With AR apps coming out, you know what sucks? Being the owner of a "normal" iPhone 3G.

First we had the digital divide, now we have the iPhone divide?

Seriously, this kind of thing makes me want to switch to Android, hefty termination fees and headaches with switching- again- aside...the Droid looks pretty nice though:P

Any phone with GPS+Compass+Camera and a 3G/WiFi connection has the ability to do it. But currently its only based on phones like the iPhone 3Gs and phones like HTC's higher end Android models.

Since AR is still highly experimental and a bit rough round the edges, it'll be likely that this will remain the case for a while.

Well thats basically it in a nutshell, sort of. The fact that its realtime and follows your bearings and the direction you are facing and can provide instant feedback based on those, makes it a much more interesting proposition than what you describe.

Google Earth/Windows Live do not provide this sort of system. The only things close to it are other GPS systems and Google maps Streetview (on location based AR systems). But neither of these provide the conveinience of augmented reality.

Do some research on AR, it really is fascinating stuff and goes way beyond smartphone Applications.

I love this tech on the surface, but do the hardware limitations/inaccuracies as it pertains to civilian GPS and the iPhone's Compass bother anyone else (as it pertains the real experience consumers will have with these apps)?

An intriguing new category of software but Layar doesn't work for me yet.
