I love it. Also mysteriously fixed the "we're sorry this video is no longer available" problem. Coincidence? I doubt it. Whatever they did, it works for me! I'm back in Youtube Heaven!!!!
  • Gisele · 1 year ago
I don't like it at all.
And I wonder if I am the only person on earth who hates widesreen... it's annoying that I am more and more forced to watch video this way only.
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
I'm not thrilled about it, personally, but I'm just one guy.
  • ALEX · 1 year ago
I HATE IT.... AND HOPEFULLY ENOUGH PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN AND THEYL CHANGE IT BACK
  • Ethan · 1 year ago
Chances are if you don't prefer widescreen over fullscreen its because your not aware of the fact that you get 50% more video with 16:9 format. I am of course talking about videos MADE for widescreen not just fullscreen turned into widescreen.

So right now youtube is transitioning so some vids aren't going to look that great but people will make 16:9
  • Josh Budde · 1 year ago
I do not like the new Widescreen, either. They need to have a Preference or Link to switch it back.
  • Nelli · 4 months ago
wow i hate wide screen too. those dumb bars on top and bottom of the sreen are so annoying when im watching a movie, and yet more and more moivies and show are widescreen. :-(
  • Rahul · 1 year ago
Yeah , just noticed it on Youtube and i love it :) , looks great even on a 17 inch CRT :)
  • Korye Logan · 1 year ago
Great News. Now we can finally watch YouTube videos in the same aspect ratio as all our other screens.
  • Nicole · 1 year ago
I noticed *something* was different about the music video I was watching. I don't mind it much; it's kind of nice not having your video cramped to one side.
  • Pat · 1 year ago
Will they change the embeds too? They still seem to be 4x3.
  • Sam · 1 year ago
    THANK YOU YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!
  • GOLDBULL · 1 year ago
yeah.. one day or another this is the step utube should take... i love it....
  • venkat · 1 year ago
This you tube widening will be liked by some you tube and hated by some you tube users ,I have no complaints I liked it.
  • John R · 1 year ago
I dig the new widescreen format. Now that the size is 640x360 instead of 480x360, it has the potential to be true DVD resolution. But I wonder, are new uploads of high definition videos going to actually be 640x360 resolution, or will they continue to be reduced to 480x270 but just upscaled to fit the new player? If that's the case then it's pointless and deceptive. Hmmm, only time will tell I guess.
  • shogo · 1 year ago
This is cool. I don't see why some people don't like it; it's not like you're forced to watch widescreen. It only benefits widescreen clips while keeping 4:3 vids the same size. No more watching squashed movie trailers.
  • Lemming · 1 year ago
    BAD MOVE, YOUTUBE.

Nice to have widescreen format available, but youtube people - CAN'T YOU SET IT SO UPLOADERS CAN *CHOOSE* THEIR FORMAT? Most video is still in 4:3, and it is incredibly lame to be watching all this with pillarboxing. Incredibly, incredibly lame. I would contact youtube if I could find their feedback contact.

(Sorry for all the caps - I'm just mad.)
  • Jeffro · 1 year ago
I was thinking the exact same thing. YOUTUBE GET ON IT!
  • Jeremy · 1 year ago
I think a good option is what Lemming said, the abilty to select 16:9 or 4:3 display. And it would make viewing a much more customizable and enjoyable.

It would affect the layout, but I think it would be fine since the video is the most important aspect of each page.
  • Tom C. · 1 year ago
I can't say I like it either. I'm more used to the standard screen and I like what I'm more used to, and I have a standard-screen monitor. I think Youtube should enable members to change the screen dimensions the same sort of way Myspace enables users to change their domain from the modern format to the original.

    THANK YOU YOUTUBE.good luck
  • robbiebutt · 1 year ago
Today I think i am overly enthused by this. My YouTube usage just went up.
  • Jasoncscs · 1 year ago
Anyone know the best settings for encoding video for the new player?
  • Arjun Dhawan · 1 year ago
About time youtube did something like this!
  • Shannon Nelson · 1 year ago
Looks great on *their* site, but what about those of us who do not have 960 width of space to embed it should we want to use a video in our posts? It still means I have to shrink the size back to what it used to be.
  • Arjun Dhawan · 1 year ago
Yes, thats something they've got to think about every time they change their stuff!
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Not sure about this one. Obviously they're preparing to have the "legit" TV shows ion youtube, and want to present them well.

This will only make the low-quality videos look even worse. But it seems like so many people have good quality equipment anyway, so it won't be that big of a deal?

I agree with those who say the uploaders should have the opportunity to decide.
  • JJ · 1 year ago
    About time...
  • Google SEO Tools · 1 year ago
Finally.... I thought they would never do this. you tube need to innovate more to get it's feet off the ground, and by feef off the ground I don't mean new users, they already have a lot, I mean monetize it.....

@Shannon I am pretty sure the 960 refers to the new site size (page width) not the player itself, that should only be 640
  • Robert · 1 year ago
    I don't like it...
  • sean · 1 year ago
I agree that you should be able to choose ratio, but this is pretty cool. A blu-ray ad in the wide format:

    Sorry YouTube. You fail.

You will not be like Viddler or Hulu. Stop trying to imitate them.
  • Rowan · 1 year ago
I can appreciate the benefits but it HAS to be optional. Like 'see this video in high quality'.
  • gudyrgrev · 1 year ago
this is the worst thing youtube has ever done, now all my favorite videos have a wierd black box around them and it's very unnatractive. people aren't going to know how to make 16:9 format videos or whatever and this black box is going to remain a distraction. it really takes away from the video experience, I swear, if there were any other successful video site, I would ditch youtube and never come back.
  • Kush · 1 year ago
I think its great that not only you can add new videos in 16:9 but videos uploaded in higher quality wide format long before this change happened, automatically plays in all the higher quality wide goodness. (Like most of my videos) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcOi4WZuw58

I'm surprised how a lot of people are resisting change. Why do you want YouTube to be stuck in 2004? If we thought like that we would still be typing commands on a black and white screen to do everything. You'll get used to the new format, trust me!

Maybe those who think it should be an option has a point but if it’s up to me, I'd still make widescreen the default format. After all a lot of new videos made even by ordinary people at home are now in 16:9.
I think this was long overdue.
  • BeenBroughten · 1 year ago
It's ridiculous to be backward thinking. the old 4:3 format is on its way out, and good riddance.
Why have a smaller screen if one doesn't have to? Why have less room when you can have more panoramic space that is closer to how one actually experiences the world than an antiquated box?

As for the stalwarts afraid of everything new, it won't affect you. Now you just have some nice framing around your dinosaur.

I hope they force the 4:3 cowards into this without an option.
  • klork · 1 year ago
aaaaagggghhhhhhh!!!! Change!! I hate Change!!!! How _dare_ YouTube?!?!? This RUINS EVERYTHING!!!!
I'm so confused. First Daddy takes away my Porsche, Now THIS!!! I'm calling my Senator! This is so unfair. Like, I want things the way I know them already!!
  • Jeremy · 1 year ago
This is probably one of the smartest moves they've made.

    And its about time.
  • Tao · 1 year ago
Can't stand it. I could understand it if there were more widescreen videos, but I despise the black bars on the sides of all the other ones. Drives me nuts. There should be a choice for us, because this is ridiculous.
  • aspirepixel · 1 year ago
    NO PILLARBOXING!! Grrrr!!
not to mention the comments look way too wide now too!... YouTube set the standard for video sharing site CSS sizes... c'mon GIVE US A CHOICE while either uploading or viewing!

sigh... guess we're all just a little used to what we're used to.. :O
  • hate u all · 1 year ago
I just cant beleive how many of you are complaining about shit like this. I wonder if any of u had an opinion of america going into a war and if u spoke out about that as u did about widescreen..grrrrr
  • Geoffrey Evans · 1 year ago
Well I'm not complaining about this Widescreen crap.. I just want to watch my videos.. I can care less about how the quality is as long as I can make out whatever the hell I'm watching. Now about those lovely High Definition Black bars on the side of the every video that's not HD..It brings a lot of interest into watching my videos.. (Sarcasm)

O.K all jokes aside, I really don't like this wide screen feature.. It should be a option for people who want to view it that way instead of forcing every user on the damn site to have to bear with it. I mean c'mon, A lot of people were so used to the old video layout and this wide screen features spreads everything out OMG it doesn't look right AT ALL.. that's my opinion.

They should of had a "Toggle Widescreen" button somewhere on the video.. that would be much smarter!!!

  • Andres · 1 year ago
I like it. I think it is great.
  • mediacutts · 1 year ago
YouTube adding widescreen is great for my videos and I don't understand why people are so resistant to changing with the times.
  • Ian · 1 year ago
    Finally! It's about time.

People complaining about this should get their head out of 1984 and buy a real tv/monitor (16:9).
  • adamski · 1 year ago
Great! I think I like this but be good for people to choose I suppose. I like the wide screen. Great for my future video after tutorials http://uk.youtube.com/my_videos?pi=0&ps=20&...
  • doomed151 · 1 year ago
This is a good move. Widescreen = WIN.

Just look at this widescreen video:

I hate this plan! i cant view yotube videos anymore with that wide screen!!I have errors viewing videos now, nothing came out from that screen. change it back!
  • TheNaythanDude2200 · 1 year ago
Well, when I first noticed this widescreen feature, I fainted.
    I was so APPAULED!!!!!!

I tried loads of times to make my vids fit into the player, but no, the attempts failed!!!

But after about one week, I've figured out how to do it, and now I LOVE the new player!

Sure it makes 4:3 vids seem crap, but soon, everyone will be uploading 16:9 vids, but I would agree on the choice of youtube player, it would make everyone happy, but I'd want 16:9 to be the default player.
  • Juan Ortiz · 1 year ago
Now we have widescreen! YES! I blog about youtube widescreen in spanish in my blog. Thenks for the data!.
  • hugh · 1 year ago
It s a good idea but youtube is way too slow now and it sucks. I used to be able to enjoy videos without it havin to load in the midle of a video. Please youtube either change it or giv us the option to pick the screen we want.
  • Jason · 11 months ago
i like the idea but personally i want a choice on whether to switch from normal to widescreen, because for example there are some videos that dont fir the screen atall and its more black screen than video :(
  • Spade86 · 10 months ago
There are millions of pre-existing videos that are now an absolute eyesore in this new format.

For a prefect example of the travesty of this change, check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aFByioqlPE

I could care less about wide screen vs 4:3. The content of the video is the same. People need to stop being so easily hyped and brainwashed.
  • QuiteRiQuite · 5 months ago
Will the widescreen pertain to all computers? On my desk computer (Windows, large, and old), there's widescreen, but not on my laptop.
