I know that amazon.com is in compliance with the law. They have done it all legally and I will put up money that they come out from this 'investigation' unscathed. Any takers?

They have not lied to the state of Texas nor any other state where there are amazon.com or subsidiaries operating.

It would be about time that the big companies start paying their dues. This is only fair and their tax evasion schemes are actually killing smaller concurrents.

I really hope this is a justified claim and that something gets done about this.

What it will mean is this:

Say goodbye to the free shipping offers and deep discounts that you've gotten used to as an Amazon shopper. If they take the tax hit, which they will surely bargain down, they will need to offset the charge in the quarter(s) it is paid, so that it is reflected as minimally as possible in their earnings per share. That means things like collecting on their outstanding accounts receivables, but also taking advantage of as much income potential as possible. So "free Super Saver shipping" will disappear, and you probably won't see a discount deeper than 10 or 15 percent until the charges are recouped.

Plus, they will probably close the warehouses in states that collect the highest state sales tax (Texas isn't the only state generating sales-tax issues for Amazon currently). So longer ground shipping times for people in those regions as well.

They'll have to pay a heck of a lot in back taxes and fines if they do indeed have a 'physical presence' in TX. And if it becomes a multi-state affair like the Wal-mart tax evasion scheme a couple of months back, Amazon is going to pay dearly.
