They've already been taken to court in Sweeden, and they've emerged mostly unscathed. Perhaps they're feeling lucky?
  • Ryan · 8 months ago
I'm under the impression the ruling isn't even in yet.
  • Norwegian · 8 months ago
It isn't, and won't be until 17th of April.
  • Ben Parr · 8 months ago
My bad. I gues they're just tempting fate then.
  • Rishi Talreja · 8 months ago
What's the point but? People can already share through FB's very own bookmarklet, can't they? Just because they included it in the site makes them justifiable?

If the RIAA wants to make themselves look really bad in front of millions of users (mostly their own audience) then they should have at it.
  • zohaibusman · 8 months ago
Only RIAA ?? Facebook is going to monitored by security agencies also. Now Pirate Bay wants the support of Users on Facebook. Copyrights World war gonna start soon
  • Bas · 8 months ago
I believe Facebook will try to filter it... but I'm sure they have a big legal team themselves and they don't want to be spending so much time on the never-ending copyright wars.

I hope that we can still share files with Facebook. I post my bandcamp files, my own compositions, with my friends on facebook. I like doing that, I hope it continues. I also do hope that record companies find a way to fight this illegal file sharing. I know things are changing, but artists should get paid for the work they do.
  • Carey Miller · 8 months ago
I completely agree that the artists should be paid for their work That is not the issue. The issue is whether the labels and artists should be living in massive mansions or in regular sized homes.

Be careful I always wanted to be caught so i could sue the RIAA on racial discrimination. They only sue white people. Think about it. All the rap hip hop mp3 music on hard drives and dvd's is still being sold on ebay and CL. Heavens forbid you sell mp3s of the stones doors or even coldplay.
  • Ray Beckerman · 8 months ago
You're wrong about that Richard, many of the defendants have been black.
  • Richard Allen · 8 months ago
    Ray:

It will be interesting for them to Prove they sue people in Gary IN, Harlem, Bed Sty, Far Rockaway, south central, liberty city, how about the 9th ward in New Orleans. I'll bet the answer is no we let "those" people get away with stealing music. We don't want to deal with Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson!!!!

Its also bad for the DJ business because they undercut is legal dj's in price......So Its all about proof, and you can still buy hard drives full of rap hip hop all the remixes on ebay, and of course CL.

I'm wondering how many Facebook users are going to share torrents so openly? Considering your profile shows your real name, and probably some of your location and contact info too, you'd be asking the lawyers to come after you, no?

Also, I'm pretty sure that such links will fall foul of Facebook's existing Terms Of Service too, so Facebook itself is covered in the event they find out about it.
  • BrianMojo · 8 months ago
Finally someone speaking some sense. If these links truly are illegal to link to (are they?) then the RIAA or whoever would simply come after the users who post them, considering it's pretty remarkably easy to trace Facebook users back to a real person. I don't see this being much of a problem for Facebook at all.
  • Facebook User · 8 months ago
FB will chicken out and ban/block this as soon as any of the big organizations starts yelling. I big nasty lawsuit is hardly what they're looking for these days.
  • MonTemplar · 8 months ago
I am pretty sure the existing Terms Of Service allow them to take down such links. No chickening out required. And their external linking system could probably sniff out torrent sites, even if someone used a URL-shortening service to try and hide it.

RIAA should re evaluate the trends and for get the past and move onto the new world. This bulling approach has no value within social networking and Pirate Bay should have the ability to promote their service as any other service that provides links on Facebook. The content is not owned by RIAA its owned by the users. This is the new world.

LOL all I can say is this is awesome. Pirate Bay rocks!
  • froggertv · 8 months ago
Pirate bay rocks, and i think even facebook has a problem with it, who cares about it.

You're operating from a fundamentally incorrect (and possibly willfully clueless) assumption here. Links to torrents aren't illegal. It's just as illegal to post a link to a torrent as it is to describe the location of a murder.

Peer-to-peer (not the same thing as P2P) file sharing/streaming is going on all the time, all throughout the Internet - between HUBS, ISPs, webhosts, DNS servers, college laboratories, OMG! Get over it, DMCA/RIAA need serious overhaul.
  • Jared O'Toole · 8 months ago
This will definitely bring up some issues. I can't imagine this being allowed to go on for a long time. Whether pressure is put on pirate bay or facebook to block this I'm sure something will happen.
  • Ryan Dinkelman · 8 months ago
Hey Ben! You've been slashdotted! ...which I'm sure you know by now. Did you know that a sister of yours is living next door to me these days!? Crazy, I know! Glad to see you get some exposure, and I hope you are reading your comments! Great tunes, great times, that year in 2001. Glad to see you're doing well!

This was news? you've been able to share links on facebook for ages. so the actual news is that pirate bay have added a "share on fb" button on their website? wooooo.

need to have software installed to download torrents anway, what about the people who share links to mp3's and other such copyrighted stuff on facebook which dont require any additional software, is that more of a "threat"?

While I am a fervant critic of the music industry's refusal to do business that offers customers value for money, I would urge people not to share torrents of Facebook. This gives the RIAA ammunition to go after you. Don't let pirate bay use you, no matter how valueable you find their service.
  • Richard Allen · 8 months ago
Only if you are WHITE....black people will be able to do it and never be bothered with some stupid silly lawsuit...mark my words. It's an explosive defense.
