An intriguing new category of software but Layar doesn't work for me yet.
  • Lazy · 3 months ago
Layar for android is amazing! I love that it is some many different augmented reality apps in one.

Great technology. Here is another amazing example to add to your list, used by the Denver PD, demo-ed at the Where5280 Camp. Posted by Glen Letham - http://blog.gisuser.com/?p=4935

Why on earth haven't you included this *fantastic* AR app?:
_New "cup 'o' tea" Augmented Reality App_:

    [Heh].

[Cuts down the hype tripe, tho, dunnit?;)]

On a more serious note, most of the apps you've outlined above have been included in this three part series outlining a theoretical framework ["Social Tesseracting"] that explains the relevancy of AR tech:

I'm also maintaining a Augmented Reality Facebook page here:

...that collates a bunch of AR resources.

TAT Augmented ID's cool as hell, I knew how fast these would appear in the mindshare space. Good to know it's now around to play with, to some interesting development vantage points.

    Great roundup. Thanks!

Vow... Impressive. Especially when you see how intricately it is possible to use two simple things - compass and gadget orientation detector. Oh yes, and a camera. moving estimates - moving companies

I love this tech on the surface, but do the hardware limitations/inaccuracies as it pertains to civilian GPS and the iPhone's Compass bother anyone else (as it pertains the real experience consumers will have with these apps)?

I went more in depth into the issues here:

I don't see anything here that lets you see "users and local restaurants in the physical world, even if they are miles away." I only see my camera being used to show me the world it sees and then augments that by layering information on top of the camera display. Showing me things "even if they are miles away" is what Google Earth and Microsoft Live have been doing for years. Either I don't understand what augmented reality is, or the author doesn't.

"I only see my camera being used to show me the world it sees and then augments that by layering information on top of the camera display."

Well thats basically it in a nutshell, sort of. The fact that its realtime and follows your bearings and the direction you are facing and can provide instant feedback based on those, makes it a much more interesting proposition than what you describe.

Google Earth/Windows Live do not provide this sort of system. The only things close to it are other GPS systems and Google maps Streetview (on location based AR systems). But neither of these provide the conveinience of augmented reality.

Do some research on AR, it really is fascinating stuff and goes way beyond smartphone Applications.

Maybe this should be called Top 5 Augmented Reality iPhone Apps [Videos] and one Android app

Hello, Augmented Reality is really interested and useful.
Can you say what phones can actually use this apart from iPhone please?
  • Zenmn · 1 month ago
Any phone with GPS+Compass+Camera and a 3G/WiFi connection has the ability to do it. But currently its only based on phones like the iPhone 3Gs and phones like HTC's higher end Android models.

Since AR is still highly experimental and a bit rough round the edges, it'll be likely that this will remain the case for a while.

With AR apps coming out, you know what sucks? Being the owner of a "normal" iPhone 3G.

First we had the digital divide, now we have the iPhone divide?

Seriously, this kind of thing makes me want to switch to Android, hefty termination fees and headaches with switching- again- aside...the Droid looks pretty nice though:P
