As much as I want to say that this newest feature is a nice thing, I can already see the potential for it to be abused and used as a weapon against others. Especially using it as a weapon to silence opposition or one's own opinion.One has to wonder what took Twitter so long to [attempt to] do something about the spam robots? I don't think it will stop the spam drones. Spammers always manage to get around filtering obstacles. It's like trying to get rid of a roach nest...

great step in the right direction. i love it. the funny part is verified accounts of celebrities also can be reported. ;)

One has to wonder what took Twitter so long to [attempt to] do something about the spam robots? I don't think it will stop the spam drones. Spammers always manage to get around filtering obstacles. It's like trying to get rid of a roach nest.

I guess it could work like the spam filter at Google. You look for certain words (viagra et al) and behaviors (links to spammy sites) while also taking users votes in account. As long as you don't have to prove you're innocent everything should be allright.

Who decides what is "really spam"? A button at the top of this article shows it has been re-tweeted 1100 times. What is the difference between someone tweeting this link 1000 times, and Mashable enlisting it readers to tweet it 1000 times for them?

Have to agree. Appreciate Mashable has to make money, but there is a line where ads start interfering with usability and these are crossing it.

Oh, I can see the ABUSE in this already. Much like passing non-existing legislation that affects every man and woman's wallet - with the exception of people who cant read like Kerry and the rest of Congress and, of course, Obama who'd NEVER EVER put his kids and wife on a health care plan as absurd as he's offering the SLOBS down here. So now we can report spammers to our hearts content..... great.

If you accidentally click "report spam" you have the option, almost immediately, of undoing that action. So mistakes can be fixed very easily.

Oh on top of that, I wish twitter would add "Select All" button on DM's so I can chose which one to un-select.

With account as big as mine I get 20-30 DM's on daily basis if not even more , 20% of them are spam!

Some of the API tools like Tweetdeck have been doing this already, a one-click function that blocks the spammer from their page and generates a DM to @spam. Nice to see this shortcut made official

Only thing spam is good for is Dog meat. This is a good thing, what makes people think that spam will actually work.
