Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Twitter’s Default Avatar No Longer Smacked By the Ugly Stick

  • Ed! · 2 months ago
but maybe being awful was a good idea...
that way maybe more people would upload an avatar because the default is ugly...
  • CannonGod · 2 months ago
Seconded. The old brown 'wtf?' avatar served a necessary purpose - encouraging users to upload their own. Changing it was a poor decision.
  • Noah · 2 months ago
I don't know that I'd say a poor decision, though I do agree it served a great purpose. The amount of people who upload a picture to avoid having that ugly thing on their page must be huge. Even so, maybe this will be good. Maybe people who didn't want to bother with uploading a picture stopped using the site, and perhaps those are the people they're trying to affect with this change. Just a random thought...

I think you nailed it Ed!

I remember seeing this a while back, with regards to an even uglier default: http://www.moreperfectmarket.com/2008/12/dick-c...

Haha, this is true. The new default avs are so pretty that when I saw the story about avatars getting accidentally replaced with the new ones it didn't seem like such a big deal.
  • Michael Hart · 2 months ago
I actually quite liked the old one.
  • Luke, Reach Students · 2 months ago
That avatar was a good quick way of spotting someone not to follow.
  • Joanne Glasspoole · 2 months ago
The avatar does make a difference. To follow or not to follow -- if someone used the original Twitter avatar on their profile, they immediately were eliminated as someone I wanted to follow. I like the Twitter bird better.

I'll kinda miss it. It was pretty fugly.
  • Avik Nandy · 2 months ago
    Slow news day, eh?
  • Nielle · 2 months ago
It's about time! SO much better!
  • Karen Bartleson · 2 months ago
Was that ugly avatar supposed to be a face? I always thought it looked like a roll of film. Glad it's gone!
  • Ren · 2 months ago
Aw, I actually kind of liked that silly old emoticon. But the new ones are quite nice.
  • Kriselle Laran · 2 months ago
I like this title more than I care about the new avatar. :)
  • John Fredrickson · 2 months ago
Hehe, you're description of the old default avatar is perfect.
  • unveiled · 2 months ago
I agree with tweetamar, I will kinda miss it.
  • Sara · 2 months ago
I love the new avatar. I kinda want to take away my headshot so I can have the new one instead.
  • Joanne Glasspoole · 2 months ago
I was thinking the same thing :)
  • Kahlil Lechelt · 2 months ago
How are those changes subtle? They basically made half a relaunch.
  • Brandon_Sheley · 2 months ago
    about time Twitter
  • Dwayne · 2 months ago
Less-than-beautiful default user avatars are often that way by design – they encourage the user to upload their own.

I'm going to miss ol buggy eyes
  • dees17 · 2 months ago
"Stare into its creepy blue eyes, and you might suddenly find your soul missing."

Good way to describe it! I hate that ugly avatar more than I hate Kayne West... wait... maybe not. But it seriously changes my mind about adding people with the default avatar. I didn't want that ugly thing to show up on my profile page!

...I'll let you get back to Mashable in sec...But Twitter had the best Ugliest avatar on the web..
  • Bradj47 · 2 months ago
    I really don't care.
  • Calvin · 2 months ago
Didn't like the old one but I found it amusing.
  • davereinhardt · 2 months ago
I'm seeing the new twitter avatar in different shades. Any idea if the colours are meaningful?
  • Claire Flanagan · 2 months ago
Ok, I agree the new default avatars are much nicer. But why would Twitter wipe out an otherwise good photo avatar mid-day on me to the new default? #Fail
  • RAD Moose · 2 months ago
I prefer the "o_O" one as you could tell spammers and other useless twitter accounts much faster than with the new "birdie."

If someone had "o_O" and they posted more than 100 tweets they almost always were spammers.
  • Sandeep Swaminathan · 2 months ago
@RAD Moose I totally agree with you. In memory of the ol twitter buggy eyes I'm planning to get a @thinkgeek t-shirt :D

Third party Twitter application developers can use the service of Tweetimag.es to make sure avatars display properly.

I found a site that gives away free twitter avatars
