored and not a little astounded to be included on your list. Thanks! I hope I can continue to help you learn about what the gov't is doing in social media!

    always worth following.

Thanks so much Lon - very nice to get some recognition now and again. Funny, when I saw my twitter follower stats going up so fast today, I checked TwitterCounter and realized it was over 400 new followers, I guess largely from this post. Which considering the fact that I was #15, I can only imagine how many some of the other folks gained - might be an interesting little post-post research. Of course, this is not important in the least, but it is the only measuring stick most people know how to use...

When at twittercounter, I noted that I was ranked something like #564 or 645 or something like that - how many people are out there like me that are at 2,800 or even 280,000 who aren't only sharing personal insights that are valuable but they are helping people learn, participating and sharing

What is important here is for all of us to attribute and retweet more - each microblog and each interaction is another chance for someone to disover their next professor, their next friend, their next girlfriend or their next business partner.

So as we keep saying with http://socialmediaclub.org/ if you get it, share it... we should probably add 'if you got it from someone here, let everyone know who taught you...'

I started following all of those right away. Always looking for interesting

One of my professors of late has been @arjunbasu. I have been following him
since last Fall. I enjoy the brief interludes so much, I regularly visit his
page to see the latest versus waiting or searching on my timeline.

    http://twitter.com/arjunbasu

He has shown me the path of the 140 character short story and done so with
brilliant examples of his own. He's stubbornly fostering a new genre and
inspiring many writers and readers to imagine, laugh, or pause.

    He inspired me to create @Twirled - http://twitter.com/Twirled - and I am
enjoying the challenge and the exercise. And that pleasure, I believe, is
what every good teacher longs to create.

You left out the one real life professor http://twitter.com/lonniehodge who
who tweets news, views, humor and charitable concerns from China. Check
American Professor in Google and see who shows up. Then read his blog and
see quality writing without an agenda.
  • Beth Kanter · 9 months ago
Thank you for including me on the list! Never thought yesterday's
rants about powerpoint templates would make it onto mashable!

Anyway, one professor you should add to your list is Laura Fitton
@pistachio. I've learned so much from reading her stream. She deserves
    a whole feature post!

I read this very interesting blog post and agree with Lon's Twitter strategy.
I didn't think that Twitter is such a interesting place wher You can find not
only interesting people but share their thoughts, opininons, explore things
and trends they are tweeting about, building strong postive relationships
    with them.
Thanx for the list of interesting people either!

Lon - many thanks for the well-developed list. As I'm new to the Twitter
community, I was pretty pleased at the number of folks whom I was already
following, and I have added several others you suggested.

This is the type of info new folks can really use. Enjoyed your "reasons" for
    following each. @CoachMary

I really loved Jeffrey Levy's post about good judgment!

    Thanks for the post!

I would add @johnmaeda to the list. He's the new President of the
Rhode Island School of Design. He used to be at MIT so it's like design,
art thinking, computer science, and technology all rolled up into one.

I'll admit it. I don't use Twitter much at all. I played around a bit a
a couple years ago but it never really stuck with me.

However, your article has inspired me to give it another go and see what
I'm missing. It sure does look like Twitter is more useful than I thought it
    was.

    Thank you.
  • dp · 9 months ago
Lon, great great post. I'm a big follow of @ltouby for media news and some of the others for web strategy.

Another to add to the list (and a true to life Professor):

@sreenet = Sree Sreenivasan, Dean of Students and Columbia Journalism and New Media guru.
He's always out ahead of newsworthy stories.

    rock on.

Guy I follow who is about the best I've seen talk about the media is @LifeofMichael. He's apparently a TV news guy except honest. u ask him a straight ?, u get a good answer. @brianbolter is also pretty funny.

I really have to disagree about Laurel Touby. The signal to noise ratio of her tweets is very, very low.

Sure she tweets from lots and lots of events, but it's endless name-dropping and not much value.

Another person I have been folowing is @sgourley, he is a Rhodes Scholar and TED fellow. He's studying the mathematics of war and tweeting about all sorts of interesting topics. Here's the some of the latest:

Awesome post Lon, you just grew my follow list. :)

One more recommendation - you might check out Dr. Kirsten Sanford (DrKiki) for
a great example of someone using Twitter to teach Science.
  • Meryl Steinberg (meryl333) · 9 months ago
Delighted you find my tweets of value. Appreciate your vote of confidence by including me with such an great group of tweeters. New followers who are dropping in to introduce themselves are a diverse, interesting-- and engaging bunch. Hope I have time to get to know them better. We all have much to learn from each other.
  • carolz_place · 9 months ago
Great post on who the greats are. It's nice to know
who you can trust as a mentor sometimes. So many out
there make claims nowadays. You can learn something
from everyone though, so just keep an open and positive
mindset. Thanks again for the tips.

ooops! That last comment was meant for Chris Brogan! On the other hand I should also start taking your advice. Great list, thanks I have added to my twitter list.
  • denki · 9 months ago
Good information, thanks a bunch! :)

My only regret is those example tweets being unclickable. It would have been cool to check some of that content in context.

    Keep up the good work!

I think if you browse my entries, you might like what you see in poetry analysis.

But you're gonna have to convince me to get on Twitter. I'm quotable, but not in a 140 characters or less.
  • Vinny O'Hare · 9 months ago
Great list I started following three people asap.
  • Harold Shaw · 9 months ago
Thank you for the list of interesting people, it gave me even more blogs/sites to look at and expand
my information base. I have been doing that a lot this year and have learned
    great deal.

It is important that we have a variety of authors to follow, if we only follow
those who have the same perspective as our own, then we don't grow or learn.

thank you again for this list.

Great list, Lon. There's some really interesting people on that list that I hadn't added already. Following people like that is what gives Twitter it's greatest value. I've never learned as much as since I started using Twitter.

I share my knowledge on social media, internet marketing and recession marketing (#recessiontips) on Twitter but I teach courses on that at Universities and privately.

Thanks again for a great list

Can anyone of you describe that why character education is necessary.
