The very act of bring email to a user needs the service provider to read the email. How else does Microsoft filter out spam then? Or maybe Google is able to better filter Spam because their mail reading algorithm is superior.

If Hotmail wants to deliver obtrusive, non-contextual ads with email, that should be their business call. Google, for their part, offers more services as an email provider and that, not privacy, should be the reason for moving to Gmail. Just how much privacy a netizen has is evident from the freedom countries give to their domestic snooping agencies.

Count Rob - You hit the nail on the head. Ballmer has been doing this for years, and it seems as Microsoft falls further and further behind the curve in innovation, he seems to do it more.

Someone really should put a muzzle on him because he just ends up making MS look like buffoons as he constantly insults superior technology and services to what they provide.

If you don't want the Google ads just use an email client, such as Thunderbird, to use Gmail. If you want to make sure they can't read your emails just use a free email encryption plugin... then all they see is gibberish. Cheers, chrisco

Exactly. It's like he thinks the world cares about his stupid opinions just because he works at Microsoft. Ballmer is starting to gain a notorious reputation for bashing everything Microsoft is inferior to... which is just about everything.

I'd say this is an indication the company is starting to fall apart. Microsoft got rid of Bungie today, the company that creates the Halo games. Ballmer is like a pitbull the company turned loose, as a desperate attempt to take back some imaginary market share.

So Hotmail delivers useless ads all the time... that is, if your email gets delivered. Hotmail's blatant email delivery problems are well documented.

Again Ballmer has Google quaking in their boots (with laughter).

This reminds me of Ballmer's comment about Facebook being a fad. It's tough to disagree with him completely about either statement, because there is some truth/relevance to what he's saying, but his delivery always seems so poor. I can't help but think if Steve Jobs had come out and said these things that people would put more weight in the statements - maybe Ballmer should wear more turtlenecks?
