Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/02/19/gmail-antispam-filters-leaking/

  • Arun Vijayan · 1 year ago
Yes. of course. this is happening for the last 2 months in my gmail account.
  • mrshl · 1 year ago
Nope. I've gotten 2 per week the last two weeks, and they appear to be singular mistakes addressed to one of my imported pop accounts.
  • Eran · 1 year ago
Yep a bit more leaking through the cracks. Maybe we are used to something that is too good to be true for long...
  • Frederick Szczepanski · 1 year ago
I thought that it would still filter the message even if it was forwarded...

But I have been getting random spammy e-mails. Before the past two or three weeks, I received maybe two in the past two years that I've had a gmail account... It was disturbing. Hopefully it doesn't explode to dozens like other people...
  • John Ward · 1 year ago
The last 2 months I have been noticing a number of spam messages getting through. I use Google Apps for Your domain.

    Approximately 5-10 per day.
  • Jamie Neary · 1 year ago
I get about 10 spam emails a day on average for my inbox, and 30ish other email in my spam box.
  • John Carson · 1 year ago
I noticed this a few weeks ago, thought the spammers had found a way around Gmail's filter somehow. Only getting one or two a week, no big deal, but like others here I never bothered to check them too readily as the filter up to now has been excellent.
  • The unknown Giant · 1 year ago
I've noticed this too. Since last weekend i'm getting about 2 or 3 spam messages in my inbox per day (and about 15 in my spam folder). Before it were about 2-3 messages a month.
One of my reasons for moving to Gmail was Google's effective spam filter...
Hope this will be fixed soon.
  • will · 1 year ago
    yes definitely.

A couple of weeks ago my GMAIL spam filter (usually virtually perfect) started leaking. In particular Nigeria style banking scam stuff - although mainly non Nigerian versions.)

    Annoying
  • PradaGirl47 · 1 year ago
I'm getting all this nigeria stuff. about 5 a day. it's really annoying. then there's some other spam coming from gmail accounts. this is all new in the last few months. what can we do?
  • Joel · 1 year ago
I've not been getting any spam.

Maybe I'm just unloved by the spammers?
  • Cookiemouse · 1 year ago
So far all my Gmail spam has only turned up in the spam folder. There is a lot more of it though.
  • KB · 1 year ago
only have seen an increase during this past weekend. things seem to be back in order now.
  • Roleplay · 1 year ago
Yes, sadly. It sometimes makes me wonder what they're actually doing for their spam filter, is it really an adaptive algorithm?
  • Edward · 1 year ago
Me too, I have a lot more spam in my junk mail. Thankfully none in my inbox so far...
  • Akash Xavier · 1 year ago
    Yeah guys!
I have been getting lots of spam in my inbox. I was wondering that they are not being filtered automatically. And everytime I click the "report spam" button, I still get such emails. I get them from different domains.... seems to be a big problem... I have spam or my Orkut scrapbook(spam from friends!), spam in my Gmail inbox and its spam everywhere!

I have started hating Orkut too now!
  • _FM · 1 year ago
    leaking

and best thing is, when you send email to another gmail account, and when he reply you, his email is in spam folder.

    are they nuts?
  • SeanFromIT · 1 year ago
My spam doesn't seem to be leaking today, but I have noticed in the past that every once in a while it's like they turn off the spam filter for 3 minutes every few weeks: 3 or 4 spam messages will file into my inbox in a relatively short period of time, and then everything is good again.
  • Steve Poland · 1 year ago
The past 3 months has been spam-mania. The past 3 weeks has been a lot of REAL email going into Spam folder as well.. I have no clue why, maybe because people are clicking tons of stuff as 'report as spam' [because they have so much now in their inbox] and the legit email is going there too, even though it's not.

Whatever the case, I might be going back to SpamArrest, because I can't have "good" email going into my spam folder.

I also wish there was an easier way to report spam -- rather than checking all the boxes.. I want to enable a mode and then just click on messages in inbox and have them 'report to spam'.
  • Joshua Feinberg · 1 year ago
I found a similar "leak" yesterday as well. But I've found the filtering to be generally pretty reliable.... no more than 2-3 leaks a month. I actually find bigger issues with the false positives. I spend 10-15 minutes a week skimming through the bulk folder to make sure nothing got misclassified during the last 7-10 days.
  • Caio Iglesias · 1 year ago
I've been getting those for a long time. I get about 3000 spam mail per month, and they just leak to my inbox on a 3-6 per day basis.
  • sarbarth · 1 year ago
Thanks for taking this step of writing this post.
I have one Gmail account there thousands of spammers are attacking day by day. Why Google don't take any action.
  • LaLindsey · 1 year ago
Same here. Without a doubt gmail has been missing the most obvious of spam messages, and while it hasn't been dozens and dozens for me, it has been about 5-10 a morning (I check so often during the day I couldn't tell you a daily total).

Really, really easy to spot spam messages are getting through, like "so and so software for $15!" or some really, really stupid spam I've been getting from the "beef industry" that I have marked as spam no less than 15-20 times already, and it STILL appears in my inbox (same sender, same basic content in the message). As well as advertisements for sitepal. Marked as spam, still coming to my inbox.

Also, not to mention my spam box has gone from getting roughly 20 messages a day in it to about 400. Can't completely blame that on gmail as who knows where these people got my email address from.
  • Patrick Altoft · 1 year ago
I've been getting a load of spam emails too, just a sign of the times.
  • Random Man · 1 year ago
I have never gotten a single piece of spam on my gmail account, as opposed to yahoo, where I get 50+ daily. And that isnt even counting the bulk folder.
  • Ale Man · 1 year ago
According to the German IT magazine Heise it's actually the Spammers who are changing tactics.
    http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/103711

Seems like they are now using valid Mailservers,
for example. Do you need a translation ?
  • DJDiva · 1 year ago
I have also noticed an increase in spam in my gmail account. Right now my spam folder has 479 messages and I delete my spam folder each week. I have also had spam more and more make it's way to my inbox rather than the spam folder - this never used to happen.
  • TPP · 1 year ago
I don't have that much problems with increased unfiltered spam in my GMail account, but that's probably because I don't use it as much.

However, I've noticed a VERY sharp increase in both the amount of spam and the ineffectiveness of spam filters on my primary email account(s). Much more spam is getting through SpamAssassin and other filters than before.

The change has happened within the last 3 - 5 weeks.
  • M · 1 year ago
Nah, no problems with that so far. Do you think it's actually to do with the age of your inbox. See Ive had my gmail for ages now, but Ive only used it as my primary for less than 2 years. Previously I have never had spam. The only time I got spam was this new year's eve, i think it was because i sent an ecard through 123greetings, which, i am sure, spams. because the first spam i got actually had lovey dovey subjects like MY LOVE of I MISS YOU and shit like that.
  • TroyJMorris · 1 year ago
Yeah, I've been getting 10-15 a week. I blamed the fact I was using that email address in webforms for blogs. Now I just type in garbly gook and hope folks go to my blog to find me.
  • Phil Ayres · 1 year ago
Nope... it's a disaster... I probably get 10-15 a day... no exagerration. I am sick of it!
  • David Berkowitz · 1 year ago
I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary - it's still working well for me.
  • John Bartlett · 1 year ago
I missed a very important email because Gmail put it in my spam folder. When I looked, I found 4 emails over the past week that had been put in Spam that were legit. What's the deal?
  • I Am Bill Power · 1 year ago
I haven't gotten any spam. I switched to Gmail and have an account forwarding to it where I used to get a ton of spam and it made it all disappear!
  • Vitak · 1 year ago
Wow, a lot of people are having serious issues with Gmail spam. I have this problem with my Yahoo! account (150-200 spam emails a day), but not really with my Gmail. I have noticed an increase in the past few weeks though, from maybe 1 spam message every few months to 5-10 spams a week.
  • hunefalk · 1 year ago
My first GMail spam came in the weekend, and the second one came yesterday - and I agree with the feeling of thinking they were legitimate after using the service for a couple of years now. Yahoo mail is a little worse, but after 7-8 years with that mail I'm not surprised. I've had Hotmail since the year after it first came online and now have a few hundred spam mail there each day. I think I can live with the GMail spam to "good mail" ratio...
  • Jorge Rosa · 1 year ago
My box seems fine, apart from a few (rare) false positives and (rarer, apart from an REM newsletter) false positives.
The spam-box has reached its height in the XMas of 2005 (more than 1000 spam messages), and from then on the trend has been to slowly decrease the count (except for the holidays), even when I associated the GMail account with an older one.

Maybe there is a hidden variable in the reported increases of spam. POP3 x IMAP (I still use POP3)? Something else?
  • EricIetsugu · 1 year ago
I'm definetely having some spam since this sunday. I thought it was only my gmail...
  • SM · 1 year ago
Time for everyone to move back to yahoo! mail...
  • Joe Engineer · 1 year ago
It has been an issue for a number of months now. I used to receive zero spam and now I get AT LEAST 30-50 per day.
  • Sam G · 1 year ago
Yes, I have been getting more spam. Fortunately, none of it has entered my inbox. The spam in my spam folder though, has increased in the last week.
  • thattalldude · 1 year ago
Just in this last week, I've gone from maybe 6-8 spams a week in the gMail filter, to about 6 a day. So far, I've only had one make it into my inbox, ever, in 3 years of gMail use, so it's still working better than anyone else I use, but is mildly disturbing.
  • Sharon · 1 year ago
I am still 100% spam free... I love my gmail account.
  • Phil · 1 year ago
Yes - it started about two weeks ago. Google has always caught my spam in the past, never a leak, but not now. What gives?
  • yessuz · 1 year ago
I am spam free dude atm.
    BUT:
In one of my blog posts I have noticed one interesting spam types.
    Providing links using google ads:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/yessuz/2262305343/...

    Quite interesting ;)
  • imma · 1 year ago
mine seems fine - low spam level (~3 per month), practically no leaking (90-95% correctly sorted)

ps : volume of spam is more likely related to who has your email address

I over heard someone last night at Ignite! Seattle talking about their gmail spam. Took 3 hours to get through all because he found one from the London Times and was worried there were more.
  • James · 1 year ago
I wonder if this has anything to do with Gmail's new support for the IMAP protocol. Less users using the webmail interface = less users clicking the "Report Spam" button.
  • Ed · 1 year ago
Spam mania. I'm getting 25 a day into my Google domain inbox whereas I was getting 8-10 only a month or so ago. Only one has escaped the spamtrap in the past week, though. Hope it doesn't fall apart like some have reported.

I'm confident that the smart boys and girls at Google can figure this out.
  • shaun · 1 year ago
I am today losing loads of legit email into gmail spam folder - whats going on?
  • gtoal · 1 year ago
I found your page when looking for info on why gmail's spamfilter started leaking spams a few weeks ago - I get about 3 a day, they always arrive around the same time as each other, and they're all the same 'enlargement' spam. I've looked at the mails and I don't see any clever text encoding tricks that would bypass a conventional bayesian filter.

I'll be interested to find out how they're doing this.

I can second a lot of what people are saying! SPAM is such a time waster! So fed up with it!
  • oldarney · 1 year ago
same thing is happening to me. i never got spam in the last month or two ive been recieving spam. including Hi5 bs. i marked an email spam, two days later that same email arrived again on my mail box and it dint get filtered. this is beggining to piss me off. the mail reason i use gmail is because of its anti spam.
  • Ken · 9 months ago
Count me in. I have never had Spam in Gmail--and I've been with them since their inception. Then suddenly a couple weeks ago, I started to notice 2 or 3 a week. Now, it's 1 or 2 a day and getting worse. I made the mistake of having my email address on a company website for bots to grab, but have since taken it off. Even so, Gmail should have caught it. What's happening, G?
  • tastyrerun · 9 months ago
I have had the exact same experience. Formerly, almost no spam, now a LOT of it. I wonder what gives?
  • gary · 8 months ago
I've noticed exactly the same - hence I found your blog when I did a search to see if anyone else had the same problem.
  • gary · 8 months ago

Noticed a massive increase this weekend but it's been increasing all of last week.
  • Konstantin Boyandin · 6 months ago
I should admit that my Gmail accounts started to miss 1-2 spam messages a day, for 2-3 weeks already.

Since this is is an endless war, I am not really disturbed,. Most of spam is delivered to where it belongs.
  • Nicole · 5 months ago
I got one or two that the spam filter didn't catch, but that's happened on occasion before. Mostly it works very well.
  • vvvinzant · 5 months ago
I have been getting thousands of spam every week since I opened my gmail account. Part of the trouble is that they go into my inbox, not to my spam folder. I've had to put a filter to direct this mess to my trash folder, so I can report spam. I was told by google that this was due to my internet practices - but I have no such problem with any other email account I have (3). I think it is due to gmail's spam filter not working. And if it is spam, why do I need to see it at all?
