    MashableAwards

The Awards initiative is excellent, and helps show what's going on and mobilize owners & members of social networks.

    2 points I'd explore improving:

    1. Giving more time for the People's Vote (as Pete mentioned)

    2. Clarifying what criteria are used for the Expert Vote, and letting each candidate 'pitch' against these criteria.

    Overall, terrific initiative.

    Merry Xmas all!

Thanks for hosting the competition and including Twango, Pete! Hopefully we can change your mind about who's hot in our category for 2007. Keep an eye on your inbox! ;-)

  • bunnyhero · 2 years ago
i would also like to chime in and say that more time should have been given for the people's votes. especially for the later categories! i didn't even find out about being nominated until it was too late to put a button on my site or anything. and i think voting was open for less than a day on the widgets category. seems a bit silly.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Bunnyhero,

Voting was open for about 48 hours in the last 2 categories. We actually got complaints that we'd extended it too long, but I agree that beginning the voting earlier in the week would have been preferable. I think BunnyHero rocks, (as Kelvin said in the post he wrote) - it's one of the most popular widgets measured over a t Mashable Labs.

I'm curious what site used their menions to break the rules of voting - 1. I never want to use them even on accident and 2. I think they should be outed for their actions.

    Congrats to all the winners.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    Paul,

It was in this category, yoursportsfan: http://mashable.com/2006/12/20/social-networkin...

They also left some abusive messages (which were removed - kinda wish I'd left them now), but the cheating was the reason for banning the company.

i'm so happy that TWANGO won for the people's choice in photo sharing- because twango rocks!

but i'm really annoyed that the people's choice winner is simply mentioned by way of zoomr- "they lost out narrowly in the voting to the media-sharing site Twango (we also gave that one a fairly positive review this year)."

let's acknowledge the proper winners next time around!

    merry christmas everyone!
  • Jarron · 2 years ago
A good roundup. I would include Guba (http://www.guba.com) on any Video Sharing link. They've been around for eternity, in various renditions.

Did I miss reddit (http://www.reddit.com) in the Social News category? A great success story.

And as for social nets of 2007, I would definitely add Experience Project (http://www.experienceproject.com)-- networking on life experiences.
  • Gabriel Tonelli · 2 years ago
I'd love to see a Social Network dealing with expats worldwide.

    Hi Pete,
Do you know YOONO ? A social search engine based on indexing their users'bookmarks and feeds. Yoono was launched in march 2006. Yoono was awarded recommended add-on by Firefox in July and best start-up at the start-up contest in Le Web 3 last December 12. Yoono counts 250,000 users and its user base is growing 3,000 more a day. Thanks for having the opportunity to mention Yoono here. Pascal, CEO of Yoono.
  • rober hombrea · 2 years ago
http://popurls.com should be added as having started the singlegator trend
  • Yan · 2 years ago
    Pete,
Thanks for having the contest. I have a couple suggestions for improvements. The way the contest was designed it was sort of biased towards people 'with time on their hands'.

The instructions were buried in paragraphs of small type, the comment form was pages and pages of scrolling at the bottom. In the future I would suggest putting the voting area right on top, and not using something like blog comments to do it. There are embeddable voting widgets or you can use someting like wufoo to collect responses. This will ensure that people who come to the site to vote won't have to spend many minutes trying to figure out where and how to do it...because that usually causes people to leave without voting. Thanks!

Voting has to be easy for everyone or the contest will be biased...
  • David · 2 years ago
    Hi Pete,

Thanks for holding this event and for nominating Project Opus. Thanks to everyone who voted for us! We hope to win in in 2007!
  • notice · 2 years ago
Anybody notice how the people involved with these sites seemed to have cared a lot more than actual users?
  • David Hemphill · 2 years ago
I think it's important to mention that Virb.com, brought to you by the same guys that did PureVolume, will soon be released to the mass public. I've had the opportunity to beta test the site and I'm telling you, this setup is likely to be the last social-networking stop you'll ever need. I have several profiles up on the internet and no other has the dead-simple- yet amazingly-powerful interface that Virb does.
  • Dmitri · 2 years ago
David....do you know how many social networks say that? myspace shows interface and features are not what's important. This blog here loves to look at interface + features but ask real people about 99 % of these award sites and most haven't heard of them. nobody will use them even if they are good because its about community and the business. some of these categories have too many hot for 2007. in most there might be lucky to be 1 that does well. and i bet most except the myspace types aren't makign much money.
  • Ron Jones · 2 years ago
Great list . However I would have liked if you had given your own detailed analysis of why people have voted Multiply . Multiply actually do not allow people to socialise in real time with the same community since they asks users to import friend lists from Hotmail and Myspace and other existing networks . This I think is the easier way out rather than building a community from the scratch by spending on marketing budget Piggybacking on other SNA is the easier way out...but not a great thing to do ..since Social networks are still in their infancy
  • ankur · 2 years ago
As a mashable reader, and a yelp user, I think you were spot on!!!

Yelp is a great site, which by most accounts has flown under the radar. Great community, that is really positive and helpful. Also, a site that is just plain damn slick.

    my yelp plug: http://www.ankur.yelp.com

    hehe.
  • Shreela · 2 years ago
I enjoy linkfilter.net because there's more than just internet/tech stuff. Many links are about society, health, some art, and of course a few odd stories. There are some internet/tech links too, but nothing like some of the other big sites.

Perhaps next time you could provide a direct link in addition to a link to your review of the site. It would make it easier to visit the sites (ex: mashable/review).

  • PageBuildr · 2 years ago
A new social networking site, currently under the radar and poised for considerable growth in 2007, is PageBuildr.

PageBuildr lets you build and design your own website. Features friends, messages and many other features found in the best social networking sites. A new site, many more features are being added daily.

Pages are added using Page Types - including blogs, galleries, calendars, playlists, and forums. Users can create profile pages, and can comment on any page on the website. Site-wide content aggregating coming soon!
  • Pierre · 2 years ago
I don't understand why you are quoting vPod.tv ... Their service barely works and there is not even 3000 public videos on their website...
It's a me-too service with a bunch of Ajax scripts... If I wasn't in holiday I would have vote for LiveVideo. Their product is just great. The biggest problem about video sharing videos these days, is that you can't find what you're looking for. And it's what their service is about. Digging up or down videos, pretty simple UI. It's really efficient.

    HEY PETE,

Do you think it is odd that in the 102 comments here...there is not one mention of Flixster? That's one of your winners. They supposedly have 7 million members but there is not a single comment about them.

Something is very shady with their numbers and their alexa page views. It just does not add up. Look at their "who's online now" section. For 7 million user base....how can there be less than 700 people online at any one time? that's .01% of their membership.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
    worminbuffet,

I dunno - there was a decent amount of voting for Flixster, and this post has gotten quite a few comments in the last few days:

    http://mashable.com/2006/11/03/flixster-claims-...

and this one (votes for flixster):

    http://mashable.com/2006/12/22/niche-social-net...

What's more, the voters seem slightly clueless, and all have unique IPs - they're real teens alright (the comments are very similar to those I get about MySpace, Bebo and the rest).

One post that does have a bizarrely low comment count is Zebo - they claimed millions of users, yet the Mashable post (2nd on Google for "Zebo") hasn't received a single comment from their members.

guys you missed the only mobile social network that is live and integrates on a Global scale and is completely drive by (multi media) video, image, and text. It is called Kink Kommunity, it has won a few awards and is soon connecting the US to the existing Australian and UK user base.

It would be a shame to praise mobile products that do not utilise 3G technology and that are only 2G offerings at best. Kink Kommunity is a real mobile social media offering and is enjoyed by 100,00's of members already.

I look forward to see your 2007 analysis. There is a lot of happening in this business. Companies are realizing the importance of social networking and fostering their services. Just take an example of www.zyb.com. Started as a free online phone data backup service but now planning to offer social networking element as well.
The world has not only become a global village in terms of information but also creating relations.
I suggest you to also analyze 2006 with the predictions of 2007. I am sure people would be stunned to see how the world is changing.

A generic social networking site cant make any good progress unless it has something special. Making friends online has becoming a boring topic now-a-day. Lets think about molecular social concept. e.g. Map mashup to display users is a good idea.

Most homeowners realize they will pay about twice the purchase price of their home on a traditional mortgage - a mortgage that will take about 30 years to pay off.

Introducing a way to break that cycle of financial drain—the Money Merge Account. Developed by a team of financial experts with years of experience in the mortgage industry, the MMA rapidly reduces the principal of your mortgage, practically eliminating the interest from accruing on your loan. Your 30-year mortgage can now be paid off in about 8 to 11 years, with no change to your lifestyle or refinancing of your existing mortgage.

The Money Merge Account is not a bi-weekly payment or debt roll-down system. It’s an entirely new approach that gives homeowners flexibility with their money and complete financial freedom.

A side-by-side comparison of a traditional mortgage repayment shows the savings potential using the MMA system. A 30-year, $136,000 mortgage at 5.25%, when paid through conventional monthly payments, will result in a 30-year total repayment of $270,784 – nearly twice the cost of the home. The MMA program can repay the same mortgage in 11.3 years with a total repayment of $181,217. An incredible savings of $89,566 is realized on the same income, with the same mortgage, at the same interest rate, and without any changes to your standard of living. MMA is simply one of the fastest ways to repay a mortgage and be on your way to financial freedom.

IconDrive.com (http://www.icondrive.com)is a social online destination navigation network for people who want to share their destination links via a GPS-style navigation screen.

You add your favorite sites, search engines, and links to any kind of online content (like MP3 files, video files, etc.) and your friends get a "ride" with you to your online destinations. And when you add new destinations to a category, you and your friends receive an automatic e-mail listing the destinations for that destination.

It has a dashboard, a "keyword" compartment, a mirror (showing you online destinations you've been to and keywords you used or stored), an MP3 player, and more.

Great list . However I would have liked if you had given your own detailed analysis of why people have voted Multiply . Multiply actually do not allow people to socialise in real time with the same community since they asks users to import friend lists from Hotmail and Myspace and other existing networks

While social networking is great for ordinary traffic, I don't find it to monitize very well - but the links are still nice, and can help with the organic traffic coming from the search engines that *do* provide customers...
