Hey Leslie - nice post! We actually launched Train for Humanity, a new non profit humanitarian org, a couple of weeks ago via Twitter. Chris Brogan was kind enough to get the tweets rolling.

Our mission - training (getting in shape) + social media + blogging = social good

Attempting to raise $50,000 to help Darfur Peace & Development rebuild the Shegegkaro school, which was recently bombed...

Very timely! I just sent out a fundraising email via Facebook for the National MS Society’s New York City Chapter 24th annual Bike MS event. Please visit www.bikeMSnyc.org to donate online.

It would be nice if there was an app that sent out notfications to every social network someone is a part of. E.G., I want to mobilize my friends on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Digg, my blog, wherever with a single post. Ideally, the notification would include a widget so someone could donate right there. Just a thought.

This is why standards and APIs are important, because getting each of the websites to talk to each other can be a bit difficult.

One broadly accepted format is the standard RSS or ATOM news feed.

It's possible, for example, to generate a news feed from a main blog. That feed can then be subscribed to in Facebook, Friendfeed, other blogs, MySpace (i think) and more. When a new article is published to the source blog, it will be syndicated across all the subscribed platforms.

Unfortunately not enough services provide, and accept, standard formats for other types of structured data, like calenders. Facebook offers an iCal export, but I haven't tried directly reusing it. Google Calendar however does a great job of offering up an event feed in multiple formats that can reused with standards-compliant websites.

APIs can also accomplish this task, however it requires a programmer somewhere to build to the piece of code that will link the platforms. Still, it's better than being completely impossible ;)

Keep an eye on the websites you use most, and if some are able to produce or accept standard formats, those are the ones to use, because they will be able to accomplish the cross-site integration that you (and all of us) seek.

Jason -- check out Kimbia's functionality at www.kimbia.com. Addresses some of your point here re: the ability to enable people to give immediately, no matter where they are online.

Leslie, nice post on an extremely relevant topic. In order for individuals to begin more effectively leveraging their online personal networks for fundraising, organizations who champion a variety of important causes also need to begin putting the best online fundraising tools in their supporters hands. Here's how KIMBIA is enabling that:

Is it true that Kimbia is taking the lead in crazy on line attacks on Barack Obama's character? Their name is all over web sites that are nothing I would want to be associated with that are spreading nasty rumors about him. I don't care if its free I don't want my school name next to that bs.

    Hi Leslie,

    Thanks for the ping!

Online fundraising is still a relatively young field - having really got started in the mid-1990s when credit card transactions became available. (Here's a blast from the pass - an article I wrote about the early experiments of online giving - http://www.bethkanter.org/artswire/cyberfundrai...)

Anyway, integrated offline/online strategies have been part of the nonprofit/activist's tool kits almost since the beginning - so it makes a lot of sense to combine offline/online with social media. After all, as the old fundraising saw goes - people give to people .....
