Third party Twitter application developers can use the service of Tweetimag.es to make sure avatars display properly.

I prefer the "o_O" one as you could tell spammers and other useless twitter accounts much faster than with the new "birdie."

If someone had "o_O" and they posted more than 100 tweets they almost always were spammers.

Ok, I agree the new default avatars are much nicer. But why would Twitter wipe out an otherwise good photo avatar mid-day on me to the new default? #Fail

I don't know that I'd say a poor decision, though I do agree it served a great purpose. The amount of people who upload a picture to avoid having that ugly thing on their page must be huge. Even so, maybe this will be good. Maybe people who didn't want to bother with uploading a picture stopped using the site, and perhaps those are the people they're trying to affect with this change. Just a random thought...

Good way to describe it! I hate that ugly avatar more than I hate Kayne West... wait... maybe not. But it seriously changes my mind about adding people with the default avatar. I didn't want that ugly thing to show up on my profile page!

The avatar does make a difference. To follow or not to follow -- if someone used the original Twitter avatar on their profile, they immediately were eliminated as someone I wanted to follow. I like the Twitter bird better.

Less-than-beautiful default user avatars are often that way by design – they encourage the user to upload their own.

Seconded. The old brown 'wtf?' avatar served a necessary purpose - encouraging users to upload their own. Changing it was a poor decision.
