Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter Adds a Report Spam Option

  • Facebook User · 1 month ago
This will become an ugly situation. What if, in spite, a group of people decide to come together against someone they do not like and report them as spam. Is there someone at Twitter HQ monitoring all of these claims? We'll see what happens...
  • CJChase95 · 1 month ago
yeah twitter analyzes the spam account and tests it against its list of spam characteristics....it only gets suspended if it's really spam
  • CJChase95 · 1 month ago
I've already reported like 100 people now. EVERYONE DO YOUR PART!
  • LeftOfSean · 1 month ago
I have a nice idea. Why doesn't Mashable take some advice from Twitter and dump those horrible dropdown ads WE have to deal with every time we hit this site?
  • Luke, Reach Students · 1 month ago
Have to agree. Appreciate Mashable has to make money, but there is a line where ads start interfering with usability and these are crossing it.

    This could get ugly...

    Best news since sliced bread!

Reporting spam wasn't all that public, Twitter preferred DMs to @replies. But this is how it should have always been, much cleaner.
  • Adam Ostrow · 1 month ago
err that's what I meant, updated, thx
  • Andrew · 1 month ago
"it will immediately block the user", block the user from the person reporting the spam or block the user from twitter?
  • Adam Ostrow · 1 month ago
block them from following you ... like Twitter's current block feature.
  • CJChase95 · 1 month ago
Block the user from following you...then report it to Twitter HQ

A community powered spam reporting system just like craigslist, I like it :)
  • Bart Hoekstra · 1 month ago
This is simply awesome. Have been waiting for this functionality since it was built-in in TweetDeck. Now I can even report spammers when I don't have Tweetdeck with me. Really nice!

    immediately block?
what if it was clicked by mistake or because one of those #mileycomeback kids are pissed cause i wrote #mileygoaway?

do they forget that 12 year olds are on twitter too?
  • CJChase95 · 1 month ago
not block as in suspend but block as in stop that person from seeing you at all on twitter
  • Christine Case · 1 month ago
If you accidentally click "report spam" you have the option, almost immediately, of undoing that action. So mistakes can be fixed very easily.

This is an improvement, but it will take much more than that to wipe out the bots.
  • Roezer · 1 month ago

  • CJChase95 · 1 month ago

  • Chelsea · 1 month ago

  • Chris · 1 month ago
Good to see this is added. Cleans Twitter up nicely.
  • Robert Bravery · 1 month ago
Only thing spam is good for is Dog meat. This is a good thing, what makes people think that spam will actually work.
Perhaps is does, else they wouldn't keep doing it, would they?
  • Ryan · 1 month ago
Awesome. This will save everybody a great deal of time and energy in deleting spammer accounts. Everybody should do their part though. See it, report it.
  • Patrick Plante · 1 month ago
Some of the API tools like Tweetdeck have been doing this already, a one-click function that blocks the spammer from their page and generates a DM to @spam. Nice to see this shortcut made official
  • @JoeHobot · 1 month ago
    Best feature on Twitter!

Oh on top of that, I wish twitter would add "Select All" button on DM's so I can chose which one to un-select.

With account as big as mine I get 20-30 DM's on daily basis if not even more , 20% of them are spam!
  • MirPrint · 1 month ago
    Thank god!
  • Ryan Lalonde · 1 month ago
From now on I'll be reporting a lot of spam because a lot of spam bots follow me. Aha.
  • tuxme2 · 1 month ago
    OH THANK YOU TWITTER!!!!!
  • mike · 1 month ago
Oh, I can see the ABUSE in this already. Much like passing non-existing legislation that affects every man and woman's wallet - with the exception of people who cant read like Kerry and the rest of Congress and, of course, Obama who'd NEVER EVER put his kids and wife on a health care plan as absurd as he's offering the SLOBS down here. So now we can report spammers to our hearts content..... great.

I'm glad to see Twitter is cleaning up it's image.

@ Carter Case: "....it only gets suspended if it's really spam"

Who decides what is "really spam"? A button at the top of this article shows it has been re-tweeted 1100 times. What is the difference between someone tweeting this link 1000 times, and Mashable enlisting it readers to tweet it 1000 times for them?
  • bluefinch604 · 1 month ago
Good! There are FAR too many spammers on Twitter.
  • George Demetriades · 1 month ago
    Go get them boys !
  • killerfiller · 1 month ago
i've reported 200 spammers. peeps dont sign up with http://www.tweeterspeed.com/
  • D. · 1 month ago
I guess it could work like the spam filter at Google. You look for certain words (viagra et al) and behaviors (links to spammy sites) while also taking users votes in account. As long as you don't have to prove you're innocent everything should be allright.
  • cb on bonanzle · 1 month ago
As much as I want to say that this newest feature is a nice thing, I can already see the potential for it to be abused and used as a weapon against others. Especially using it as a weapon to silence opposition or one's own opinion.

One has to wonder what took Twitter so long to [attempt to] do something about the spam robots? I don't think it will stop the spam drones. Spammers always manage to get around filtering obstacles. It's like trying to get rid of a roach nest.
