Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Debuts New Homepage

  • Lori Anne Brown · 4 months ago
I like the new Twitter home page, but think they should have left the "what is twitter" link - a video or a page about what it is.

And the "join the conversation" box should be more prevalent as its too easy to confuse the page with a search engine. Even after you search for something, there is little to say what to do with that list of results. Perhaps each tweet should have a "reply to this Tweet - Join or login now" or something else to explain it. You get the standard "this person is on twitter" box if you click on one of the links in a tweet, but does this make twitter any less confusing for a newbie?

Just not sure they have done enough to help initiate new visitors to what Twitter is or why they should use it. I would like to see something about building friends/family lists to keep in touch, interactivity of conversations and explanation of replies/direct messages, etc. Perhaps on a separate page, but I do think they need SOMETHING more than making twitter look like a search engine.

If Twitter Search ACTUALLY WORKED, this might be a good thing. Those of us who use twitter regularly can tell you our tweets are missing from Search, expected results do not appear in search, and there are many bugs in the new Twitter API, since the "more" and New Search features were added.

The old Twitter API did not have these bugs.

Twitter seems more concerned with its shiny new image and less concerned about making an API that actually works.

Looks gorgeous, but I think search shouldn't be the only thing emphasized on the homepage.

Also, yeah, I'd like to see this new look available to people who are actually logged in. ;)
  • Leon Taveras · 4 months ago
This is the 3rd upgrade of the homepage...is a big change!
  • MathieuB · 4 months ago
The best looking one by far! I love the new design and choices of colors, it looks fabulous =D
  • d3bruts1d · 4 months ago
It is a major improvement... but now days, how many people actually use the Twitter website rather than a mobile or desktop app?
  • MathieuB · 4 months ago
Quite a lot still. Then again, keep in mind that this new homepage is mainly aimed at people who have yet to subscribe to Twitter and wonder what all the buzz is about and go visit it for kicks.

    likin' it!

so different and without warning I nearly had a heart attack when I just logged out and saw it for the first time. Good stuff. Unfortunately I feel like 95% of all trending or popular topics are of absolutely no interest... we shall see!

This is a huge change. Watch out Bing!!!

"all you need to do is logout of Twitter."

    We can DO that? :o
  • Rose · 4 months ago
I like it. If you click on a trending topic, it describes why. However, how do we get the same info when logged in? Sometimes all the tweets are "Why is _______ trending?", making it somewhat difficult to decipher why something is trending exactly.
  • twe4ked · 4 months ago

Terrific new home page! Keeping it simple is wonderful. I dig it.
  • Xavier · 4 months ago
And the rest of languages for the user outside of US and Japan??? Twitter should give more support on that aspect. Or what about the most relevants hashtags: #iranelection, #honduras, #moldova, etc, etc.
  • unveiled · 4 months ago
It's definitely a very different approach, and I'm not sure I like it. When I told people how great Twitter was, and people asked what it was, I told them just watch the video. Now it's not so clear where that video is now without searching and wondering if it's somewhere like on the about page.

The search really can define what it truly is, and beneath its simpleness it's a very powerful website and web application. Simply, it's people talking about topics or whatever, their opinions and such or just being down right silly. Some new users might not figure this out without signing up though, which is something I'm afraid of for Twitter. Yes they're big now, but you should never think everyone in the world know what Twitter is.

In fact just today my friend asked me "what twitter exactly anyways?" It wasn't too hard to explain, but I said it's pretty much Facebook's status feature and nothing else. Yea it's more than that, but the point of it is that.

I would've liked a better homepage, something that took use of the screen space at least height wise, but you can't expect much from them I guess. Twitter servers are slow as hell though! Took 5 minutes to load their new homepage, and it didn't even load the CSS the first time.
  • Ana Luisa Cigüeñas · 4 months ago
i agree they need a new video. the thing is that twitter "concept" have changed by the use twitters have given to it, which i find great.
it is clear that the lead "what are you doing right now" was out of date...and i think kept a lot of potential users out of it, including me until recently.
i think most of twitters value is in its search tool but it seems that having it without the need of login in will not help to increase its user base...
anyways, there would always be passive and active users, so at the end i think the move is positive in the sense that it will help understand no-users what is twitter about and what is happening around it...
finally, i hope people stop using twitter to say they are going to sleep...etc, it's annoying!
    excuse my english!

The dynamics of the most popular topics will be interesting to watch. The joy of it is of course, the users have to create the buzz. An an appearance there is fleeting and fickle, and fun to watch. It is us.

it's refreshing to see a new design that didn't deviate from their brand :) and the focus on search is great. Though the right corner faded cut off looks a bit strange
  • mollyblock · 4 months ago
The new tagline on the home page -- "Share and discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world" -- is an improvement, in addition to the prominent search feature.

    @mollyblock
  • Josh · 4 months ago
Isn't "See what people are saying about…" bad grammar? Shouldn't it be, "See what people are saying..." or "See what people are talking about..."? Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • Kristine · 4 months ago
  • Your Name* · 4 months ago
You're supposed to fill in the blank with what you want to know people are talking about. So it would read "See what people are saying about . . . Josh."

Not appearing properly when I signed in.

@Jennifer, Mashable: Why don't you guys link to THE NEW HOMEPAGE so we can check it out? =)

Huge change - wonder if the constant spam issue w/the trending topics will be an even bigger problem now that search is at the forefront of their homepage.

  • The Last Show · 4 months ago
I like the feature of showing the recent "popular" topics (more understandable than "trending") "right now," "today" and "this week" with clickable links to a search of the topic.

Only problem I can see is what I saw happening just now- people clicking on (TrayCyrus live > http://ustre.am/4jv1) only @tracecyrus isn't streaming- LOL- just a black screen.

Just noticed the handy search tip box- cool.

Does anyone know- Has Twitter always had this color scheme? Totally opposite of current color trends; therefore fresh, recognizable and hip!
  • robblewis · 4 months ago
Never before has a simple homepage face lift meant so much. I'm not just referring the the fact that it's clean and simple, but the real-time search front and center. This has to compete with Google as one of the first places consumers go to search for things - especially for current events and news, Google's Achilles heel. Very good move by twitter.
  • Michelle · 4 months ago
The best thing they could have done. Now it's a good old fashioned search engine, just real-time.
  • Michael Bauser · 4 months ago
It's a "good old fashioned search engine" that's dependent entirely on user submissions.and dores spam-filtering by hand. As far as search engines go, that's 1997 technology. This would be considered a joke if it was launched by anybody but Twitter.
  • KennedyIAm · 4 months ago
Definite the best so far. Still, I look for bigger and better things from our friends at Twitter. Now off to fend off some of the twitter spammers who have been relentlessly attacking lately....

Just about the worst graphics they could of used. Not sure what if we ever need to see it again. Not sure if Twitter profit model is..never thought about it!
  • Jared Montz · 4 months ago
I like it!! Facebook will not be happy about this. I think Twitter's growth will sky rocket even more now b/c people can very easily try it with search option big on front page and realize how cool it is with out evening signing up.

Well. . . It's certainly an attractive re-design (for the most part).

As far as functionality goes, it doesn't parse keywords out of bio's to include in search results, so that's something to be desired. (just tested it with words from my bio, and with a unique keyword added to my bio..)

Time will tell insofar as weather or not they've noticed the trending metrics aren't relevant to their established userbase. I don't think most early adopters like myself are interested in goodnight, m&m's, and the like.

Lets see how this unfolds and evolves.

    I wish them the best!

Hey Twitter, probably better to use correct grammatical English on your home page "See what people are saying about…" FAIL!

Should be "talking" about or better yet "tweeting" about, comprehend?
  • Michael Bauser · 4 months ago
The search box is part of the question -- it's a fill-in-the-blank, you half-wit. "See what people are saying about... _____."
  • ArticlesFYI · 4 months ago
Either way it still is grammatically in-correct, search box or not. It should be "See what people are tweeting about... _____." To be really half-wittedly pedantic no tweeter's saying anything, they're writing & reading tweets and not in that order. But then I spose being an Internet troublemaker and mildly anti-social dinner conservationist, your not open to other peoples ideas.

Just for the record, the new front page rox.
  • Michael Bauser · 4 months ago
English must be your second or third language. Native English-speakers haven't taken the word "talking" that literally since three minutes after the first "chat room" went online.

I think the new design is great. Search on the home page (highlighted in a great way) opens up a good avenue for information. I liked the colour combination too.
  • David Hopkins · 4 months ago
Yeah, like it. Might be more 'inclusive' for those not yet using it.

I'm definitely impressed by the new homepage. Get rid of the Facebooky social network spin and foreground the search function. Now if only they'd extend this to the rest of the site...
  • pacdi · 4 months ago
Ok, seriously, how much searching can people do? There's gotta be a better way to attract users and monetize them than through "search"! LAME.

  • aquabarrel · 4 months ago
Wow! really like the colors they chose - looks just like the color scheme used at www.aquabarrel.com
  • Nate Long · 4 months ago
I like it! I will say, though, that I probably never would have seen the new homepage had I not read this post. I use a lot of third-party stuff and haven't seen the homepage in a month or so. However, I agree with MathieuB in that the homepage is mostly for people joining or still new to Twitter and still an important and relevant landing page for many. Great job on this one, Twitter!
