I always check followers to see if I want to follow them back, or if they are harmless but boring, or if they are spammy. I block the spammy ones. So I didn't see any change.

I agree that I check followers. I'd rather have legitimate followers who might actually be reading/thinking about my tweets. I found I lost some whom I thought were legit, so that also says something about how I check them out. :)

@soccerboyLA lost about 50 followers. Not a lot, but that number is almost a full third of all my followers. Though as someone who also uses twitter to get out information about my shows, performances and writing I am happy that my followers are now actually people so I can connect with my audience more. So that's good. But the fourth grader in me, his ego is a little crushed.

I don't mind losing spammy accounts, but I thought I already blocked them. I had 347 followers last night and 287 this morning, plus some I followed are not now being followed by me. What's up with that? I've had to refollow several, and don't know who I had before to refollow now. Thanks Twitter, for making life MORE COMPLICATED! SHEEESH!

Me too! The tweeps I was following dropped from 300 to 296. Frankly, I would have preferred to drop them myself. But, since I CHOSE to follow them, I am a bit upset that Twitter saw fit to make this decision FOR me! Now I've got to go back and figure out who's missing. My contacts were all legit, as I block spam daily...and I lost 75 from a total of almost 300, so Twitter screwed the pooch on this one. One of my client accounts lost approx 80 legit followers as well. Bad Twitter!

About 50 odd I think maybe more. No I don't want spammers following me. I was on Twitter one day and my following suddenly shot up by over nearly too hundred! It creeped me out so much, I didn't tweet anymore that day. It corrected by the following day.

It's good that I know that the ones that are following are doing so out of choice rather than a robot programmed to do so. A couple of weeks ago I spent several hours trying to weed out a couple of hundred of people that I follow since I reached the 2000 cap so I appreciate the effort by Twitter to eliminate the bad accounts for me and the 10% loss of Followers is meaningless if those 200 accounts were not good ones in the system

I think i'd prefer more legitimate followers other than spammers to be honest. IT's so bloody annoying when you get spam tweets, although some of the bots or spammers can provide some interesting stuff like @Ubuntuu so that ones helpful, so imho, if the accounts from a trusted company like Canonical or say Fedora Foundation or PHP, MySQL and Apache then I'd follow them. Providing they give actual help etcetera.

I had around 800 followers listed by Twitter, it dropped about 120 of them. I pay more attention to those that I follow than worry about who is following me. Some of the auto-follow programs are just plan silly. Once I included the word nuggets in a tweet, and within minutes the Denver Nuggets were following me!

I'm relatively new to Twitter--my followers haven't even reached the triple digits. Even now, though, i check out each person who follows me and block the pornstars and suspicious-looking characters. I'd love lots of followers but I want real people who care about what I have to say. At the end of the day, social media has to be about connection. To me, Twitter is a place where every stranger is a potential consequential stranger. BTW, I must thank Mashable--it has been my main source of knowledge about Twitter and other social media.

It's good to be rid of spammy followers, but at the same time disturbing because we have no say in the matter. Maybe we should have received an alert from Twitter giving us the list of followers they planned to delete from our account, and let us weigh in - some of them may have been legit.

Unlike other people I've seen on Twitter, I'm not looking to get the highest number of followers I can. I use Twitter for legitimate reasons such as news, networking and finding helpful resources. I've only been using Twitter for a couple months now, so I have a small number of (legitimate) followers (under 50).

Thanks to Twitter's purging, I've lost about fifteen followers since yesterday. The thing I can't figure out is why these followers were removed...they all seemed legitimate to me. Yes, I have gotten my fair share of "spam" followers, which are usually obvious with tweets such as "See my pictures at..." or "Get 1000 followers in not time!...", but I don't see how fifteen of my followers were marked as spammers?

If this is how Twitter is going to react to spammers, I think they should leave it up to the user to decide what's spam and what's not.

I lost around 40, or about 25% of my followers. I guess I'd rather have legit followers, like others have noted. However, I was kind of amused by the idea of these people getting all of my updates. I certainly wasn't following them, having sniffed them out. But, given how silly I think spammers are for even trying to use Twitter in this way, I kinda liked that they had to follow me for their system to even slightly work. It was almost retribution, having to receive all of my updates.

I had about 250 subscribers, and now I am down to 59..Most of my subscribers wer people that I talked to and from youtube, and now they are gone and prolly think i deleted them. This process has been going on for over a week, I'm surprised it's just now getting picked up. I lost 60 in about 2 hrs. a week ago - and about 10 more yesterday. It's no big deal - I am assuming most were spam or porn accounts anyway.

I am more and more disappointed in the quality of followers; it seems about 8 out of 10 are porn/spam/I'll make you rich/SEO "expert" accounts that I would never follow. That said, I only actually "block" obvious porn accounts, since I don't even want them in my follower list.

Hopefully Twitter will eventually add more controls that will help block these BS accounts in the first place. People should be required to post a location and some type of bio info; even if it's not true, it would make for more interesting reading. In the end, quality is more important than quantity...

I've been aggressive in blocking spam accounts, so I saw no change in my follow count.

This brings up an interesting issue—if you know that spam accounts are following you, should you block them or not? Some people simply let them be, which inflates their count and makes it look like they are more popular than they are.

I decided not to take that approach, and keep my twitter count "honest". Those who didn't are the ones who are seen large drops in the counts—some greater than 25%!

I think it's a good thing to be rid of spam-followers. I lost about 60, even though I have been blocking spam followers myself continuously. As this article http://bit.ly/TuteW indicates, the relevance of your followers is much more important than their quantity.

I do wonder, however, if Twitter can't find a cure for the often disgusting spam following you get - in the beginning of the process that is, rather than to carry out a periodical sweep.

Morover, I have heard of several cases where people have lost legitimate followers. In one case, only the people the tweep had added in the past two days had remained. In other words: the sweep may not have been completely accurate.

I guess I may be rare in that i don't know my Twitter follower count. I know my Blog Follower count by heart and am greatly affected by the number of people who join my blog or who (sadly) leave it. But, as for Twitter, I really don't care if a lot of people follow me or not. I just talk about annoying mom stuff and don't think too many people get a lot out of me! Its just a great way for me to talk to someone other than my 11-month old!

So, I guess i'd say, forgot those spammers and who cares about twitter count followers! I, for one, am not concerned!

I'm much more concerned with quality than quantity, but this is way too Big Brother-ish. I too block spammers as they follow me, and would really like to know which of my followers got dropped. A better strategy would have been for Twitter to place the suspects into a new (and/or temporary) category and allow users to validate the choice to purge.

Some people are picky, but I think most people like a lot of followers, If you don't like who is following you you can block them, If you don't want their tweets just don't follow them, so the system works fine as it is.

Middle of the night, I was online. Followers 469; looked back 30 minutes later and it was 320. Legal contacts, couple law firm members working on US District Court actions and a few friends. Obama ordered this done also, since he was the target of the followers. I've been selective in who I followed and who followed me; visiting each site and making sure there was a close topic or theme. Spam followers serve one useful purpose - they allow us to follow more real people. :)

Good riddance, but Twitter really needs to fix the follow bugs and limits or at least make them more transparent. I want an API call that says "You have X number of follow calls remaining based on Y rule in effect".

I don't even bother checking who follows me (there are exceptions as I got notifications about very interesting new followers recently...) and normally follow back those who @ me :). It is simply too much work otherwise.

I only lost 29 -- the odd thing is, I still had at least a dozen I would have thought were spammers - nude girls, free pics, that sort of thing. I deleted them myself, which I try to do regularly. I think spam protection is a good thing but I would like to know what defines a spammer specifically. I lost several followers who absolutely were not, IMHO. Got to be a better way to do this without dumping legit accounts.

I dropped from roughly 80 followers to 56. Personally, I'm happy to be rid of spam accounts. Particularly x-rated ones. I'm not looking for a major follower base unless people are truly interested in what I have to say. I'm glad you mentioned this because I wondered what happened.

I lost 60 followers; went down from 1450 to 1390. What concerns me is that it happened when I was deleting a few DMs, and this is the second time it happened under similar circumstances (I was trying to delete spammers the first time). I scrolled quickly through my list & still saw spammers there -- I stopped trying to delete all of them after Twitter cut my followers the first time. I don't know about my legitimate followers though...

What surprised me was that my two most recent followers are obviously spammy and were not deleted. The each use the same profile pic. One has a status message inviting me to see naked pics, and the other invites me to see private videos.

It doesn't matter to me how many followers I have (or how many Facebook friends, etc). Like most people, I'm not in this for the money or the fame. I use the net to do things that are important to me, and connect with people who also find them important.

I only had 163 followers in the first place! I come home last night and only have 109 then 108! This morning I have 114. Even if they are spammers, I don't follow everybody anyway, I choose whether to go "with" or not. It is just hard to tell the spammers from the ligitamate offers. I guess you have the "ways" to determine which is which. A good thing. It was just shocking to see 50 odd people drop from the list at once like that.

My question is why did it happen in the first place? as in these spammy accounts. are they not real people at all? if not why are they there? wonder if you could help with another issue. I had another account under username tanyalw73 but somehow someone else besides me got into my account and changed my password on the web. the funny thing is that i was unaware of the change until notified via email by someone at Twitter support that my password was compromised. Personally I'd rather have fewer followers, but all of them being legitimate, than having a bunch of spammer followers instead. Funnily enough, where many lost followers, I seemed to gain quite a few, but most of them were spammers, so I blocked them immediately.

I lost about 40 out of 6600 so not a big deal. Second time in a month it's happened. I do not auto-follow so I am a little surprised I have that many spammers that I follow. Looked ligit to me. I would rather have a smaller number of "real" followers instead of just a bunch of numbers. But then, I'm not that much into counting followers - not a race I'm interested in.

Well it is certainly a good thing. It is better to have less followers if it means they are all real people. The purpose of the site is to connect with PEOPLE and share short messages to PEOPLE quickly, not send them to robots. Who really cares about how many followers you have, it's just another thing people boast about that doesn't really mean anything. Now you can have more followers and know they are real people.

None of my followers WERE spammers. I block or remove spammers/marketers/other people, and follow about 99% of those who follow me (that appear to be real people and I haven't blocked/removed). I went from 222 to 180 in the span of 3 hours. I suppose that the number could have been off and they just corrected it, but in any event it's frustrating.

Yeah, my website Twitterless that tells people when they lose followers has seen the amount of dropped followers for most people go up dramatically. I think this discrepancy has something to do with Twitter banning accounts. Who knows what the real reason is, but I'll be happy when it's all sorted out.

I lost most of my account and I personally loaded these people. Yes, I did have spammers and I find them very annoying. however, I had worked very hard via my keywords to load related people and build up a following of 7 500. This is no easy feat for a normal non-geek, non-social media person like me and I am gutted! Yesterday, I reported a few accounts that had strange behaviour on my account! I would like my followers back! Woe is me!! Twitter is twatted as far as I am concerned. Back to real interactions on FACEBOOK!

I lost 80 followers last night, which surprised me. The drop makes sense this morning, and I'm glad. Twitter saved me the trouble of blocking all of the spammers that have flooded my list over the last month.

I know it exactly as I had just reached 2,500 and on my night of glory was cut down in my prime down to 2,279!

I think it's a good thing of they were the spammy accounts, but still got a shock this morning when I checked my account as it has been growing nicely.

Maybe some wine or beer tonight will help numb the pain ;-)

@LindaThieman I lost about 50 spam followers. Now I'm just below 1200. I'm actually thrilled about it. I keep going in there and trying to delete them, but it is so time consuming. I wish Twitter would do this about once a month. I mean, what's the point of having empty accounts following you just to build your numbers? It's real people that matter. Love them!

Dropped by about 200 followers, when things like this happen from past experience expected thats what twitter was doing.

Note I did go to FriendFollow and check my following and that remained fixed so no trouble there.
also do use a twitter friend & follower export backup for just these occasions

I have 4 Twitter accounts, all biz-related. Biggest drop was from SinCityAdvisor, which went from 690 to 618 (always attracts porn bots : ). LVA_Tweet dropped from approx. 1,420 to 1,382. GreenVegas (new one) only lost 7 (now 129) and ToplessVegas also just shed a few - about 460 down to 437. But would much rather have fewer, quality followers than a bunch of spammers -- sheer numbers of no value if they have no interest or aren't even human!

My account was growing and then about three weeks ago stopped at about 14,200. I get new followers everyday and in the morning the count has dropped back down. It dropped about 60 followers again this morning.

Personally I would prefer to rid the system of spammy accounts since there is no one behind them reading or interacting with the system.

The thing I AM CONCERNED about is that my posts that used to get 200 or so visits to my blog when I posted an update have dropped to almost nothing. There is something going on with the way tweets are being distributed to my follower list as well I think

Went from 1065 to 1009 in a shot, which doesn't surprise me all that much -- I know there were spam accounts floating in my follower soup; I hadn't blocked them all (it was getting a bit tiring to block and report the more egregious ones.)

My following count dropped by perhaps four.

I just hope none of the accounts sluiced down Twitter's memory hole were legit.

My followers dropped from 39 to 24.. so lost 15. That's somewhere around 38% give or take, and was a significant hit. That was until I understood what it was about, and now I'm happy to know that everybody left is a legitimate entity and not just there to post links for me to follow into click rate oblivion, or wherever they go.

My opinion is that Twitter is a big part of the future..I like most everything about it. And clearly, commercialism will ruin it if allow to. So screw free access to everyone. Make it clean and tight and real and honest and open up the communications between the people on all levels. Power to the Twitter Nation!

I lost only 10, and numbers of people following me doesn’t matter. I don't automatically follow somebody if the follow me, and I don't expect others to do the same.

I am happy that Spammers are being thinned out. I always read a persons tweets if they add me, to see if I would be interested in following them. Spammers waste my time, while providing no useful information.

I am very worried about this new policy of Twitter. I tried in vain to find an explanation. I had more than 4000 followers and was following about 3800. They set down my followers to 3000 and as new followers come in the total number doesn't keep up with the joining followers, which means that there still are followers being eliminated

I don't mind, at all, simply because I have no interest in just getting followers.I'm not here for the numbers game. I want people to follow me who are interested in what I do and what I have to say. And I only follow people who interest me who do not tweet a sales url in every line. I really have an interest in the chat. I like the change. What I would like to see change, however, is the ability to once again be able to read someone's bio intro, before clicking on their name...instead of what they had for breakfast. Seeing their bio would let me know if I WANT to click on their name and potentially follow.

I lost close to 20. I'm glad it was something many others were experiencing. I though I was losing "follower" interest. I am glad that many of my spammers were lost. Makes my list much more real - actual listeners. Thanks for keeping us informed.

I lost about 20 ... and I'm usually pretty good about spammers following me but I guess I let some slide (I get lazy sometimes) I do like the new feature, however, where you can see the users last tweet. That way at least you have a clue as to whether or not spammer - and you don't have to click on their profile.

All said - I LOVE this feature. Thanks twitter.

Would rather have REAL people anyday.

The only thing I was sad about was that I was close to hitting a milestone (14K) and it dropped me down a bit... but, at the end of the day, my Twitter count is not that important to me. :)

40 followers lost. Ultimately, I think purging the spammy accounts is a good thing as I doubt they are checking out any of our links. However, before the purge we were one follower short of 2500, so I guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer to cross that threshold.

I lost 10% of my followers (about 55 people). I say "people," because I very carefully check out each of my followers -- blocking anyone who looks spammy or botlike. It's fine if Twitter wants to remove people who are behaving badly (i.e., violating terms of service). It's even fine if they want to remove followers who have excessively high follower/following counts (I don't follow those folks anyway -- I like genuine people who work to build relationships not those who use Auto-follow tricks). However, I shouldn't have seen a drop of 10% should I? Being as careful as I have been. I would prefer that Twitter not have made this sweeping "reform" in follower reduction. That takes away my CHOICE in who to remove and who stays. Feels a bit too much like a "big brother" move. What's next? Purging my follow list?

Yesterday about 3pmish I made a Facebook post: just discovered a hilarious thing. I lost 35 Twitter followers after posting this yesterday: ...discovered this week how to put sunscreen on my own back. Wooden back scratcher. Wrap dishcloth around the end Tape a little baggie over the dishcloth. Spray on sunscreen, rub it on. No spots missed... Granted it was not my typical Twitter post. Too hilarious.

The count was different every time I refreshed - 234 to 170 something back to 230 back to 170 something. It was kind of annoying. I prefer the legitimate followers. I don't use "follow software" and though I don't follow just anyone who followed me, I won't block those that followed me even if I know they are spammers. Bottomline, Twitter has done what I wanted to do but won't do myself.

I want you to stay off of my followers. I only lost 30 today, but I also lost contacts that I was following (and they were no spammers). Others I know have lost many more followers, one even lost 2600. How do you decide who is a spammer and who is not??? All my positive thoughts about twitter being a great networktool are turning negative. I would like to choose myself who I want to follow and if spammers follow me, so what? I don't follow them!

I want the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in my Twitter follower list, so I welcome the change. Okay, I realize that not all the 2000 or so followers on my list are hanging onto my every word...so maybe this is not an accurate reflection of who really cares about what I have to say. All in all, I lost about 30 followers in Twitter's housecleaning, but no one that I am also following seems to be missing. I got tired of blocking spammy accounts and am glad Twitter is doing the work for me...but a few random half-nekkid (sic) avatars seem to have crept back in already...Twitter vermin will always be with us it seems.

I noticed a loss from a bit over 3000 to 2915 so around 100 followers. It's not a numbers contest for me so I'm all for it if it means Twitter has found a way to clean out spammers. I tweet recipes and wine reviews so get a lot of followers but appreciate this effort to rid the system of abusers.

I lost about 160 last night in what seemed to be a matter of minutes. Was at the original count, then it dropped. After a few minutes, it went back up again, then went back down again and stayed there. Figured that it was either a glitch, or they were dealing with spammers...or, perhaps people all of a sudden figured that I was tweeting too much or found me to be irrelavent. :)

I lost around 30 followers. When I get a notification about someone following me, I always check out that person's Twitter page to see if it's someone I want to follow. If the person's page is nothing but referral links, they repeat the same 5-10 messages or they are just plain nasty, I won't follow them. Strangely, I was "unfollowed" from one page I had been following for about two months.

Now there's so much competition for numbers we choose vanity over cleaning up our Twitter environment. I vote for READERS over numbers and *ahem* a number of readers.

On July 23 at 02:30 I had 1,270 / 890 following and followers respectively.

On July 23 at 22:01 I had 1,256 / 750 following and followers respectively.

I lost 14 that I was following and 140 that were following me.

Of those 140 following me, I have no clue, but of the 14 I was following, almost 99% positive they were NOT spammers. Its always possible, thus the .01%.

If I follow you, its because I have at least looked at your twitter account page once, chances are I have surfed to one or more of the links from your twitter account and I definitely checked out your "Web" link if you provided one. Thus I weed out the obvious spammers real fast.

I do not care about Direct Messages, as there is that issue with being able to DM and whether someone is following you or not, so I just do not use DM, ever. No trust, not reliable. JUST FYI.

So if I am immediately taken to a spam site, I will NOT follow you. Its not perfect, but I avoid the obvious spammers.

I still lost 14 that I was following, doubt that they were spammers. I know all of them were NOT spammers.

As for the a company saying it was "human error" that is IT / Telco speak for we do not want you to doubt or have less trust in our systems, thus they always blame some poor person. Worst yet, in the telco case, they would always fire someone.

So much for learning from your mistakes. Except in my telco experience, some programmer would make the mistake, yet some computer operator was fired, go figure. But it was NEVER the systems problem.

One telco got so frustrated with one company that they bought them to fix the problem, lol. Whatever works.

What bothers me now, is it would not be easy for me to figure out who those 14 are at this point. The idea of going through my email account and comparing who is there to my following list is just crazy. Obviously I could start using any tool that would track this information and the next time it happens I could write a script to compare who I am following today, to who I was following yesterday and see all 14 immediately. Of course I would need an alternative way to contact each of those 14, thus such a tool would also have other non-twitter contact information.

Is this a Twitter trust issue, perhaps. Definitely something to consider as it would suck to be one of those 14 if twitter was the only communication method that I had available to me.

It does get you thinking, doesn't it.

I went from over 500 to 0 overnight! It's been a nightmare, trying to recover, as NONE were spam. I was affected by a bug that's been wrecking havoc on the twittosphere since early June. If you look in the Twitter Support Forums under "Frozen Timeline," you'll see thousands have been affected. Because the bug deletes all your followers but you still "see" them on your Profile, it appears as if you have a frozen timeline. Of course, you don't. There's just no one else left in your timeline but you. Did I mention this is a nightmare?

The worst of it? Absolutely NO support from Twitter on this. You're on your own when it happens, and starting from scratch. It's been a rough 48 hours.

On July 20th, 2009 I lost about 600 followers of 17k according to TwitterCounter. I'm a little surprised I had that many bots, etc. since I am pretty good about checking accounts regularly with Tweepular & Twitoria. I know much bigger accounts such as @webaddict experienced losses before July 20th and some others have not seen it yet.

I'm very happy that Twitter cleaned them out =)

So this not a uniform purge, but rather selective and targeted in my analysis. You draw your own conclusions. There is lot more to it.

It said I couod not follow ant new peeps, so I unfollowed and blocked some that I don't even remember authorizing. Anyway, I have a full in box of peeps who say they are follwing me,and if I want to follow back, I hope the system will allow me to. Do Peeps automatically get acccepted if you don't get to Tweetlater to approve after a certain amount of time? If so, that is how the "unknowns: showed up that I blocked. I hope you got the issue resolved. It also said I could not follow any new peeps, so I unfollowed and blocked some that I don't even remember authorizing. Anyway, I have a full in box of peeps who say they are follwing me,and if I want to follow back, I hope the system will allow me to. Do Peeps automatically get acccepted if you don't get to Tweetlater to approve after a certain amount of time? If so, that is how the "unknowns: showed up that I blocked. I hope you got the issue resolved. Yes, I would prefer to have real tweeps than spammers,. but someone should have given us a WARNING prior to taking our numbers down so at least we were aware of what was going on! Thanks, Paula

I've lost approx 20 follows & followers alike. Not a massive number I know but some of these were are actually legitimate.

Whenever I attract a new follower I always make a point of reading their profile & any URLs. If we share similar interests and their tweets have value of content then I follow or allow their following of my tweets. If said new followers are obvious spammers I block.

I'd be interested to know what metrics Twitter actually used to determine which accounts to purge, as whatever they were certainly haven't worked. I've noticed there are still spam accounts existing, and even those that provide the "follow-me-follow-back" chaining that serve no purpose other than fulfilling inflated ego's.

Zero because I only allow real friends to follow me. Others are blocked. Never understood this "open followers" thing. Why should I allow some stranger to read what I do/did or will do? I know that media is trying to use Twitter... but what are RSS feeds for? More apps for cell phones, computers, etc. 99% of the media companies (newspaper, tv, etc.) don’t follow their followers. So no sense to follow them on Twitter...

Recently, I have stopped following people back who are following me and have been clearing the people I am following whom I am not interested.

I was actually shocked to see a drop of about 200 followers! It may be due to my unfollow as well as spam purge... But it's good because I don't appreciate spam accounts as well as people who don't really have interest in me. Numbers do make an account look great! But I would prefer to have real followers.

I guess it's just about the law of attraction after all.

I lost about 68. However, I tend to check out who's following me and who I follow, so as to avoid spam. So I'm ok about losing the numbers and I prefer to build quality relationships over time.

A few weeks ago, my account was temporarily closed and I asked twitter to look into the auto response tool that sends DM's without my consent to followers. I'm yet to hear back from them on this one. I would welcome some suggestions though. :-)x

I lost 10% of my followers Wednesday night. When I logged on to Twitter Thursday morning, 80 followers were gone. I have no problem with that if it was spammers, but I home nobody got swepted up by accident. Problem is, the next day, I had numerous new followers that were porn & marketing types. So what is the use? It is a never ending battle. Let me decide who to block and who to not to block.

What do I think about Twitter's action to correct follower count? I think if they are deleting "legitimate" spam account followers - whatever that means - I'm all for it. And given that my count of followers hasn not changed in any drastical manner, I assume that I'm ok...

Yep, I lost 76 people. I am happy to hear it was Twitter cleaning up. I woke up and looked at my count and thought, "What the Heck?" "Did I Tweet something really boring?" LOL I was for sure I have scared some followers away.

Good to know my wit is still intact. And Yes, I am happy to lose fake accounts. I am here to truly connect with others and grow a network of friends and associates who can rely on each other not spam and waste each others time.

I try to vet my followers and screen for spammers, but as it turns out I guess I didn't get everyone. I had 15 deleted followers out of about 670. I would prefer to have "real" engaged followers rather than numbers. When you have inflated, inaccurate numbers it effects by stats (clicks per tweet).

I'd certainly prefer to see a higher follower count than a lower one, but not if it's inaccurate. Quality over quantity should be the goal of anyone who's using Twitter for non narcissistic purposes.

Perhaps we could all do our part to maintain more accurate numbers for ourselves by deleting the spam followers when we initially identify them. (After all, they're not hard to spot.)

I lost about 30-40 followers. However, this was a minor change for my account. I have already regained and moved past where I was. I am glad to see Twitter get rid of the spam accounts. I do screen my followers. My general policy is to return the follow unless there is something questionable about the follower. This could be someone who hasn't posted or has something in their bio indicating subject matter I don't want to associate with.

I lost 150 (4%) and I like it. I only auto followed for a few days but it sure takes a long time to manually review all new followers for interesting content. But worth it for me. Even following 3600 I find it difficult to keep up with my original 150 that I followed because they rock it. Like @MariSmith, @CoachDeb, @Mashable @DonnaFox but I do have a bunch of new friends around the world and I like that.

The whole purpose of Twitter and other social media is to engage in dialogue , to have followers that are genuinely interested in similar topics and will retweet and reply, striking up a conversation. If I have a bunch of spam-prone followers, they are not going to invest their time in my dialogue. So I won't even know they are gone.

I lost 123 out of 7,500 followers in the purge. But it was just a number.

The API has been returning fewer actual followers than the counts shown on the page for a long time. The lost accounts had already been disabled, it was just showing a higher number on the page. Now the API returns a list of followers that matches the counts shown.

Twitter adjusted my counts at the end of last week and I lost about 50 followers. I had about 1400 before that. I'm OK with the lower numbers because I know they're of higher quality than those I lost. I try to keep my follower/following ratio close anyway so this helped me clean up the undesirable followers. (ie. bots, MLM and yes even porn now, although I do block those).

Ironically, just after they reduced my follower count, I got about a dozen new followers from accounts that looked equally as sketchy. I guess it's like swatting mosquitos at dusk. You can get rid of some, but they just keep coming.

I lost hundreds of followers. ALL OF THEM, in fact. I know they were not all spammers and I am not a spammer. My tweets were of a religious nature as I was RTing various christian viewpoints. I use/used twitterfeed & tweetalert but I edit out even mildly hateful or offensive posts and I also was active with real conversations and manual RTs. I don't think I ever posted adds (less than 1% probably). So I don't know why all my followers vanished. Is it possible that twitter doesn't like certain christian viewpoints? The account wasn't deleted but this is almost just as bad. I want my followers back but I don't have the time or energy to contact them all (especially if this is just going to happen again). I use strong passwords so I don't think they could have been cracked. I am at a complete loss. I was very happy with twitter and spent a lot of time using it but now I am not so sure about it anymore. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions about who I should contact to see what happened an how the problem can be fixed? Like I say... you may not agree with me, but I was mostly just spreading the common ideas of christianity and actively engaging my followers. I lost a little over 100, but I am supposing that they are primarily spam accounts and people I have stopped following who are doing the same back with me. Since I have felt that having so many people sending messages all the time gets to be too overwhelming and impossible to catch all the messages from the ones I want. I just got TweetDeck; so I hope to be able to do a better job of organizing. So for me, I don't see this move by Twitter to be a bad thing.

I usually try to block them as soon as I notice them following but I guess some of them might not appear as obvious spammers, in which case I'd probably just leave them.

I haven't lost any followers, but then I block any spammy followers as soon as they pop up. The only people I allow to follow me are people I legitimately know. All the spam followering is really annoying, and I'm glad Twitter finally seems to be doing something about it.

There're enough issues with Twitter's site and an overload of users/traffic without adding hundreds of spam accounts and thousands of spammy messages into the mix.

why are people disappointed about "losing" followers, when you can't lose what you didn't have? does the number make you feel better, even if it's wrong?

I went through the task myself because I kept getting people who wanted to hawk their wares and naked bodies to me and some in compromising positions. I resented it because if I wanted to have sex with someone I know where to go. So even when they sign up I let them hang there until there are enough of them to purge. So that it does not stretch out. Maybe I should do it immediately but that requires a different sort of vigilance. I was up in the 2K range and brought it down to 1k and now it hovers around 1300- But it is all quality tweeters as opposed to BS.

I had a loss about 3,000 out of 13,000 on July 25th. It took me a month to get back to normal. It was a real bummer for me for it was also my birthday. That day turned out rather lame. My dinner resvervations were misplaced. I was hit by a SUV when I walk across the street. It was at slow speed, so no injuries.
I didn't feel I had a lot of spammers on my account for I rarely got any messages. Now I get 8 times more spam since that day. Oh well I guess that the way the tweet goes......

Personally I am not out to get "followers", so I do not care if someone follows me back or not. If I find one interesting tweet (and they are not selling something) I will follow them. When someone does not follow me back its okay, EXCEPT the twitter following / follower limits. Now all of a sudden I have to go back and delete people who are not following me back just so I can follow a few more interesting people. Yet I followed those people because I thought they were interesting. I simply do not like that. So I will get one of those automated "if you are not following me" I will drop you tools and C'est la vie.

When you are about to lose 800 - 900 following in one fell swoop, losing 10 or so following / followers does not seem to matter as much.

I basically lose 5 - 15 followers each time twitter makes an adjustment, which really hits me now that I am hitting the first 2,000 follower / following limitation.

Does make me wonder how many others are simply losing followers because they are not following back.
