So do we think it'll eat up less bandwidth than Skype?
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
But is it encrypted like Skype is?

With the recent slip up form Google Chrome's ULA I think it would be a good idea to thoroughly go through the ULA before even considering this as an alternative to Skype.

Pretty phenomenal...it would be even more impressive if they could do it without a download (which I assume is required to make it P2P)
  • Steven · 1 year ago
Agreed, they are able to do P2P with the Flash10 player.

My girlfriend and I recently switched from Skype to Sightspeed because of the overall video quality of Sightspeed, it'll be interesting to give this a shot.
  • Alex · 1 year ago
Yes, encryption is a very important issue. But not the only one. Some reasons why I don't use Skype though it is fully encrypted: http://www.secdev.org/conf/skype_BHEU06.handout....

Basically, the problem with Skype and GMail Video Chat is: The protocols are not open.
  • yehoni · 1 year ago
I don't know about Skype, but in gmail, the protocols actually *are* open. From the gmail blog announcement:

"And in the spirit of open communications, we designed this feature using Internet standards such as XMPP, RTP, and H.264, which means that third-party applications and networks can choose to interoperate with Gmail voice and video chat."
  • Justin Uberti · 1 year ago
Gmail video chat uses open protocols. It is based on XMPP, RTP, and H.264.

I was very exited to see this, but it turns out that yet again they are giving Linux users the cold shoulder. I will be exited once again once they finally get around to releasing for Linux.

Great stuff here, Gmail keeps getting better and better. What I would like to see is the ability to record a video and send it to somebody.. a video message kind of thing. At least with other gmail users, there is plenty of space for them to receive the video.

Is this yet another "killer" of Google? Like Knol was supposed to kill Wikipedia? And Google Checkout was supposed to kill Paypal?
  • Stephanie · 1 year ago
The video quality is seamless! I am loving it! I just hope more people add it. Also, do you know of any IM gadget type of thing that will allow me to also use the video feature through my different IMs but compiles all lists into one. Like Adium or Digsby but also shows video? That would be amazing!

thanks for showing me this! xo

This is very excited tool for gmail users.Gmail users can discuss live via this video too. Thanks for googlers.

Meh... Ebay isn't doing much with Skype anyway. Google just needs people to use it. I would also bet there are about a billion people who have never heard of Skype but already have at least one Google account. Maybe there will be a "rising tide" effect on Skype.

VZOChat is more better. Linux client on the way)) Woking on wine in Mac perfect now with cameras
  • finferflu · 1 year ago
I will be very interested to see this extension available for Linux. Only then this will be an alternative to Skype for me.

seems pretty slick to me.. had a hiccup getting it started on Mac OS X 10.4 Server that I have but got it working by choosing the customization feature during install and only choosing one of them... unfortunately I can't remember which one it was :-( but all is working and it is rather fast. might even be quicker video than iChat
  • Keith Bloemendaal · 1 year ago
Great! I am downloading it now. I use skype video for family and have been chatting on GTalk for business for some time, maybe can do video chat instead ( I am still only about 40wpm typer!)

    Thanks for the tip!

Hi!!! seems to be nice... but please do it for linux!!!
  • Arsen Yeremin · 11 months ago
Skype still offers better quality. Especially when voiping with Europe. Plus you cant do this:
    javascript:void(location='skype:-'+escape(document.selection?document.selection.createRange().text:(window.getSelection?window.getSelection():(document.getSelection?document.getSelection:''))).replace(/[^\d]+/g, ''))

To call a land line all I have to do is select the phone number and hit a bookmark with this URL. Works in Chrome have not tested in other browsers, but should work.

I've found its just as good as Skype and it creates one less thing to have open on my desktop. I'd love to see Google allow us to record our chat sessions and store them within our user quota.

Does video chat work with Turkey & UK? Can't find it any where about. I was using Skype.

Tested video chat feature with two users on home network. The Skype video chat is way clearer and so is the audio. I love my gmail e-mail, Chrome Browser, but Skype does a much better job.

my daughter just moved to Dublin, Ireland. We set up Gmail video chat here (in U.S.) on our computers and it worked fine. But now that she is over there, it doesn't work. Can somebody help me?
