Yes, mine did also. [As well, I noticed 11-12 of the folks I follow also had bird silhouettes]. In my case I tried replacing my photo only to keep being told "problem with picture; it's probably too big" [It's not - 1/7th the allowed size], but a smaller one with the same error message loaded. However, green & 9/11 band are gone.

If the avatar was a different graphic I would be more drawn to think that it was maliciously done by a user, however if you notice the new style of the Twitter bird matches up with the new 'suspended account' page this tells me it's just their way of testing out the design without interrupting the system. Twitter servers still seem to be having trouble even before this issue was realised. In most cases the website doesn't load instantly and requires a refresh.

This happened about three months ago. I lost my avatar and background image for most of one night, but they both came back on their own. Twitter may not be the most stable, but at least when they're finished playing, they always put things back where they were.

Weird, no problem for my account. At least the new Twitter icons are really pretty.

Some of my followers' avatar have been replaced by those birds, I hope this bug doesn't affect my account, since my account was hacked two weeks ago, I changed my password and it seems it took care of it, but I hope this bug doesn't mess up my account.

It's funny this should happen as I've been working on a little project for a few days because I don't think we should have to maintain our profile pictures in multiple places, we should maintain them in one and all other services should get our avatar/profile images form there. Gravatar (http://www.gravatar.com) provide just this service but unfortunately quite a lot of service providers don't support Gravatar.
Warning: plug... So, I've written a web app that allows you to update your social media service profile with your Gravatar. It only supports Twitter at the moment but I'll add other services if it proves popular. It also doesn't automatically update your social media profile if you update your Gravatar but I plan to add this functionality.
I've unsurprisingly named the service GetGravatar (http://getgravatar.com). Give it a go and please give me some feedback. Hopefully services will natively support Gravatar in the not too distant future but until then we'll need these sorts of services to make our life a little easier.
also lost both avatar and custom bg, but i agree that these are better default avatars! the old brown one was sooo boring! Or maybe it should be boring so people actually change them again! :-)
