Mashable - The Social Media Guide: Tumblr Submissions: Create Your Own Community-Powered Blog

I've been pondering building a tumblr site for a while and this new feature is seriously putting me close to the "START" button being pushed. I think it's a great idea and will definitely help tumblr gain a foothold in the market where people want to start sites run on peoples submissions.

This looks like @FriendFeed's Groups feature, which allows submissions by group subscribers. Of course, FriendFeed lacks the blog customization that Tumblr does, but as a sharing platform it's about the same or better

This is a fantastic addition to an already wonderful service. If tumblr was able to integrate seamlessly to third party applications in a similar way to twitter, then I think it would gain significantly more users quite rapidly.

Could it be the service that kills Wordpress?

Community blogging sounds like a solution to "writer's block"... but wouldn't it involve some sort of quality measurements and content monitoring/approval...?

The blog owner is still responsible for the quality and content of the blog...

As much as micro-blogging sites are handy, they're still akin to trying to live on lollies. There's nothing quite like some hand-crafted prose and thoughtful reflection. And that's something Twitter will never deliver.

I currently feature contributors on my blog MoreThanMary.com and I can tell you, it's not as easy as it sounds. My readers expect a certain quality of content, requiring the writers to have experience within an industry and an interesting perspective. Writing for a blog means selecting the most compelling components of a story to make a post "potent." Unexperienced bloggers usually like to recount every detail which bores the average reader with an attention span of 2 minutes per page.

If we're blogging puppy pictures, the more the merrier. But I would be cautious to let people contribute without editing their submissions first.
