@Ling: It's far from clear whether Internet piracy is a substantial problems for the music or film industry. At least, there are numerous studies that suggest that it's not (and in some cases online "piracy" might actually *help* sales or music and film).

Until the day when the link between online piracy is made between it and and actual, hard, real evidence that artistic output (and not just the bank accounts of highly-paid industry executives) are being hurt, then I say your response it frankly irresponsible in the context of what we are talking about here.

In fact, I hope you will not mind if I call you an asshat.

Umm... this may help protect the emails that nobody uses anymore, but it does NOTHING to protect us from the real problems out there: the companies that collect our data, store it forever, and can be compelled by governments to give it up at any time. The Googles, the Yahoos, the Microsofts, etc., etc. hold so much of our truly personal information nowadays, that getting them to collect less and keep it for much less time is the bigger issue. This encryption technology will do NOTHING to solve that problem.

I'm all for leveling the playing field, but unless the piracy and misuse part of it is brought under control, its a bit futile to talk about privacy. Torrent downloads are double edged swords, and you can't just agree to have all the fun, and not be willing to accept the responsibility.

The European Parliament is about to pass a law that would allow widescale snooping of internet traffic in Europe.

PEP-NET wrote about how participation in law making could avoid such laws and how laws may not have any effect because technology and use patterns are complete ahead of law making.
