Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/01/21/delete-your-myspace-account-day/

  • Sobchak · 1 year ago
None of my less tech savvy friends even have MySpace anymore. I'm not even ranting here but it's way, way, way over.

You should just export your friends list and collect them somewhere else. If they are actually your friends and not +1s then it shouldn't be too hard.

You kinda sound like the thought makes you nervous. Cut the cord MC Rizzn. It's time! You should delete your FB account too.

At this point having either one is sort of like having a mullet. Having both is like sporting a mullet and a Garfield shirt at the same time.

I will respect you in the morning, I promise.

Do it right now! You will feel awesome! I swear!
  • Dustin Coates · 1 year ago
I would join him on his campaign, but MySpace won't let me delete my account. They won't even let me go as far as the Facebook qausi-account deletion.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
All you do is go to settings than on the first page it says Account Cancellation and then you click on Cancel Account. Its not hard :]
  • TheFace · 1 year ago
For whatever reason, MySpace won't actually send you a confirmation/cancelation email. I emailed tech support and they said I have to manually go in and delete all of my stuff (pictures, friends, profile info... everything) and then put in my status or whatever "Delete my account." Are you kidding me? They ask you like 100 times if you want to cancel, then don't send you the email, then make you go in and do all this manual work. I'll join you guys if I have the extra 30 minutes to go in and delete everything.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
I think it has to do with your email b/c I just tried it and it sent to my Yahoo email. fyi I didn't delete my myspace I just wanted to see if it worked.
  • Dustin Coates · 1 year ago
Well the problem is I signed up for MySpace a while back with an e-mail provider that subsequently went under. Last I checked (which hasn't been for a while, admittedly), they wouldn't let me delete without sending an e-mail confirmation. Much like TheFace said.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
Yea thats a good thing. They do it so if someone hacks your myspace the can't delete it unless they can get into your email.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
Whats funny is most of the things he is talking about why he don't like myspace. He can change that myspace has all the spam stuff added now so you don't get any spam. All you have to do is go to your setting and in the last half year the spam has gone down anyways.

About error messages I have not got one for like 2 months. Myspace has stop that from happening. And if facebook had all the people myspace does then it would have just as many error messages.

About #4. You can turn music off so it doesn't play

#6 I hate facebook b/c it look so boring and old. People on myspace likes to do stuff with there pages. And most of them look good if they don't its ok b/c its the person profile they should be able to do whatever they like to it.

#9 You can do it there myspace doesn't look at you page see if you have your email, aim and other stuff on it. I have never heard of myspace delete someone b/c of that. Most people don't even know that you are not allow to.

#10 He doesn't change he picture b/c he doesn't want people to know that its him in real life and he said it works most people don't know that its him b/c he really doesn't look like that anymore.

In all everyone I know has myspace and in the last year myspace has added a lot of new stuff to make it even more better then facebook. And myspace has said there is more to come. :]]

Man, you made a lot of good, heartfelt, reasonable comments, but frankly, you need to brush up on your grammar and spelling. You simply embarrass yourself to add such commentary without regard for proper speech. For example, "there" is NOT "their"..... "then" is NOT "than" ... I won't even GO into your poor use of the English language and punctuation.
  • Sobchak · 1 year ago
What happens when you click 'cancel account' under account settings?

Does it error or 404 on you?
  • CountRob · 1 year ago
Animated-gif backgrounds that crash the browser are the worst part, and everyone seems to have one on their profile.

Every day is "Delete your Facebook" day.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
lmao Well you really can't delete your facebook. They don't let you do that one there.
  • Meghan · 1 year ago
You know, this back and forth about how lame it is to have a profile on MySpace or Facebook actually sounds like a high school cafeteria conversation. It's like, "Let's pounce on that guy for wearing that T-shirt...or that girl for listening to that band." I thought I left all that behind me when moved beyond adolescence. So, this is the future of social media? Elitism and jockeying for position? Doesn't sound very revolutionary to me...
  • Sobchak · 1 year ago
"Doesn't sound very revolutionary to me..."

It's not. Also, you never leave elitism or cliques behind. They're infused into every part of society.

That's why it's a good idea to not take it too seriously and just make fun of everyone on an equal opportunity basis. For instance, the irony of having a FB page about 'int'l delete your ms account day' is lip smackingly delicious.

If you don't enjoy poking fun at that, then you're probably too mature to even be involved in social webborz. They ARE essentially one big virtual high school cafeteria conversation. We're here, we're childish, get used to it.

You can sit at my table though! IF you give me your pudding... otherwise, no deal. ;)

I'm in for deleting my Myspace page. When is delete your Facebook profile day? My feed is full of crap and the applications are getting boring.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
I know facebook is geting bad with all the feeds and applications.
  • Zoooleu · 1 year ago
This is a horrible blog post. For one, it's almost all easily avoidable. Let me go through all the points you have brought up:

    1) Then... delete them or ignore it entirely? Report their account? You can't be that desperate for friends that you can't ignore a few spam accounts, right?

    2) Then stop filling out shit that *nobody* wants to read. Myspace might be hinting you need a life other than posting dozens of surveys.

    3) See my response to point 1.

    4) Why should MySpace get involved? Should I whine to FreeWebs each time I view a user's website only to find loud music automatically playing? Whine to whoever has the automatic playing music in their profile. It isn't too hard to get in contact with the person and tell them you don't appreciate how they have obnoxious music playing when you view their profile.

    5) I've only encountered these when logging in (and at that, only once every 20 times), after that I don't see these at all.

    6) Look at number 4.

    7) Ads are bad? It's another form of income, moron. If you don't like them, then edit your HOSTS file to block the domains the ads are coming from and/or install an ad blocking extension for your web browser, eg. Adblock Plus for Mozilla Firefox.

    8) Having a MySpace won't give other people where you live. It's the user's fault in the end. That person gave personal information over the internet to a complete stranger. Call me a heartless bastard, but if you're going to post your address online, someone with a malicious intention might just make a house trip.

    9) Weren't you just ranting about little girls getting raped/killed/etc.? This almost contradicts the 8th point. What exactly do you think the preteens/younger teenagers with the mindset of "It's perfectly safe on the internet" are going to put up in these areas? If you want to put your stuff online, use the About Me box.

    10) Then get your friends to find some real friends and stop considering Tom as a Top Friend.

There is my $0.02. The reasons listed in your blog entry do not satisfy a need to cancel a MySpace. If you bring up that they're selling email addresses, tracking every move you make on the website, or a horrible exploit, then I'll consider canceling MySpace.

BOMB-MYSPACE DAY - YOUR PERSONAL REVOLUTION

Did you ever know that MySpace is owned by media corporations? Fox
Interactive Media actually gets to make the rules for MySpace, it
practices censorship and secretly seal the mouths of MySpace users. The
continuous censorship of Ron Paul and his supporters is a living
    example.
In essence they take away your freedom of speech!

We are tired of their interventions and alienating policies and we
should not allow to let this go on forever. So now is the right time to
start our own revolution by sending out a powerful message!

Be part of the solution and let’s all collectively drop
MySpace on the 3 february 2008, delete our profiles at MySpace and let
us all join www.FoxySociety.com, to connect with other people socially
without any corporation or media monopoly involved.

The power is in your hands, so spread the word, send this letter to many
(MySpace) friends and let’s act on 3 February 2008!
    Cu @ www.FoxySociety.com

    Boooooooooom

There is a fox in the place
    We all call it MySpace
Are you foxing what I am saying
or are you totally foxed up?

We need to fix the fox
or the fox will fix us.
So get the fox out of there
before you get foxed all over the place

FoxySociety, no place for foxs to be
FoxySociety, is the place for you and me
3 February will be the day
We will boom the fox away.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
lmao after Fox Interactive Media got myspace nothing has change on there. Its has gotten even better after the got myspace. So I don't know what you are talking about. Ron Paul sucks :]
  • hot carl · 1 year ago

  • cold carl · 1 year ago

you going to foxing quick for me to get the fox out of it.

can you explain your comment? or you too foxing retarded to know what you talking about?

I have been trying to delete my Myspace account for the past month. I probably tried the process a total of 6 times. The problem is, I would never receive the confirmation to delete the account in my email. Solution, I changed my email from a Gmail to Yahoo account. I did the account deletion again, and immediately in my Yahoo account was the deletion confirmation.
  • Travis · 1 year ago
Yea its b/c gmail suck. Stuff like that alway happen for me.

    simple solutions:
    1. use firefox, and use ad-blocker.
i've never seen a stupid myspace ad. nada.

    2. set privacy stuff on your profile. people can only ad me if they know my last name (or my email, which is a separate private email just for crap like that, i.e. they can't just 'guess' it.)

    3. automatically delete msgs from anyone you don't know. if it's some old person you used to know and forgot, they'll resend it. otherwise, whatever.

    4. only use it to converse with people who you know, and who actually know how to use it. i tend to avoid profile's i can't read.

for me, myspace has become a staple for keeping in touch with my international friends. it's not that hard to figure it out to your advantage.

click my weebsite to see mine.
  • amywithlemon · 1 year ago
    you are smart indeed.

i have ad block plus and i have no idea what they mean... "'ads'? what are these 'ads'?"

i think most people are just lazy. (oops, did i say that?) as for using it, either use it or don't. but get over making it a big deal enough to complain about.

i hate facebook. i don't want vampire hugs. i don't want to plant anything in your garden, and last i checked you can't send anyone a drink in the 'internets'. i do have one though, for networking, and i (gasp) don't go around complaining and begging people to join me.

as for 'identity' stuff... there are VERY SIMPLE codes you can use to remove all your 'info'. parents should get more involved with what their kids do online. it doesn't take a genuis to figure that out.

So glad everyone has opted to go through the effort rather doing the obvious and NOT go back to the page. Period.. What's so hard about that? Pretentious nonsense.

"that some hoax myspace account has caused a teenager to commit suicide."

Too bad this actually happen you dumb fnck.
It was on all kinds of news channels, INCLUDING The Today Show.

A mother of a teenager made a fake account and started harrassing a girl, leading to the girl's suicide.

    Azzhole.

I tried deleting my account three times in the past month. First I tried because of their affiliation with newscorp, but after i received no confirmation letter to actually delete the thing, I started getting pissed. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, checked my spam folder, and sure enough, no letter of confirmation. So I tried again. This time voicing my concern about privacy rights, no confirmation letter came. I then attempted to cancel again and threatened legal action, still know response. At this point I was really pissed. I started posting anti-myspace posts on my account and convinced many people to delete their accounts through my posts. Finally, I got so fed up I sent this letter to the Admin department:

"I have requested to delete my account three times and have received no email confirmation to finish the deletion. I do not want this account anymore. Originally it was because I found out your connection with Newscorp, but now I feel like you are violating my privacy. This "feeling" intensifies every time I ask to delete my account and each time to no avail. In my last request I threatened legal action, and evidently that does not bother you people. I am giving you one last chance to remove my account from your website and services, otherwise I will be contacting a lawyer as well as my congressman and senators."

This got their attention, within 12 hours my account was deleted for "Violation of Terms of Service". I suppose that was a bit vindictive on their part instead of just admitting their mistake, but hey, I got what I wanted.

So here is the thing to remember people. They want to try and treat you like a number, like a piece of shit. But dont let it happen. Fortunately the threat of legal action and calling you congressman and senators -is- worth a damn. Dont think nothing can be done because you are only one voice. Many solitary voices have moved mountains in this countries history. Although I hardly moved a mountain, I got what I wanted and scarred them enough to get it done in 1/30th of the time it took them to acknowledge me. Threatening to use the legal system is one of our only avenues that the American people can use to let their voice be heard. So use it, and more power to anyone who deletes their account.

I think all the more reason not to use myspace or facebook and just have a blogg you can still keep in full contact with your friends that way...
  • Dances With Books · 1 year ago
Hell, if I had a MySpace page, I'd be deleting it too. In the end, if it works for you, super. But for those who does not, they should be able to delete it without complications. I love the movement idea.

I would LOVE to delete my MYSPACE accounts! The damn thing has no "account settings", or anything else to do this, when I'm logged in and click "HOME" - nothing shows up at all when I click on it. I also cannot delete my picture. I've written to them and they just tell me to use the "account settings", which for some reason does not exist on my account.
    Extremely frustrating.
