Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/05/11/top-10-social-networking-sites-for-women/

  • AskFrasco · 1 year ago
Although these are 10 greats sites it is a bit disappointing that they are only sites that deal with Mothers, Families, or Beauty/Fashion.

I am a woman, and yes I love to shop and plan on having a family one day, but I am also very interested in Business and Social Change.

I would like to see E.Factor on the list. Many women are Entrepreneurs or work from home. http://www.efactor.com - it is a great site for women who are interested in growing their businesses and connecting with others who are business minded.
  • Palin Ningthoujam · 1 year ago
Yes, you are right AskFrasco and we might just do another roundup on career and business oriented social sites for women. We tried to focus more on moms' today.
  • pcmcreative · 1 year ago
Thanks for the link to efactor AskFransco. As a women working in a team of men as the social media developer the male femele platform divide for business perplexes me. I am a member of some women focused applications. I have been invited to but I find it hard to be part of the communities because my most active and productive ones are non gender specific. Are there a hoard of mens social networking sites I am unaware of?
  • Palin Ningthoujam · 1 year ago
Yes there are social networks for dad as well. check out http://www.daddaily.com/
  • AskFrasco · 1 year ago
I understand. Those are some great sites you listed.

Another great site is http://www.gather.com I helped them create a branded page for Oprah's 10 week webcast for A NEW EARTH, by Eckhart Tolle.

    Thanks Stephanie for your comment.
and PCMcreative, you are so right about the perplexity of male/female business and entrepreneurship. Whilst I too love that women are getting up and starting their own businesses more and more, I always maintain that I am an entrepreneur first and woman second. What is important to me is connecting with the right people who can help me drive my businesses, I look at their skills rather then their gender.
That is why on E.Factor - we do pay attention to the connecting of entrepreneurial minds - whereever they may be, whichever gender or whichever race - as a group we have SO MUCH POWER. Every Entrepreneur should tap into that - male or female....
  • Nicole · 1 year ago
    I agree with you AskFrasco.

Another site you may want to check out is www.officearrow.com. This site was created by office professionals for office professionals. It allows you to connect and collaborate with other professionals as well as ask questions and get answers from members who may have experience the same type of work scenario.
  • autumn hawk · 1 year ago
Hey there! your comment just mad me very happy since that is exactly what i am creating now! a website for working, entrupuener, kick ass women!!! i am working with web developers now!!
  • Christi · 8 months ago
These sites are great, but they seem to focus more on articles. Blogs are nice, but they focus on comments. I couldn't really even find a forum where women can just discuss issues with each other. I started a forum, but there just doesn't seem to be anywhere to advertise it. It's all free and even offers anyone to start their own support group.

Networking is just super tough and time consuming. I wonder how many even read all of the articles before leaving a comment. It would be nice if when we have a problem, we could just ask others for advice. Instead, we have to search the internet and read articles hoping that they match our situation. Who has that kind of time?

I really like BabyCenter.com for a lot of the same reasons mentioned for the sites listed above. Thanks for the new resources! :)
  • Palin Ningthoujam · 1 year ago
Yes that's a great site too. If we were doing a top 15, it would sure have come :-)
  • Andrew Goulding · 1 year ago
This post is a fantastic resource for me!

I've created a product which will, I believe, predominantly appeal to single women who wanted to get inside a man's head...and I wondered how to reach them quickly and reasonably cheaply. I had been looking at Facebook (great demographic drill-down capabilities) but these Web 2.0 sites are a different world altogether.

    Now for some serious research.

I agree with AskFrasco. I was excited to see a post focusing on women, but sorely disappointed with the content. This post should be more aptly titled "Top 10 Social Networking Sites for Moms."
  • Palin Ningthoujam · 1 year ago
Watch out this space Rubybeck, we will come up with more.
  • Rubybeck · 1 year ago
    Awesome.
  • Book Lover · 1 year ago
As a Mom myself, some of these are nice-to-knows, but I agree with other posters, social networking sites for Moms, may not necessarily be top sites for all women. One that may be a crossover however, for those that enjoy writing and critical reading in their spare time, is www.scriblist.com. You can either read and rate writing or enter your own fiction to be rated by others, or both. Open to all aged 14+. In the forum, I've met a couple of fellow writing Mums, and had some beneficial comments on my writing as well as the feeding of the under two's.

Thank you for the post! I joined TeamSugar/GeekSugar!
  • Maxi · 1 year ago
Not totally a social network yet but totally women focused-- but www.redplum.com is a really cool site that seems to be moving in that direction except it focuses on deals, and coupons plus a lot of weekly editorial, polls and questions. I think it launched pretty recently -- maybe a couple months old.
  • philippine web designs · 1 year ago
I agree with Glam.com but the forgot to include sk*rt but anyway Ivillage deserves to be on that spot
  • nina · 1 year ago
I would add http://www.webgrrls.com to the list. It is a great organization for Women entrepreneurs.
  • sd · 1 year ago
what about gutwomen.com? it is a fairly new site but the users bring in lots of women focus stuff. A simple UI, but good for anyone to promote women related materials.
  • DvB · 1 year ago
Since Pete Cashmore has honored us with some nice recognition in the past (referenced in a number of posts, http://mashable.com/?s=mothersclick), perhaps you could give MothersClick.com an 'honorable mention' on this post.

As a community and online service dedicated to active moms and their groups, MothersClick was one of the first sites to innovate in this category.

    Thanks for the consideration.

I'm used to men (and yes I am assuming Palin is male, which is a statistically good bet in this industry) compiling websites for women or making websites or products for women and they are always so stereotypical and lack any kind of innovative thinking. The majority of women aren't pre-disposed to having these interests, but tend to develop them much like men need to like sports or play golf. We really don't care what Paris was up to last night and we don't particularly feel like discussing the latest lip gloss, but somehow these are the topics of appropriate light social conversation among females, unfortunately.

I often hear this from male founders: "well our core demographic are females from x to y age and we have all guys on our team...we figure we need a woman." You don't see women inventing new razors or sports wear, why aren't women making these products for themselves the way they want it?
  • Chictopia · 1 year ago
Chictopia.com is another great website for women. It just launched two weeks ago but came in first place at Best Startup Contest held at Moscone center. As far as traffic goes, it's already catching up to Mayasmom!
  • chantelle oliver · 1 year ago
One of my favorite websites for women is Mashable.
  • sofie · 1 year ago
Jump is a great multilingual site for active women in business: http://www.blogjump.eu/
  • Elicia · 1 year ago
Thanks for this list! I agree with many of the above comments - it would be great to see a comprehensive list of sites (not just social networks) for women that cover the variety of interests women have including business. Blog networks for women would also make great additions to the list - such as BlogHer.
  • kayell · 1 year ago
Honestly, what an incredibly limited view of women's interests you must have. I see that above you've said this is geared to mothers, but since the title is "Top 10 Social Networking Sites for Women" it would be nice to see something a bit more inclusive and a lot less stereotypical. Where are the sites for women to talk about politics, or women's issues (are there still any feminists out there?) or how to fix a car (or find a decent mechanic) in a friendly environment?

Here I am, a 50 year old woman with interests in life sciences, hiking, politics, history, feminism, science fiction, vegetarian cooking, and many, many other things, and I find NOT ONE site in your list that makes me even want to waste the click. That's a sad list.

I know this is a rude post. Blame it on my frustration with what I hoped to be an interesting list of possibilities.
  • Daniel · 1 year ago
Not a great site yet but www.Shoplette.com is gaining attention from ladies who love shopping.
  • Idil Cakim · 1 year ago
I would definitely add BlogHer (www.blogher.com) to the mix.
  • Kattar · 1 year ago
(Nice job researching this out Palin!)... why is it, whenever a *Top-10* of anything is listed, digruntled people come out of the woodwork to complain!

@kayell - this list and therefore interest areas were intended for women. Not feminists with mens interests. If thats what your after, go do your own research and quit your complaining.

    (sheesh everyone)

Could you please help inform me of 10 good Man Sites for my husband, perhaps in the Sports and Sex categories?

I was really disapointed to see the list here, because I've never even heard of any of these sites. And after looking through them ALL, was even more disappointed. They were all too "mainstream" for my tatses. I will continue to go to http://www.misfitmoms.com/ which should be on this list IMO. ;)
  • Roberta Speyer · 1 year ago
These are all great resources. we have something a bit different. Obstetrics and gynecology accessable to women everywhere for free. Been around for 12 years but not VC funded so not doing as much PR. But if women have real health concerns, not just advice about the best bathing suit for post baby tummies...we're your man...um...woman.

I echo the sentiments of many of your readers, as I was looking for more career oriented networks, but I am glad that I read all of the comments, I have a very nice list of social networks to check out. So many thanks to the readers who commented and gave their input. I'm a huge believer in social networking, I have made many friends from all walks of life that I exclusively do reciprocal business with.

I'm looking forward to the follow up to this article with career oriented networks for women in business. Thanks so much!

As a singer/songwriter that has built an online health & fitness record label which depends heavily on ease of download use for our customers, social networking is key. What an incredible tool is! Whether it be soliciting potential clients, customers or merely connecting with people of similar interests and passions....it's all about marketing oneself and one's personal ideas....isn't it?
So much of social networking has become a battle grounds of do and don'ts, rules and stopping that potential "spam" artist from rearing it's ugly head. The art of blogging and conditional giving on the internet is something to be mastered. After all, "what is one person's garbage is another one's fortune."
I say "it's all good!" Work for your goal using all the tools at hand. Being a 50 year old mother of 3 kids, learning how to maneuver around the internet and research, connect, this is what we have been taught to do since our early childhood education in the library with those wooden draws holding index cards. Oye!.... Researching, improving, achieving, right?
Shake it up! That's my philosophy! In both body & spirit. After you have worked your mind and powered those finger tips on a keyboard reaching out to those around you, take a few minutes to work that body for your own personal musical health. Stay in touch and reach out to YOU! You deserve it!
As a person who has lost 100 pounds, I write and sing this song for you to walk...run...or simply
"bop on out" right at your computer.
At at tempo of 132 beats per minute, click link below and come on Shake to My Philosophy!

I understand that a large component of a women's life is her family, but really? I understand that this is about mother's day, but at the same time is that all there is, women (like men) are complex beings and are not only defined by motherhood. Yet six out of your tent listed here are related to moms and parenting....makes me wonder does the media think that's all there is?

I'm a step mom, but it's not how I solely define myself.

Nice list... Never heard of Minti,MayasMom, or Team Sugar.... It appears as though the next big break through of the web will be Niche Social Media sites....

I am looking for good / funny video ecards that are either cheap or free. I have two young children and it is so tuff to get to the store just to buy cards. A Friend told me about www.PuppetGreetings.com has anyone ever used this site? Good, she says...I check and it doesn't look bad... but before I give them 4.95 to them for a years membership I just wanted to here another opinion about this video greeting card company. Thanks girls!

What about SocialJane.com? It's a women-only networking site, so it fits perfectly for your list (for women, for social networking). It's a great place to find activity partners and new friendships.
