(Here's a blast from the pass - an article I wrote about the early experiments of online giving - http://www.bethkanter.org/a...

Anyway, integrated offline/online strategies have been part of the nonprofit/activist's tool kits almost since the beginning - so it makes a lot of sense to combine offline/online with social media. After all, as the old fundraising saw goes - people give to people .....

Re: Drive Money to Your Cause With Social Media

Jason -- check out Kimbia's functionality at www.kimbia.com. In order for individuals to begin more effectively leveraging their online personal networks for fundraising, organizations who champion a variety of important causes also need to begin putting the best online fundraising tools in their supporters hands. Here's how KIMBIA is enabling that:
http://www.kimbia.com/news-...

Re: Drive Money to Your Cause With Social Media

This is why standards and APIs are important, because getting each of the websites to talk to each other can be a bit difficult.

One broadly accepted format is the standard RSS or ATOM news feed.

It's possible, for example, to generate a news feed from a main blog. That feed can then be subscribed to in Facebook, Friendfeed, other blogs, MySpace (i think) and more. When a new article is published to the source blog, it will be syndicated across all the subscribed platforms.

Unfortunately not enough services provide, and accept, standard formats for other types of structured data, like calenders. Facebook offers an iCal export, but I haven't tried directly reusing it. Google Calendar however does a great job of offering up an event feed in multiple formats that can reused with standards-compliant websites.

APIs can also accomplish this task, however it requires a programmer somewhere to build to the piece of code that will link the platforms. Still, it's better than being completely impossible ;)

Keep an eye on the websites you use most, and if some are able to produce or accept standard formats, those are the ones to use, because they will be able to accomplish the cross-site integration that you (and all of us) seek.

Re: Drive Money to Your Cause With Social Media

Hey: On Thursday, November 27, 2008, Celebrities For Charity (CFC) will raffle off a Super Bowl XXXVI ring donated to CFC by Je’ Rod Cherry.
