    this is awesome

im thinking this could rival skype.

So i can call my parents in South Africa from Japan?
what are the fees like? Are they based on your area?

it seems to be 1c per minute from just about everywhere in the US to elsewhere in the world (except India which is 6c). Not sure about other countries to other countries ... sorry for the US-bias :-)

Hey, Verge. Jaxtr again here. You too can get all of the info you need at: http://www.jaxtr.com/user/rates.jsp
Jaxtr is available in 220 countries, including Japan and South Africa. There is a 2 cent connection fee, but I think you'll find the rates are great regardless. Let us know.

I'd also be interested in learning about international rates...looks like a little investigation is required! Although my Chilean cell phone is so expensive in general that it still might not be cheap for me - that's another international complication, a lot of countries still have exorbitant cell rates, not like the US where you have all sorts of unlimited minutes, so this might only make sense for some international users.

    Hey guys,

I'm Alex and I work at Rebtel (surprise surprise, a competitor).

I read this article (good one by the way Adam) and just thought that I had to clarify some things.

The concept of providing users with local numbers has been alive and kicking at Rebtel since 2006. To my best knowledge we have the most competitive rates out of all the VoIP-based companies out there and we manage to do that without any support by advertising or connection fees (Jaxtr actually charge a connection fee of 2 cents for every call).

Although with all things considered, I'm extremely happy that the general VoIP calling behavior is starting to catch on. It's about time :)

Thought you might want to know some additional features beyond cheap calling. When you link your phone to the web with jaxtr, you can forward your calls to any phone linked to your account (mobile, home, office), choose to send specific callers to voicemail and others to your phone, and hide your number should you be using it for social interactions.
