I specialize in enjoying the one-way conversations I used to have to my spammer friends. I was wiped out today. A sad sad day in this home...but like cockroaches, a couple have begun to rise from the dead to replenish my follower list. So, like the San Diego Padres, we begin to rebuild.

I lost 100-200, but I want quality followers so all is well. Honestly, a few I was following passed by my own spammer radar so I cleaned out some of those I follow as well. I'm glad for the fix even though we don't appear as popular as we thought. Way to Go twitter! And great post as always. Thank you!

I haven't noticed anything yet, but I block and unfollow pretty aggressively when I see spammy accounts. I'm sure I've missed a few and look forward to losing them as they are just noise which distracts from the real value of Twitter.

Glad to see @twitter do something about the nasty problem.

Wouldn't it be great if we could click on a link (like this 'Like') to report and delete spammers in the Twitter stream?

Although I don't know how to resolve the 'accidentally clicked on valid post' issues. Maybe if they did an auto unsuspend feature with some kind of verification or witness that would remove some of the burden from @twitter and let us deal with the spam as we see it.

I have lost hundreds of followers (sorry, I meant spammers). I guess they were all hanging out around my twitter account @marioremedios. Twitter should clean up accounts on a more consistent basis. These spammers and bots are out of control.

I was glad I saw Mashable's tweet for this story. I was wondering why my followers went from 285+ this morning down to 162 tonight! I was given the knife by twitter..I am a real person with a real company that uses twitter to stay on top of conferences, people, etc. The worst part is that twitter can not give you a clear answer when you contact them...it is now when I miss a call center that eventually resolved the issue. I received 3 emails from twitter that never told me why...just that I was engaged in suspicious activity. It is so frustrating.

Yes, there is a screw up. They suspended my account and never told me why. I am not a spammer... I run an ad agency...and may followers and people I was following were people I met at social media conferences!!!!

Who cares if you lost a bunch of followers in an instant if they're all spammers and robots that don't give a hoot about your tweets and have a single agenda (to spam you)? While some people care about their follow counts, these counts are meaningless if they're filled with junky, spammy robots and people with hidden agendas. Goodbye spammy followers.

My account has been massively targeted with spammers, mostly accounts of females linking back to adult websites. I try to block as many as possible as soon as they follow me, but there's too many.

When I noticed that my follower count had dropped significantly, I felt a bit sad (even though I know I shouldn't--how silly!) because I was so close to finally having a "good" ratio: 50/50 or more followers. Oh well, I was getting tired of those obscene "Britney" avatars anyway.

This is great!! less followers more quality It is hard to keep up with the unfollow me when you get new followers everyday many spam .. The value of twitter for me is to communicate and exchange knowledge with a high quality network .. with all the bad followers the message is diluted or lost since it looks more like spam and the old email fwds forwards.. Pete--thanks for the article. My counts are still off 100-200+/- and have been for 2-3+ weeks. Guess they haven't gotten to mine yet-the batch I marked unfollow hasn't been removed yet in spite of the new ones I have added. Plus still can't view all of my followers. Will continue to be patient with tech support.

Once again, besides the porn, other spammers etal, folks need to be careful when falling for the posts that promise you a gazillion followers etc. which aren't targeted to your market if you are specific in using Twitter this way etc. are part of what's causing the problem.

At last, twitter finally doing something against spammers. I was getting fed up of reporting each spam follower to @spam & then deleting them. About 50 have been culled. Good day for Twitter, bad day for spammers. Downside though....I was starting to think all these porn stars wanted me for my *o** (that is post, not a part of the male body) :-)

I have always wanted to remove those porn promotions from my follower list but for some reason didn't....actually it felt good to see a couple of followers added to list after spending around 10 hrs on twitter a day. It was about time that Twitter purged spammers. I lost 43 followers, but hey, who's complaining? The spammers were (are) terribly, terribly annoying. Since I am a journalist, a lot of people also look at the quality of my followers -- apart from my tweets -- before deciding to follow. I didn't realize it was such a big contest on having alot of followers. There is really no reason for me to have followers. I just think it's fun. When I was a little girl, my dad and I would go downtown a little while before my mom got off work on Saturdays and just watch people. Twitter brings back those memories for me. lol.

way to go twitter - am i the only one underwhelmed by this? i lost around 30%: but at least a quarter of those were/are genuine and not spammers (have a relatively low base so its not difficult for me to know); at the very least, it would have been good to have received a list of who had been blocked. so another case of lousy execution.

The twitter change came as a sad surprise. We didn't know..we just saw a huge drop in numbers. I was at 460 and droped I think 150. I then, after feeling very bad decided to clean out the rest of the bots. Took a long time because they kept popping back. I am now at 220. 240 gone. I keep saying it shouldn't mean anything...why does it feel like it does matter. :o(

I feel like twitter is back. Twitter is about the conversation - after all mashable will always have more followers than most of us out here. I use socialtoo to help me keep up with things and so ended up with a bit of twitter spam in there. Good for twitter, although invariably, every time Twitter does this, there is always a story of a legitimate person, or exhuberant newbie, who often for reasons of being a beginner or just verbose, exhibits such behavior and gets axed wrongly!

Good job, Twitter, keep it clean!

mine dropped by about 2% - i am faithful about blocking spammers and advertising people as soon as they follow me so i am guess the 2% is primarily resulting from a tracking issue.

i appreciate that twitter did this though suspect it will be a constant battle.

I SURE DID NOTICE A BIG DROP! Earlier today I was following 221 people & I had 190 people following me! I thought for sure that I was a about to "break even" (have an = amount of "followers" & "followees"). Now I'm down to following 215 people & 145 people following me! The difference in the 1s I "follow" is small. Only 6 were actually spam & honestly, I had no idea that they were.) But the difference in my followers is rather big. I lost 45. I noticed a significant drop. I had 214 followers earlier today, now I have 137. I knew something was going on because earlier today when I tried to sign in to my twitter account I couldn't. Got a message that said my account was suspended due to suspicious activity. Absolutely not true, I'm not a spammer and I try not to follow them. When I tried to sign in a few minutes later everything was fine. The number of followers didn't change then, though. I just noticed the change now.

If everyone is so freaked out about the spam followers and are so seemingly unaware of who is following them why don't you protect your updates and get control over your followers in the first place? It's like leaving your front door open and complaining that you're oblivious that a bunch of freeloaders are now crashing on your couch. And being delusional that all these people are your "friends" because you're basing that notion on some arbitrary follower count thinking that you must be that important to follow only to find out that the twitter bouncer has now kicked all the bums out.

I personally didn't have a huge following yet (just under 200), but I did notice a big drop in numbers. I now have under 100 followers. I can't say that I am unhappy about it though. I imagine I may be in the minority here with my opinion on this but I see twitter as a means of socializing, not doing business. I have to say that all these people or companies jamming the system with rapid fire "tweets" about their business or products that they are trying to sell get on my nerves. I use tweet deck and it is constantly flowing with tweets because of these "businesses" jamming you up with their rapid fire tweets. It makes it very difficult to socialize in an environment like that. All of a sudden, going back to a regular ole instant messenger platform doesn't look so bad! Perhaps I'll just use twitter to make the contact and then suggest switching over to something like AIM to avoid the rude ass "businesses".

Another thing I can't understand is why anyone would want to spam or hack a twitter account to begin with? There's no money to be made by doing it, it's a waste of time, there's nothing of any value to earn, so why bother spamming? I've noticed a drop in numbers of about ten followers, but I always knew the numbers were wrong. It's nice to see that Twitter has fixed up the inconsistency, which is a great step forward on their behalf. The only people this will hurt is those who are narcissistic, and were under a false impression that they were heaps popular!

I worked hard for those 60+ followers. Now You cut them in half. Not Happy and I appear to be missing more than the spam. In fact, It wasnt an issue. the fun is chalking up followers. the more I tweet the more I got followed. You just took away one of the incentives to make the effort to tweet. not sure that was smart. I certainly dont want to start over.

I've just been subject to comment theft. I Facebook Connect'd, posted my comment and it consequently vanished off the face of the earth which I discovered by clicking through to the last page of the comments (stupidly not noticing the 'Sort by' drop down which would have made life easier lets face it).

I then thought, I'll connect via Twitter and low and behold my comment appeared, like out of nowhere, resurrected... Mashable Magic!

Well I assume I am the idiot that used socialtoo to autofollow anyone and everyone for whatever reason..... I am not even sure why I did that at this point. Whatever the case, I am thrilled to see my @hhotelconsult account drop a couple hundred to hover around 3200. What's more, my other accounts that are for fun, or RSS for industry news, etc.... are still kickin', informing, and having a fine old time. What a good thing... thanks twitter for cleaning house. Keep it up!

Well I always blocked the offensive OBVIOUS spammers and I had nigh on 200 followers and lost 90 overnight. STILL have some less offensive spammers so it is NOT working. Besides- I am not convinced that the stats are right because according to the count I am only following about 10 less than are following me- erm... I don't THINK so. Perhaps a more effective system for vetting those who JOIN is in order. :)

Yes, the moment I log in my Twitter account an hour ago, I noticed something is not right. But can't explain what's going on. My followings dropped by 200 plus people & followers dropped by about 400 plus people.

No, I lost around 20 Followers, so its not a big deal. But I am sure a lot of this Follower Tools will have some trouble.
I always delete and block the spamers direct when they start to follow me. So I keep my Twitter Account clean.
But I did clean and check my account by my own today and deleted all the accounts in my Following List I am not truly interested in and who werent following me.

If you are interested in the freshest and newest trailers and movienews then follow my twitter account. I post the links and trailers before the director knows that he finished his movie. :)

Wow, I only lost 6! I try to be extremely diligent in figuring out who's real and who isn't. Since my numbers are so similar, I know people probably think I've done one of those things to get more followers, and I haven't. It's not hard to tell who's real.

Didn't see a drop, but 10 new followers landed in one dump in a matter of a minute or two. They all seemed to have just 3 or 4 updates each, 30 to 50 followers, and were following a couple of hundred each. They looked dodgy to me so I blocked the lot. Is this kind of thing common? I've only been tweeting a few weeks.

Delighted to hear this - there's no way spammers should be able to spoil the Twitter experience for the rest of us. I've noticed a slight drop in follower numbers, but not a large one - I usually block the spammers anyway, but must have missed a few.

If you want to, you can help the spammers on their way by using TweetLater's Vet New Followers facility and clicking "Block" each time you see a spam account. For added effect, follow twitbroom and tweet the name (without the "at" sign at the start) of each spam account you find, followed by the hashtag twitspam. Twitbroom's large number of followers will then also block the spammer, and the higher the number of blocks received the faster Twitter kicks them out.

@ev i had 445+ at 1900 EST @ about 2100 i noticed i was down to less than 330 lost like over 115.. some of the followers i have lost are people i knew in my local town.. i don't think all this was a totally perfect flush of bots and spammers.. they fucked this up and now what do we do to regain our followers + or have them informed that I DID NOT BLOCK THEM TWITTER DID?

I use twitter to get other people's tweets who share my same interests. I don't have followers because I don't actually tweet anthing. I just just twitter as a sort of " one stop shop ". I can get all the links to things I'm interested in. I don't tweet myself or have followers, but I also don't appreciate you deleting people I do follow. It's just a pain to have to re-add them.

I have three accounts, one for close friends, a main bulk one and a new one I've been specifally adding spammers too...

My friends one... No losses at all

On my Whale account... I lost 370 bots out of over 10,000
(For this one I but lost few if any 'following' - I vet everyone I add, yes all!)

However, for my "spam" account* which I just started to look for bots - it went UP 400 for 'friend' and UP 700 for following (even after the purge)
*(This is largely manual but automated overnight to overnight)

Seems to me the bots are winning !

Hope I won't have to spend so much time blocking the spammers with the obvious porn-based sites. I'm always afraid they are fishing for my info. And I sincerely hope that the profile pick with "Britney S" (you know the one I mean- VERY GRAPHIC and it isn't really her...) doesn't pop up again when a kid is looking over my shoulder. Yes, it was surprising to see the drop in followers and following. But, I have had other troubling problems with my account. I discovered two days ago that my tweets weren't showing up in the public time line for the last week! I am so grateful to the SOMEONE on the Twitter staff via getsatisfaction.org who helped me yesterday and got most everything working again.

I noticed a drop from about 200 to 160 followers this morning. At first I thought it might be because my followers were starting to get annoyed that a lot of my tweets are really just re-tweets (I'm mostly invested in the #iranelection thread these days but am not in Iran nor Iranian so I rarely have much new to add, I just help spread the word about things that seem important). I just couldn't understand what I could have done yesterday that was any different from the day before, LOL!

So at least I know now that it's not just me ... but, egad, you mean one in five of my followers were just spam bots all along?!

I have not checked this AM but would expect it too. When I have added a person to follow and nothing happens I have clicked 'follow' again and my follow count went up by 2. I checked the support section and this is because multiple databases are at play and it takes some time for them to synchronise information.

I lost over 500 followers, but I'm happy about it! The follower count should realistically reflect TRUE follows rather than autobots and spammers. In the end, the quantity is really pointless in comparison to the quality of real followers anyone has anyway.

I dropped from about 400 down to 200 rapidly, meaning I had about half Spam Bots as Followers! But now I am back up to almost 300, so they sure come back rapidly! Personally I think this is great for Twitter to be doing this, cleaning house so to speak. I couldn't keep up with individually checking and having to block every single Spam/Porn bot, so it helps a great deal for them to do it from their end. And it shows they care about cleaning up their site, which is nice. I hope they make this a regular feature. It sure beats having to do it myself!

If you make your account private and only allow people you WANT, then you shouldn't have spammers "following" in the first place. When I first signed on, I did not know this, after the first couple of weeks, suddenly had all kinds of stupid messages from random people about candles and insects. I locked my account, and now only the 3 people I actually WANT following me - my family - are on my list.

Having twice now logged into Twitter and seen a dramatic drop in Followers I thought we were doing something wrong, upsetting the Twitterati & for 2 Days I was upset & confused, but now I understand. thanks to Masable ..... We appreciate the stand that Twitter has taken in culling the SPAMMERS, we have found that there were alot of Followers for some accounts that hadn't even taken Tweeted a Single Word and with our efforts to be Informative and Constructive they were all falling of deaf ears. We noticed the drop from Monday to Tuesday, We have over 3000 followers @foodandwater but the number dropped in our Tuesday morning monitor by about 30 when normally it would be 20 (or so) higher than the previous day. Since we are so fun to follow, we attributed it to a Tweanup and appreciate the validation, Mashable.

So glad to hear that Twitter is killing the spammers! I manage about 10 accounts for myself and clients, and it's easy to spend an hour a day deleting spam followers. I lost about 10% of followers from my @KathleenHanover account yesterday. One of the client accounts lost about 5%. But good riddance, I say!

I wet from over 7200 to less than 6800 followers. I lost over 450 in an hour. I knew I had received 7spam tweets that were copied from someone I knew was a good accound. The difference was, the picture was slightly different and the name had no number. The spams said that"What kind of song/hairstyle/song/etc are you?. . ." I warned my Tweets not to click on link or RT that kind of tweet. This happened to me when I clicked on a link when I had only about 200 followers and it replicated in my DM box and I had to mannually delete at least 200 DMs to get Twitter to work properly. It kept slowing down and not updating, and Tweetdeck was "exceeded" almost every time logged on. After I deleted the DMs, everythng worked alright. I promised myself not to retweet any links that I haven't checked out first or know they come from a reliable source (i.e.,@mashable). I don't mind losing the followers if they were all spam, but I am just concerned that some are not. This is a good reason to be more vigilant when following people. I like to get my followers one at a time. I thought I was looking them over to determine if they were the kind of people I would want to follow, but evidently it wasn't good enough. I noticed in the last few days that there were lots of "nude" pages, sex pages, filthy language pages. I had been blocking them. I really need to look up who to report these things to. I don't think "social networking" for general the public is meant to be pornographic. Also, I will not suscribe to those "Get 6000 followers a day. . . ." They only add numbers, not value. I love Twitter and my Tweeple. I want to be there to encourage them in whatever they are doing. I want to make a difference in the one place that I feel like I can right now.

My counts aren't that high, so I can count them, and the number I came up with reflects the count. I looked at a few of my friends counts (also not high) and they appear to have gone down as well, but the same thing: many people remain that "look" like spammers. Mainly, these people are following an exorbitant amount of compared to how many actually follow them. How were spammers weeded out? What was the criteria?

It would be great if Twitter immediately suspended accounts that just copy and paste the trending topics into a message.

Trending topics is one of Twitter's best features, but a lot of the time I have to scroll through pages of idiots writing empty messages about the topic. Guess it's only a matter of time before Twitter solves it.

I lost around 250 followers on 7.19. My following count was not affected. My feedback for Twitter is to figure out a way to let us know what's going on before it happens so we're aware, perhaps by posting something on the home page (such as when they are doing maintenance updates). I could not find an explanation for what had happened on Twitter "help," so I sent a note to customer service the day it happened. I received an answer the next day, but it didn't answer the question of what had happened; they only provided a lot of links which had nothing to do with my question. It was through speaking with others on Twitter that I had discovered that Twitter was going through a "cleansing" of spammers. They can avoid a lot of future complaints/questions/emails if they provide some advance warning in the future.

Being a twitter spammer has to be the most unrewarding occupation possible though, adding hundreds of people manually only to get a couple add you back, and those who do probably don't even check their account very often! I'm glad to see Twitter fix this. Twitter sometimes acts as if a "Follow" did not occur, offering a user a second chance to click Follow. The net result is that the account is eventually followed but the the "Following" account goes up for each click on "Follow". I had one new client who only had 7 people she was following but her account showed 11 for "Following". This morning it was fixed.

I believe many non-spammers will also be affected in the process.

My twitter account was suspended and never got a clear answer or reason. I am not an spammer and feel that the suspension was wrong. There should be a better forum to resolve these issues. The current format does not provide clear solutions.

When you have large amounts of data and you manipulate this data, such as in the case of removing potential spammers, there is room for errors. Many accounts can be wrongfully suspended.

Most companies offer several methods to resolve customer issues. It is hard to believe that twitter only offers one and what they do is refer you to the terms and conditions and ask you to find the reason for the suspension. There are 12 reasons under the T&C for account suspension. I reviewed my stream and I did not break any of those rules.

Six months of work, networking and time evaporated when twitter removed all followers and the people I was following from my account. I am an entrepreneur at hard and will start again but want to ask the community for the creation of a more precise and clear "twitter account suspension" process.

I am pretty new to Twitter. Actually, I am relatively new to all forms of social networking outside of basic email and having my Blackberry surgically attached to my hip. I am still quite green to the twittering scene and I do not understand a lot of the navigational part of Twitter but, I have really come to enjoy Twitter and find it to be a fantastic tool. I try to be good about blocking the spam accounts, but if they don't bother me, I don't normally pay attention. The only reason I pay any attention to how many followers I have in the first place is that my Twitter client auto-shows the count.

I lost a little over 300 of my roughly 7600 followers. Surprisingly, the web-based apps I use reported the new numbers days before they appeared on my Twitter profile. Initially, I was annoyed because noone could explain the significant difference between what Twitter was reporting and the numbers other sources were reporting.

As always, Mashable is right there with the information I need. That's why I'm your #1 groupie (or would that make me a "Mashie"?).

Hopefully Twitter will do these spam/bot sweeps more frequently.

Yes I definitely noticed a drop! I wondering what I'd done...but thanks to your post now I know what happened. I only lost about 30 "followers" though so that's not too bad.

Yeah, I noticed a drop on all three Twitter accounts I work with. My first account had been a victim of a follow/follow back policy but I corrected that some time back and am far more selective now. I lost about 5% of my 900 or so followers and 2-3% of my followings.

Social networking is still relatively new and many of us are still learning as we go along so it will be interesting how the spammers will respond to the new systems Twitter are putting in place.

Apparently, I still have my real followers...as far as I can tell, but have dropped about 6% from yesterday total. I can't verify this, but it seems about right given the number of spammers who follow me.

Still not sure I care whether spammers follow me...I don't follow back, and can't tell how someone following me can do me harm....

Otherwise just chiming in on the story.

Can someone please help? Does anyone read this? I lost approximately 22,000 followers last night. They were not all spammers. There were many legitimate contacts I had made over the previous 8 months. I've been working very hard building a brand and adding value to the twitter community from a Christian perspective. I opened a ticket with twitter and have yet to hear from them. All I can say is "Help." Can someone please offer me the courtesy of an explanation? Would this have been put up with if it was @aplusk or @oprah or @guykawasaki? Thank you for allowing me to air my frustration. It is not intended to offend. I didn't see anything but I want. Its true since some months ago I have to "clean" my followers / follow because I saw many "strangers" on my count. Hope Twitter change soon this problem.

I expect fluctuations in numbers every day. The "number grabbers" or people who force their numbers love to make following and unfollowing into a "science". It is all smoke and mirrors. Blocking spammers and playing the follow game is hard work and I choose to use my time effectively and let them be. I am very happy for Twitter to do a purge especially if it means there are less "fail whales" as a result.

Noticed about 90 drops overnight and yes I am glad because I can't stand these Spammers.
I still think that Twitter can do more to fight the spammers by having a system such as Facebook that when someone adds you, they first need to be approved before they can become your friend or follower.
This will help reduce spam on Twitter and keep followers list clean.
What do you think is the best way for fight Spammers on Twitter ?

Ironically, since Twitter purged their lists, I have seen an upsurge of spam "friends".
Could it be they're grabbing my account from this list??

I noticed a slight change on my accounts but I'm pretty consistent about blocking questionable accounts so perhaps that's why I didn't notice much difference.

Also, the phrase "Twitter Spammer" can be defined differently depending on who is making the definition. What is your definition of a "Twitter Spammer" and, more importantly, what specific rules are you putting into your programming to purge Twitter Spammers? If you're going to be dropping people off of my list, I'd like to know the criteria you're using. Thanks!

I have recently had sordid followers suddenly added to my followers list where I did not get the email alert that they are following me. Obviously when I look and see that I am being invited by weirdos to weird urls -- I block them. I was enjoying using twitter but the appearance of these 'spammers' on my following list without my prior knowledge list is disconcerting. Anything Twitter can do to make it difficult for these spammers I applaud and support.

I lost about 70 followers. I usually go through and block spammers when I find them. I also block anyone who's top tweet is something like "I got more followers in one day using this site." This means to me that they don't really want follow me but have me follow them.

I try to keep my twitter limited to who I am looking to connect with - Artists! But it is so hard to figure out who is spam or a real follower.

Keep getting emails that I have followers then I go to check on my followers page. Nada. WTH? This is really discouraging! I haven't lost any and I've got plenty of spammers. People that every few hours tweet the same crap about some get rich quick scheme down to the url and amount or whatever the latest way to up your followers by the hundreds - for free! - is. Fortunately, I've missed most of the porn bots.

I lost 54 followers today. I'm down to zero. And I have like more than 50 that have started following me just in the last 3 days. I should have over 100. On Saturday, I had 68. I just started twittering this handle on Thursday. I'm extremely frustrated. What did I do wrong? What happen? I am writing about charter schools and following people who talk about charter schools.

I received an email at 6:55 saying someone was following me. What can i do? This doesn't make sense. I'm floored.

That,s a very hopeful question of you, but can't help you at the moment, because i still don't have the answers! Maybe the only possible answer i have, that Twitter have difficulties with the data/storage and try to find solutions,through cleaning the different lists of followers.
Many people has maybe to much spam in their lists and disturb the storage!
That,s my analyses at the moment!!

why has it been so difficult for people to simply block spammers? obviously people want as many followers as possible even if they're not real. Social networking doesn't reveal the way people really are, it only reveals how people want to be seen...and twitter has revealed how false people can be.
