Why is it that even though my search settings are completely private, as are all my other account settings including my profile picture, both my former and present profile pictures are available via google images? I find this absolutely infuriating and will be deleting my facebook account.

It all comes down to the use. People who want fb to remain a private commuication tool for friends can still have it this way. And those who would like to have fb be a platform for attracting attention and business can have it this way.

The more important question is can fb still be relevant? My experience with myspace has been frustrating. As soon as i sign up i become hounded by profiles of women - who would love to be my friend and hang out in various paid dating websites.

Do you think there is a chance that if fb becomes searchable then business interest may take over?

Why just sharing the name and last name?
I think they should extend it by adding important profile information such as : gender , looking for etc.

Evorgleb , If you don't want to appear in the search results you don't have to - it is up to you.

This is precisely why I no longer user someone elses discussion forum or social network....as a user has no control over what ultimately happens to any of the information that is posted.

Blake tries to minimalize the impace of this decision, but it is a slippery slope and I would bet that this is simply the first step in Facebook's release of more information to the public indexes.

Be careful, as information is like profit in a public corporation, the controller of that information always want more.

The bottom line is that users could learn in the future that inormation they did not want public finds its way on public index caches pages that will never be removed or modified.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. I guess I'll have to wait and see how it plays out. I use my Facebook page for more private dealings with my friends (I have like 60 Facebook friend compared to my 630 Myspace friends). I'm not sure i want to start getting a bunch of Facebook friend request from people who just know me from my blog and do not know me personally

A lot of users will be caught off-guard when the change happens and there will be some pissed people when the picture of them drunk at a party is the first thing employers see when googling their name.

I think this is a valuable tool for those who want to be searched for business connections and networking. If you don't want someone seeing your drunken night at the bar, don't post it on Facebook, I think that's pretty common sense. Besides, Myspace has been search able for years and no one complains. Good move Facebook!

I think it's crucial that Facebook make its users aware that it's just the listings that will show up in search results, not profiles. Or else we could see some very confused, angry Facebookers.

Right now they show the Profile pic and name, I hope they keep it that way. If anyone wants to know about an individual, only the friend should know. And another thing why I should sign a form, Facebook should make it default as far as privacy is concerned.

I actually think that's good news ... I use FB to make new business connections not to have private conversations. Internet has always been a sneaky medium when it comes to privacy and I do not see that changing in the near future, actually with web 3.0 things might even get worse.. Google is like a big brother, they know more about you, then you know about them ... so only share what you want to share.

Some of us would like to make our entire profile public. It's a shame that's not an option. But then that would disrupt FB's business model by punching holes in the login wall.

Hi Pete,

Just to reiterate, public searching listings only contain a name and a tiny version of the profile picture. They are not profiles, so the headline might be a bit misleading. It's also important to remember that (by default) this information is already available to people who register for a Facebook account even if those users are not your friends.

As with Facebook in general, the goal here is to make it easier for friends to find and connect with each other. That person you took to prom 30 years ago might not think to look for you on Facebook, so this opens a new avenue for friend connections without exposing any new information about you.
