Also we don't need to use IRC like we traditionally used to, why not make your online chat application that use an IRC channel? Or use IRC as a news channel that all your websites feed from.
The beauty and the features of IRC are still unmatched in nearly all IM apps while some advancements have been made to make it more shiny.
Twitter has added the mobile functionality - for all the people never bothering to setup their irc or jabber clients on the phone, but basically the reason why many return is because the rest is still so much in it's infancy.
It is a pity though that all of the apps do not mix both worlds - but then again, it is probably about loosing control when you have your users run on an irc client/ server, they might actually go away from you.
