Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Downtime is Denial of Service Attack (DDoS)

  • David Spinks · 4 months ago
I guess I'll go outside now.
  • Kasey Skala · 4 months ago
David, we don't want you doing anything drastic now. Maybe start with opening a window!
  • Elizabeth K. Barone · 4 months ago
Looks like rain here on the East Coast, so I don't think I can even do that!
  • Dave Lucas · 4 months ago
Honestly, with the sheer volume of traffic going through twitter's servers at any given millimoment, it's a miracle they're able to keep the service up and running as well as they do!

Um, knoyce is just another shitty ning network. It's not new, and it doesn't do a damn thing.

    Identi.ca anyone?
I'm at http://identi.ca/tdobson anyway and the jabber integration and API is working fine.
  • Ulo · 4 months ago
    http://Jisko.net anyone?
It's FOSS, with ajax interface, better design, twitter and jabber integration and API is working fine.

They say they are back up but still defending against the DDoS ... course since a couple million people are trying to log in right now, they are *insanely* slow ...
  • @hill79 · 4 months ago
"Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack."

    *so* totally not back up!
  • Rokkster · 4 months ago
Knew that one was coming! Wonder whether they had the pre-warning 'pay up or else' or this is a shot across the bows in lieu of the mega DDOS + $5m blackmail request!
  • Bryan · 4 months ago
They say they are back up but still defending against the DDoS, but good luck getting into Twitter right now... :)
  • Stajo · 4 months ago
It had to happen anyway. Internet is full of hackers and thus not safe but guys who run twitter are with experience and I'm sure they know how to handle that!
  • Joe · 4 months ago
Yep it's the DDoS! not just Twitter...

I got the inside story :)

11:16 AM EDT: Twitter still down here. Error message: "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."

Seriously, why do people do this?

    omg teh haXX0rz!!!11one!!eleven
  • musttweet · 4 months ago
facebook down too. I wonder if the facebook link to twitter is is a security hole?
  • timwhitlock · 4 months ago
I guess I can't "sign in with Twitter" to comment then.

Seriously though - as we rely more and more on fewer, larger services this kind of thing is a real danger. The internet was brilliantly designed to be decentralized, and now we're seeing a reversal of that due the small number of huge, ubiquitous brands.
  • Marco Carag · 4 months ago
Or...*do* let your brand grow big, but design it with a more distributed infrastructure. These attacks will continue to happen occasionally -- but I don't think there's an urgency for people to maintain dozens of different accounts just for redundancy's sake.
  • ericabiz · 4 months ago
Uh, anyone can run their own OpenID server. This is a non-issue.
  • gkgk · 4 months ago

Really, that's the ONLY site that's working? Because this site that I'm reading that comment on is working, google is working, digg is working. You fail at spamming.

Wonder how many Twitterers who took part in the DDoS attack on Iranian govt websites will feel about being the victim this time?

(I'm not saying that as support of the Iranian regime, far from it, just pointing out the moral question of taking part in such actions)
  • webthreads · 4 months ago
Has it crossed anyone's mind that this could be a case of tit-for-tat?
  • rousso · 4 months ago
Isn't it a drag to desperately want to re-tweet something and being unable too??? :-p
  • Guest · 4 months ago
is it a sort of warfare to make a social media melt-down. Twitter is still down but interestingly a few minutes ago, I got a connection to the website !!!! Blogging about this also http://alomoris.wordpress.com/2009/08/06/twitte...
  • Ricardo M. · 4 months ago
    I need to tweet this!!
  • AssassinGrl · 4 months ago
Thank god it's just a DDoS attack. I thought I broke it when I announced that I was gonna get laid.
  • Cristian · 4 months ago
    LoL ?!
Imagine now about 10 people beeing able to tweet? What would be the trendings?

Maybe one of that trends would be #getlaid

    hahahaha
  • Judy Rey Wasserman · 4 months ago
Is it a coincidence that this attack on Twitter comes when Iran Protesters, who us Twitter as a lifeline, were protesting the inauguration of falsely elected so called President Ahmadinejad? The time coincides perfectly with a great peaceful protest push.
No doubt we will see videos late on You Tube and discover more news about both the protests in Iran and attack on Twitter as the day continues.
On Twitter, as @judyrey, during attacks, worms, and news, I frequently send followers to mashable.com. Thanks for the ever updating and informative help regarding our social media sites!
    Judy Rey Wasserman
  • Jorge · 4 months ago
Clearly my morning is quiet without twitter. The attacker is probably using other IP addresses so we'll never know who it is. What I wonder is how much more traffic does friendfeed get when twitter is down. At least it's a way to keep connected.
  • Brent · 4 months ago
Now the barrage as made FriendFeed Search unavailable. The collective "We" are now the DDOS attackers to the remaining social media "hub" sites.
  • Dave 2.0 · 4 months ago
Yay... twitter is back up - still recovering from DDoS though
  • schmeeeb · 4 months ago
betcha it's that "President" A--h--- and his goons in Iran.
  • Anon · 4 months ago
So rumor has it that the DDoS on Twitter, LiveJournal, and Facebook is coming from Iran! I guess to try and stop people/protesters from using these websites to communicate? Would make sense if true!
  • Gavin S. · 4 months ago
Chalk it up to naivete, but, hard as I try, I fail to understand a hacker's motivation. Is it simply to wreak havoc or are they trying to make a point? And if they are trying to make a point, why not do so in a more constructive way?

Or perhaps it is more sinister than that?

    Thoughts?
  • @hill79 · 4 months ago
Historically it was done for bragging rights, you hack a high profile target and you gain notoriety with your peers. Obviously there were always the people who did it for political reasons or for their own, slightly odd-ball reasons (see Gary Mckinnon hacking NASA looking for Aliens) but the political motivation seems all the more common these days.

If the outage coincides with things going on in Iran, there's your answer, someone trying to prevent use of one of the only avenues of free speech Iranians have.
  • downrightnow · 4 months ago
downrightnow is a service that launched recently to monitor service disruptions at popular web services, including Twitter. The site automatically posts updates about outages and service trouble and we’ve been on top of this morning’s outages — feel free to stop by for updates or to report any other issues.

Anyone notice one of the top bookmarks on delicious right now is the Twitter status page? That's not really surprising in itself, but what is are the tags one of the users used (http://delicious.com/b0ttle). Not sure if the fact they've tagged 4chan with similar tags is a clue as to the source or I'm reading too much into it.

doubt how can someone alone do that? it must be organized for sure! but I think twitter is supposed to have a good way dealing with those attacks, why we never see facebook down, or google or other services?? twitter is an amateur :D and that makes Google chance to own it very high
  • acydlord · 4 months ago
Except for the little fact that facebook has been down all morning likely due to the same DDoS attack. I wouldn't want google to even attempt to buy twitter; when google bought jaiku they ruined it.

Pete you're getting confused, one minute you say it's a DoS then a DDoS?

Twitter themselves said it was a DoS, but I can't imagine that just one person would be behind it...

It's probably a measure to save America from the swine flu. Come on, get out , get SOME sun and therefore some Vitamin D into your body, and it will help you to survive the coming Swine Flu and the also coming compulsory vaccines.

And leave Twitter alone for God's sake ... just for a few hours .... they've got enough traffic right now.
